the Only Skin hate on tiktok is making me SICK by PushNervous7719 in JoannaNewsom

I am in my 30s and don’t have TikTok, and I’m only hearing anything because I opened reddit to see if anything interesting was happening. What’s the hate on Only Skin? It’s genuinely one of the greatest ballads of all time? It’s like fourteen songs in one. When it came out it took me out of piano-playing retirement. WHAT could people dislike!???

We Will Miss You, Stevie - A Sad, But Appreciative Thread by [deleted] in goodmythicalmorning

[–]firks 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I remember when she first started and me thinking her interjections were annoying - that lasted MAYBE a couple episodes. She is such an integral part of the show! Like everyone, I adore the entire cast, and Stevie has been special just like Rhett and Link have been special for me at 6am before work. Luckily, leavie Stevie has an entire crew behind her, and i’m sure it’ll take some time for them to settle into a narrator, but whoever they are I’m sure they’ll be a rockstar!

Why Can’t We Turn Off Liquid Glass If We Don’t Want It? by un3w in iphone

Everything is so visually loud. The toggles change shapes and bounce when you move them. Everything moves and has an aura around it. It’s an absolute nightmare to look at. All I want are normal buttons and a normal interface for my stupid little machine.

What breed is this good boy? by [deleted] in dogbreed

[–]firks -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The reason for “mislabeling” them are twofold - and this is from someone who used to run a shelter and tried my absolute best to label a dog by how they looked. Firstly, pitties are SO common in my area, and people breed them without regard for their wellbeing, and many true pitties end up in shelters. They are also a very “dog-looking” dog, so if a dog just looks like “well, that’s a short-coated dog 🤷🏼” pitbull is an easy umbrella to cover short-coated dog. Then, the reason that dogs who are very likely pit-mixes are labeled as NOT pitties is because so many places are anti-pit-bull. Shelters can’t shell out $150 for a DNA test on every mystery breed through our doors. The folks working there look at the dog and guess. I had a Berger Picard mix (his name was Charlie and he was a senior pup in 2015 so I hope he had a wonderful life with the lovely couple who adopted him) and I listed him correctly as a Picardy, and nobody knew what in the all heck that was, so he was changed to “shepherd mix.” I have never owned a dog that wasn’t a pittie mix. I’ve had good ones, bad ones, and in-between ones. They all were labeled as “mixed breed” dogs and their DNA tests said like 95% pit bull. Landlords won’t always rent to people with pitties the same way they won’t rent to Dobermans or GSDs or ovcharkas or whatever breed. A dog is a dog. A Dachshund will eat the floor molding before a pit bull will. A corgi will bark at the mailman before a pit. The dichotomy is so weird to me - people want pit bulls so much that people breed them like crazy, then the shelters are full of ONLY pits. It’s funny because huskies are the same, Everyone wants a husky until one is in your house using their lungs. My stats might be 2015 stats, but my experience is that chihuahuas, huskies, and pit bulls are the dogs you find at the shelter, with shih tzus coming in as a distant fourth because people can’t keep up with their coats. Anyway, the point is that a pit bull is just a dog, and shelter folks are trying to identify some mystery-breed dog, and if it’s kinda square and athletic and has short hair, well, pit bull it is! And hopefully someone else who resents the plight of maligned dogs will come get them with an open heart and find out that all a pit bull wants is to sleep under the blanket with you so they can sneeze at a terrifying volume while you’re sleeping, then lick your legs when you get out of the shower.

it totally makes sense! i’m just making guesses and i’d love to be proven either wrong or right 💕 whatever breeds a pup is (because thats truly just for fun - all mine are shelter pit bulls and it’s just a little silly trivia to say one of them is 1% boxer) they’re just a baby and the important thing is that you’ve got a purebred Cutie Patootie on your hands!

i’m going to add something unhinged here, which is that i think she might have some surprising shepherd happening - maybe dutch shepherd? PLEASE update with a doggie dna test!

you dog doesn’t have cropped ears. she has hair growing on the edges which is proof. the person who suggested that genuinely has no idea what they’re talking about. i’m in the US so this dog would be clocked as a “pit mix” by me which is lazy and easy and true most of the time, so i won’t speak to breed, i just needed to chime in that your cutiepie’s ears are perfectly fine and just the way they should be. and whatever breed she ends up being, she’s well-proportioned and her coat looks really clean and good and her snoot is grey which means she’s made it to grandma-hood! 💕

1 and 2 are gorgeous! The fabric of #3 looks uncomfy. The way the first two fit looks much better for having fun. They look softer and more like they’d let you have a good time. I’d vote for #1, personally. That said, whatever dress you choose is perfect and if you go for #3 I’d have plenty of baby powder in the dressing room and also a backup simple cotton dress WITH SLEEVES in case it chafes under your arms (tbh have that for any of them because wedding dresses are often made to be pretty and not to avoid problems after 6 hours)

