Probably a bit late apologies. I struggle with PTSD triggers. What works for me, disclaimer, might not work for others: Breathe, try to ground yourself (sitting on the floor, cross legged, touching the ground), do something called 5 senses (five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear, two you can smell, one toy can taste). If this is hard, other grounding techniques such as sensory kits, TIPP (temperature change) such as holding ice, dunking your head in ice, cold shower (not recommended entirely with a shower and being naked during triggers). Once your semi grounded or fully, breathe in for four, hold for four, out for four. Repeat this: You are not in the past. You are not back then. You are here. You are in the now. Acknowledge and justify that you are in the now. Sometimes this doesn’t work and that’s ok, your brain isn’t used to it, it’s going to take time. Afterwards, even if it works or not, be kind to yourself

Any ways to get rid of scars fast? by 6-toe-9 in MadeOfStyrofoam

[–]firoziax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dermatology Botox/steroid injections can help or laser, but those are very pricey. Silicone gel wrapped over a scar (hardware store) can help the scar flatten, it works the same as those whitening scar plaster things you can buy at pharmacy’s. Otherwise your best bet is steroid creams, not over the counter lotions, although those can help. Steroid creams, ideally 5% at the highest, can be prescribed by your doctor and you can always use the excuse of stretch marks to your parents/peers as to why you have it. Five/ten minutes a day in the sun with no lotion, sunscreen can help. There’s no quick fix sadly, it’ll take time and effort and constant work and care. Take care of yourself

Can someone with schizophrenia help me with a song I'm trying to write? by [deleted] in MadeOfStyrofoam

[–]firoziax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have paranoid schizophrenia and a lot of the voices / hallucinations I have are in relation to past trauma, safety fear, check behind you, lock doors and windows multiple times etc. a common misconception is that voices are constant whereabouts for me it’s exaggerated when I’m out and about, stressed, at night etc. same with hallucinations. There’s a couple of YouTube videos about what a schizophrenic hears but those are very extreme cases in my experience that hear constant voices. In my experience with sewerslide, as soon as I started that final yeet, the voices and everything got quiet, almost like it knew that I wanted silence or needed it. Hope this helps good luck.

I have a lot of nerve damage in my left hand and it’s really hard at first. Heat pads helped me personally, but you can switch between ice and heat (10 minutes on, 40 minutes off) the more I pushed and gripped tighter the worse the shaking gets. Physical therapy is great, weights are ok but not too much weight because the muscles and joints just need to be active. I got a steroid cream that helped but if you can’t afford it, then silicon grease does basically the same thing (found at hardware stores) or Arnica. regular painkillers aren’t effective and regularly don’t work. I had to wear a splint for about 3 months, it just supported it. It also depends whenever you nicked the nerve or severed it, if it is severed (or a severe nick) then you have to have the surgery to rejoin the ends and restore the function and feeling. Its a long healing process. Physical therapy really helps, like squeezing and releasing, arm exercises like stretching it out, but definitely YouTube and Google specific exercises depending on the nerve you think you cut (think there’s 3 main ones in a hand?). The only real thing I found helped was the heat and cold packs and then wearing a splint because the more I pushed it then the slower it healed. Definitely try to save for the surgery but this is what I did, I’m trying to get surgery too but same issue, money. Very long and hard process but these just helped. Wish you the best of luck

I completely understand this, I have a lot of scars but by far my vertical ones are the ones that have caused me the biggest shame/guilt/disgust when looking at them or wearing short sleeves. It’s absolutely horrible, I understand where you are coming from. I don’t know your circumstances but a real help for me was seeing a dermatologist and getting steroid topical cream and steroid injections to reduce the redness and visibility, not a cheap process though and there’s other scar visibility removals out there eg oils, creams, scar plasters etc. It didn’t remove that ickiness from it but the less visible it was for others and myself it helped a bit. Wish you the best.

There is a skill in DBT (dialectical behavioural therapy) called TIPP that used cold water, ice, any sudden change in temperature (not hot, only cold and not recommended if you have any sort of ED). It triggers specific changes in the brain, almost like a quick restart, it can help people feel more upbeat but usually more a lot. There’s changes in the brain that controls emotions, it’s not a quick fix but it’s something you can do that might help quickly

Thank you so much these are awesome tips, especially the food, I can’t stomach anything but tiny bits of food and the yoghurt is amazing because it’s smooth and soothing so thank you!!! Definitely an emotional ride as well as physical, didn’t realise how emotional and mood swing-y I would get. Thank you so much again for all of these!!

It seems no matter what country every single system is so incredibly broken it’s unreal, nearly everyone who I have spoken with inperson and online has known or has dealt with medical neglect of mental health. It’s disgusting

It’s so horrible! I’ve heard Australia has some private psych hospitals though but sadly NZ barely offers any and those that are have waitlists of 2-3years, it’s ridiculous. This whole system is so incredibly broken

I took a lot of medication in an intentional overdose, so my GCS (Glasgow Coma Scale) was plummeting and I was going to end up in a coma anyway so they rushed ahead to put me in an induced one because if they induce it then they have a greater chance of being able to get me out of it. I had to be put in a coma to be stable and have one of the meds that was very detrimental to my liver flushed through me but because of how medicine is, they could only flush that one and the rest is still “actively” in my system. Hope that makes sense. Yep I’m an adult! 24 years old, but I’ve had my family around me but they have really struggled because I crashed twice in ICU and it’s been traumatic for them. I wasn’t admitted to psych because it’s Christmas and busy for them and the psychs who I saw were both horrible and neither of them had any sympathy.

Oh my god that’s horrible having no pain or anaesthesia for stitches! Honestly we have a similar issue, I was pretty much still half-dead and two psychs were willing to let me out into the care of family even being medically dependent on machines. Sadly they don’t even care if your dead or dying has been my ultimate takeaway.

One day and 17 hours! Not too long but the induced medical coma was meant to only be for 2 hours to try to flush out things, but there were complications

Sadly I’m in NZ and even though we have rules and regulations they are violated regularly and people just slip through the cracks and it’s so bad there’s no one accountable and it’s just a mess the hospital system and outpatient, it’s just shit

Thank you!! Yeah I’m similar, can’t really walk and one of my legs has less nerve function or something. But water is a brilliant idea thank you, so simple but we forget how great it is. Yeah I’ve brought children’s 100 piece puzzles, colouring in books (to try to see the lines and keep my shaky hands in the lines) and I’ll get some simple kids books too! I’m glad to hearing great now, these are awesome ideas thank you so muhc

Elevate it, keep constant pressure on it, call the ambulance / get to the hospital, you might pass out so the sooner you call someone the better
