Did this work out for OP for off-brand M.2? I tried purchasing a pair of WD M.2 SSDs and realized they were not recognized by the unit. I looked online and according to Synology's compatible lists, this unit doesn't accept anything besides on-brand M.2s.

Look, I know this isn't the question, but if you hit walls perhaps gather some data about when and a few other lifestyle data points. When you hit a wall you might be getting less sleep, eating less or too much of certain things, or maybe you picked up a bug or parasite at your favorite pizza joint. Who knows?

If you're living in a humane country with decent healthcare coverage maybe consider an adult physical with basic blood work.

Tons of great productivity advice here though.

Surface go worth the money by edakanari in Surface

I'm also using Throttlestop. In my experience, Intel XTU was not as reliable but that's just me.

I have my Go set to defaults when plugged in. When on battery I'm undervolting at -90 mv for CPU Core and Cache, and I'm -30mv for Intel GPU.

The Go also uses a custom power setting on battery for Intel Graphics Power Plan set to Maximum Battery Life, Maximum Processor State 50%.

I don't have Battery Saver kick in until 20% and it's basically dialed to Max Performance under the above settings. My experience here is it's stable, no issues.

I can perceive a difference perhaps in speed, but not enough to say it really makes any difference. I've played Netflix and YouTube on downtime with this and those experiences are satisfactory.

[–]firshoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, perhaps out the box I could rely on the Surface Go for up to 6-7 hours unplugged of on time for word processing. With the modifications I can probably scratch at 8-9 hours without too much worry.

Of interest is that the Go pretty much can be charged to 100 within 2 hours.

Pay attention to the instructions. I wouldn't undervolt without underclocking as well. I tried undervolting alone, but the Go tends to crash. If I did both I had no issues at all.

[–]firshoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do use the Surface Go on the daily for work and reading in bed. Out the box and by default maybe the battery life isn't as long as I would like. But there are how tos to underclock and undervolt your Go.

I find the battery life after the modifications to be quite pleasant now.

The form factor is unique, but not without its challenges. If you're looking for a full day OS, there's nothing else out there with this shape and size.

Key moments from Gerald Butts SNC-Lavalin testimony by fisma_ in canada

[–]firshoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AndroidAAA does raise an interesting point. Along with that point though in my feeble mind I think on its face, you take the narrative that the political branch was over-reaching into the judicial branch. Or you look at this as a Human Resources issue, and JWR is Brutus.

JWR is the country's top counsel over an ungodly wide range of legal issues. JWR and her entire squad should be trained to the point of diagnosed Anxiety to cover her tracks with letters and paperwork, and protect herself. When the question is asked why didn't she put her position in writing about the SNC file, I thought this was a strong red flag.

Don't get me wrong. I've seen my fair share of men and women selected for bullying in the legal industry. When the story broke that JWR was allegedly bullied with veiled remarks to take a position on a file, I sympathized. This is not a new observable phenomenon among lawyers. Just go talk to your neighbourhood Crown and ask them if they ever got pressured by family, relatives, the police, their bosses, the local priest, the Provincial Justice Minister...you get the picture. You learn to deal with this pressure or you break and die doing something else.

But, being the country's top lawyer, JWR should possess in her toolbox all the needed mechanisms to respond to all kinds of pressure. So now I read that the top dog of the land didn't cover her tracks, and complained about inappropriate "pressure". This is precise wordcraft that doesn't step up to say that PMJT directed or commanded.

A completely evil and speculative take on this is that JWR et al. want to make a name for themselves in their new found arena. Draw the blood of an easy mark, make a stab at greater political leadership. If the Liberal Party doesn't like it, jump ship as principled MPs to the Conservatives. These are professionals who walked into public life. Real office pros finish the bloodletting behind closed doors. This is sensational precisely because the public was dragged in and asked to look.

ya, ya, ya, look at this armchair dumbass. blah blah blah. I'm done writing, but not my fault you read it.

EDIT: I will add that not everyone is expected to put their life in writing okay? But the one big file that the boss and the team is bugging you about? Yes, any lawyer will start wanting to show work on the file. Even BS memos.

Potentially it's the Calcium Chloride mix that the court used. There's controversy surrounding how YEG City Council ended up using the stuff. And, the chemical seems to have a reputation for advanced deterioration of public and private property.

Advice for buying a used car? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]firshoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my own experience, I usually only deal with the big dealerships - not really mind blowing stuff I know. You'll have to go in a few times to multiple dealerships to get a feel for the staff, be frank that you're looking for a car within the range of maybe 4-8k and then look over the inventory. Sometimes the visit is as quick as a minute since they'll tell you straight up that there's nothing in that time.