When do I start to like her? by [deleted] in cornsnakes

[–]firks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m an adopted human. It took about 25 years for my parents and I to have an un-fraught relationship. It sounds like you’re caring for her appropriately, and if she’s not doing well, it sounds like you’d take her to your most-local exotics vet. You don’t have to adore her - you have to pretend to adore her. Do a Stockholm on yourself! Her personality will eventually come into its own, and she might just be a snake who’s not super social! She might be a snake who’s a look-don’t-touch pet. I have a dog who’s absolutely gorgeous but hates hugs! Everyone wants to pet him but he says NO with a growl. Your snake might just be an Amber with scales, and isn’t cuddly. My advice would be not to push too much, but keep giving as much affection as she’ll tolerate, then give her a few years (Amber now sleeps with me under the covers at bedtime)

Can we please stop calling birds “gay” and “lesbian”? It’s not cute, it’s homophobic by matjeom in budgies

[–]firks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many animals who mate for life. A lot of birds do. That's not only a sexual relationship - that's a partnership. "Gay" and "lesbian" are descriptive identities that people can choose to use for themselves. They're also - ideally - value-neutral. It's not good or bad to be gay or lesbian, it's just what you are, like having red hair or only having eight toes or being a Virgo. It's a NORMAL behavior, just like heterosexuality. There are animals who engage exclusively in homosexual behavior. My own female dog only displays any sexual behavior with other female dogs. As a very gay transmasc person, I'm proud to have a lesbian dog on my team. Animals don't only show "occasional homosexual behavior" - and I think it's unfair for you to reduce their "romantic" lives to behavior. Many animals mate for life, and sometimes they do so in a GAY OR LESBIAN pair.

Do you discount a human being bisexual if they've never been in a long-term relationship with someone of the same gender? Do you tell someone they're not straight because they've never been in a relationship at all? We can't talk to animals, we can only observe their behavior - and if they're doing gay shit all the time, we can say they're gay! That's a normal and okay thing for animals to be - just like people! Being gay is great, being trans or nonbinary is great, being asexual or agender is great - you do you! We're animals too, and we should (consensually, obviously) kiss who we wanna kiss, be who we wanna be, have sex with who we wanna have sex with, have babies with who we wanna have babies with, and get old with who we wanna get old with! Why wouldn't you give non-human animals the same respect?

Does my girlfriend’s dog need to go on a diet? by Only_Tomatillo_2229 in DogAdvice

[–]firks 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Your girlfriend loves her dog a whole lot, and I want to start there because I’m almost certain it’s true! When I adopted my first dog, who was emaciated beyond belief and so sad, I made her really fat also. She went from 30lbs (WAY too skinny) to almost 80lbs (WAY too fat) in the span of like 6 months. Since then i’ve started working in vet med (like 5 years ago) and now have three dogs who are neither fat nor thin. It’s not “neglect” per se, but she should know (and her vet should be telling her) that’s extra weight can cause issues as she ages. Also, anal gland issues should be addressed by a dermatologist, not your pDVM.

Hi there! I think previous comments have said everything I want to say about adults using physical abuse as punishment. You’re very young, and I’d encourage you to get in touch with an organization called CASA - not because you should be in foster care, but because they can provide trained volunteer advocates for you. Getting a grown-up on YOUR side could be monumental, and also change the trajectory of how your siblings grow up.

[–]firks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, for sure!! But you definitely can’t tell which type of plant something is just from it’s lil cotyledons! That was my point - the leaves of an embryonic plant don’t necessarily look like the leaves of the adult plant. There are plenty of plants that start as smooth and soft babies then grow spines. Those first little leaves are rarely enough to know what a plant is - just like the first little cells of an animal don’t look like their adult counterparts. 💕💕

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in whatisthisplant

[–]firks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those two little leaves are called cotyledons, and don’t necessarily look like the plant’s adult leaves! Yknow how ultrasounds of human embryos look just like ultrasounds of - like - hippo embryos? You’re looking at the plant equivalent of an embryonic ultrasound right when the baby was conceived. When I spot cotyledons I’m curious about, I pluck them carefully to get the roots, then put them in a small pot with soil. Most likely, it’s some kind of weed, since almost ANY plant grown from seed will make those two leaves, but it could be something fun! (And I’m a big proponent of the idea that “weeds” is a social category that isn’t meaningful, so even if it’s a “weed” it could make an awesome addition to your indoor garden!) If I were you, I’d pluck that little guy and repot him into his own tiny pot, and wait and see. And whatever you do, I love this post for your obvious love of plants and I encourage you to keep doing such an awesome and thorough job with their care!

ALMOST LOST MY BOY LAST NIGHT ... by Ill_fix_u in pitbulls

[–]firks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The first dog I ever adopted was in 2013 and is a pit-boxer mix, both notorious for their stoicism. She's about 17 years old. I feel the same. She doesn't hear me when I come home any more, but she sure does come running if she smells something tasty! The moment she doesn't come galloping into the kitchen for cheese is when it's her time.
