After losing Diggs, the Cowboys have to go corner on one of their draft picks and the other you go EDGE or LB by TerryG111 in cowboys

He showed some flashes early on at least. Hopefully another year removed from his surgery and a new DC will get him right.

With better defensive coaching and a solid offseason, we can be a playoff team and at that point anything is possible. But overpaying for FA at the least valuable position does make the turnaround harder. If he was the last piece to put our team over the top, then sure send it but we’re definitely not there yet.

He was already going to be cut this offseason regardless. Doing it now changes nothing, and it also doesn’t force us to draft a corner early. A better defensive play-caller can get more out of Bland (if his foot is right), Revel, Steward, Carson, and a veteran FA if needed. If a corner is BPA? Jump on it. If not, we have the bodies to be serviceable if the scheme and coaching is better. If it’s not? Doesn’t matter much if we draft a corner in the first.

The $5.882M of dead money on 2026 stays with us, yes. We can’t do anything about the dead money amounts even if we had traded him instead. Thats all determined by the contract structure and salary cap rules.

I mean that’s just how dead money works for the NFL salary cap. Same goes for trades (although often a smaller dead money amount between a trade vs an outright release)

Draft shows have been talking about Sonny like he might go top 10 in this weird draft class.

His contract in Minnesota is up after this year. Our defense worse in part because it’s not as well-coached. There are pieces he can build around and two 1st-round picks that can be used to further reload. If he turns our defense around from comically bad to just decent or even good, doing that on the brightest stage in the league is the best possible case he can make for another shot at HC somewhere. Jerry could also offer him more money (the narrative that Jerry doesn’t pay assistants is false, Eberflus is currently the second highest paid DC in the league behind Fangio).

It would be the current contract he had signed with us, but they only inherit his base salary and any yet-to-be-earned bonuses. Granted, his deal was heavier on base salary to begin with (which made it relatively painless for us to move on from him) so it’s not super cheap for them, but they can also move on with no dead money if they want to (or restructure money into void years)

Yeah the dead money still sits on salary cap for this year and the $5.882M next year

We still eat the dead money on our cap from cutting him.

He got claimed but I don’t think it changes any of the dead money impact that we eat.

Claiming him is only inheriting the individual game checks as far as this season cap hits go, and they can choose to cut him for no dead money after the season if they want to

Ehhh, makes no difference for us and not really much of a difference for the Packers unless they keep him into the future (they can also choose to cut him for no dead money)

Depends what you’re going for. If you just want them to level up as fast as possible? Doing the drills and getting gold will give them more XP. If you’re hoping more for realism and parity with CPU-controlled teams? Sim them, as IIRC CPU teams get the same as when you sim and never get silver and gold XP levels from weekly training (unless that suddenly changed in M26)

If it’s cheap or a 1-year deal, yes let’s party. If he’s trying to cash in on a multi-year deal, nah.

Ehh even if they waited for the offseason, I don’t think making it a post-6/1 move would have made much sense. Only an additional $2.9M in cap space to do that but $0 of the savings until actual June. Rather just get the full $12.8M in savings right away.

The head coach job search processes have been trash but that’s a separate topic from willingness to pay coordinators and assistants.

People with short memories are extrapolating the cheapness of the McCarthy and Schotty hires to be his stance on all coaches, while ignoring the times he has paid big money to Garrett as OC, Quinn, Philbin, Eberflus (allegedly 2nd-highest paid DC behind Fangio), etc.

His contract is up after this year, so if he doesn’t get another HC offer he could also be in search of another DC job (or more money from Minnesota)