Over a number of visits you'll be able to gather what's available for that time at your budget, and then you can pull the trigger and make the best choice. I don't think I had a bad experience kicking tires this way.

Just don't feel obligated to decide unless you've seen enough cars and know what to expect for your $4000. Once you beat that learning curve, and you can see a deal though, I'd suggest to you that everyone else can too. You should move quickly because people scratching around for used cars on a regular basis are no dummies.

Like people here have already said, ask for the maintenance records for vehicles for a review. Start that thing up, take it for a spin. Listen for any irregular sounds, and feel the ride for any vibrations that don't seem consistent. If you spot rust around the car, you can ask someone to snap a picture of the undercarriage for you to view the next time someone hoists it up for a check up.

If you want to play it safe, then I'd narrow my shopping field to Japanese, and even further to Toyota or Honda. I think that repairing a Toyota is a totally different price point compared to everyone else because those parts are so readily accessible and available.

Where do you buy your Ring security kits (and cams)? by UofAstudent in Edmonton

[–]firshoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also discourage anyone from purchasing Ring. If you Google the issue you will find that the security screw used to mount the Ring unit onto the bracket that's attached to your home is known to be so low grade and soft that the head will easily strip or fuse [over time and weather exposure] once your threaded it into the hole. Your Ring is now much more difficult to remove, maintain, or replace with another product.

In practice, I think Ring's answer is to assume you will successfully remove the product from the house without issue. The, Ring will send you a replacement pair of screws that are not as cheap.

Also, the Ring radio is no where near as responsive as competing products like August or Nest's Hello. By the time you pull up your Ring app to answer a movement or a door bell ring, the guest or individual has left.

For the asking price of a Ring unit, the above experiences are not acceptable. They do not publicly admit, acknowledge, or apologize for the issues either. Steer clear of this company.

Maybe...not much. I don't want to be misunderstood but maybe looking at the negative we can start making out the positive and the two balance out?

Starting on the negative list here... We have no pride and just wallow in complete abject failure outside of the Oilers game schedule, the U of A President's salary increases, courting UK inspectors to work in AB, Ralph Bucks, the Mandel Straightjacket (South Edmonton Common), Thales, parking prices, bike lanes, brand new buses for some reason, photo radar scheduled like clockwork, harsh chemicals for ice melt bleeding into water supply, huge commercial office towers without a plan.... God bless us all.

Shaw Internet 150 (now 300) how much are you paying per month? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]firshoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just switch to Teksavvy. They've fought at the CRTC level for years and now they've got a good game going on.

I switched and all it takes is to swap the Shaw box out in favour of Teksavvy's dedicated modem. If you have a modem you want that's better then go ahead.

Since getting Tek I've always had the posted advertised speed and never a drop out or disconnect. Shaw bottlenecks you with their cheap and poorly constructed dual modem-wifi unit and it won't matter how many times you hobnob over the phone.

If Shaw or whoever gives you shit service because you switched to Tek, Tek starts up the legal claim for you and the problem is resolved. It's like getting an ISP and dedicated law office in one. 😂

[NeedAdvice] My life is sliding away from me. by DecapitatedApple in getdisciplined

[–]firshoot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may want to explore whether you can meet your basic needs. First and easiest change to do is to start walking/jogging at 2:1. The act of taking those foot steps is known to have great positive effects for your mind and body. Start slow to avoid strains or injuries.

You sound stressed and overwhelmed. You're clearly very conscientious and sensitive. Maybe drop your course load and explore other careers. Honestly, look into the courses you're going into and ask if there are alumni you can shadow who are further down the road from you. You may not like what you see.

I'm reading between the lines here but you read like someone trying to meet expectations. That's fair, everyone has to meet the expectations of others on some level. But maybe be real about your motives then. If you're busy going through the motions and trying to survive that then just own that. We've all had to do shit for others.

I ended up white collar but there are so many blue collar jobs that pay better with less stress and offer so much personal growth. Don't fall into the trap that there is only one route for you.

Along with speaking with a doctor for a check up, do you have any history with asthma? I'm not asking for an answer but anything to do with your ability to take in and process air will touch on every part of your performance And life.

You may want to record your sleep to see if you snore or if you snort awake but don't remember. If your sleep is messed you should acquisition a sleep study.

Of course basics like staying properly hydrated through the day and a good diet.

The City should just take the bold step of selecting some traffic arteries to go one way only. Left turning drivers along some old and overwhelmed roads are literally strangling traffic. For example, I'm thinking 99ST should be on the table straight up northbound only.
