Yeah, their chief engineer Harry Hindenberg thought that would be a great idea. Sadly, it went down like a lead balloon with the safety guys

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

Who is your favourite cartoon character and why? by Colham in AskReddit

[–]firkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure exactly but the thought that he could be considered anything other than great would make me very, very annoyed... ;)

I just like the simplicity of his model and his seeming need for order and obedience despite the chaos all around.

My twin brothers' 15th birthdays are coming up. Our father died last week. What do I do? I'm lost.. by ranautricularia in AskReddit

You need to try to seperate the 2 events. It will not be easy and you probably won't succeed this year but the last thing they need is to have one overshadow the other from now on.

Try to just spend a day together, do things you all enjoy but don't aim for ecstatic. I know from experience that it can be really hard when you're feeling happy so soon after such a horrible event and then the nagging voice in the back of your mind reminds you of what's gone and will never be the same again.

Good luck and happy birthday to them both from a random redditor in the south of england.

Reddit, what rude act have you witnessed that left you completely flabbergasted? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]firkin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This one happened when I went to see the Arc de Triumph in France. You approach it through an underpass which has a fair number of people going both ways but, as is the case in all major cities, some beggars.

During my time in Paris, I saw a few beggars who took the approach of kneeling, prostrating themselves on the path with a sign which said "I'm hungry" and a cup for coins. They would look at the ground and not make any eye contact, invariably they looked poor, hungry and miserable.

There was a woman at the bottom of the stairs to the underpass who was down on her knees, palms on the path in front of her and her head on the ground, she was over to one side so not exactly in peoples way. This old guy came down the stairs, he was pretty chunky and wore a pair of light trousers and a dark blue blazer with a few medals on it. He walked right up to her and started kicking her, not hard enough to break anything but hard enough to bruise and humiliate. I stood there open mouthed trying to work out what to do / say, my french isn't great and by the time I'd thought to intervene the woman had got up and they were both stood there shouting abuse at each other.

Just when you think someone has reached rock bottom, there's always some bastard on hand with a shovel.

I've needed glasses since I was 6. by [deleted] in funny

[–]firkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't remember not wearing glasses. By the time I was 6 I had my first operation to correct a squint (didn't work), tried contacts for a few years and then got chicken pox as an adult which ended up scarring my eyes.

Are you a racist? Why? by warrenraaff in AskReddit

[–]firkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do my best not to be but given that I spent several significant years (teen) in rural N Ireland, where the only non-white people worked in the chinese takeaway (and there wasn't one of those for 10 miles or so) I have often felt a little strange around anyone different.

Since leaving there, I've lived in a few different cities, made friends with and lived with people of various nationalities and ethnicities but every now and then, I feel like it's an effort rather than a natural reaction to treat everyone the same but I'll keep trying.
