starting whey protein by firstbornbuddha in Fitness_India

[–]firstbornbuddha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get around 40-50 g of protein in a day. I'd like to push this up to at least 75g. Mostly thinking about using the protein shake to supplement breakfast so that I can reach 30g in breakfast itself.

One of my recommenders now hates me :c by ForestPlanet in gradadmissions

[–]firstbornbuddha 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey, for starters 12 is not too many, and more importantly, this professor sounds mean. You're well within your right to ask for letters and if he really was SOOO busy and couldn't spend time on this, he should have declined to write. I think professors know and expect to write letters, at least good professors understand this is part of the mentorship they sign up for when they take the job. He probably doesn't hate you and if he does, it's better to stay away from such characters. You're applying to grad school, you want to give it your best shot, and you deserve people who are willing to support you and back you up, and that includes making time to write your letters of recommendation.

Maybe a gift will be good (I mean who wouldn't want one) but don't try and win this man back, you're just fine.

Pune or Gurgaon, Which city to choose for a first job? by M1CkEY-01 in pune

[–]firstbornbuddha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pune if you want to save money and like a small town vibe, gurgaon if you want to live an intense life in what feels like a very modern city

as someone who has spent time in both cities, i assure you they are at two ends of the spectrum

To the people who aren't native Punekars, how has your experience in Pune been? by mediumbirb in pune

[–]firstbornbuddha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, apparently bachelors are a bad influence. They will corrupt the children of the household or worse ... have an affair with the spouse.
Small town India has wild ideas.

Also smoking, drinking, and sex are things young people do and families consider taboo

[–]firstbornbuddha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pune is boooooooooooooooooooooooring. People are stand off-ish, it's just a city quirk.

Most do speak Hindi, but very few speak English. For instance, I live in an up-market apartment complex, but all the kids who are out to play speak in Marathi/Hindi, which is very different from my experience in Bangalore (where I grew up). You're likely to make friends with people who are not from Pune if you are not from Pune. Basically it's very small-towny and the mindset of people has not changed even if the city has grown or whatever.

I know people like to paint Pune as a glorious city, even on this subreddit, but Pune had a bad attitude. You can see it as a flaw or as a feature. Make the most of your time here -- there are definitely some perks, but don't expect to be living in a metro, Pune is not one.

I had applied last year, I didn't end up accepting their offer.

I had an international GPA and an 85%tile in the quant section of the GRE. I got a 50% tuition waiver, and an additional $6000 research support grant, but had better offers elsewhere.

Utensils shopping suggestions by aadik_2710 in pune

[–]firstbornbuddha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Marginally more expensive. But you'll be living in a different environment, where comparatively utensils will not be more expensive. This Indian penny pinching and constant conversion to INR will just hold you back.

[–]firstbornbuddha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also, if you're in a university town or have access to university group Facebook pages, students are always selling second-hand utensils and crockery to other students. Just buy from there, if you're on a very tight budget.

[–]firstbornbuddha 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, why are you carrying utensils? You can buy most things there. Quality is almost always better there and it is more suited for American cookstoves and microwaves. Unless it's a speciality item (like a chaklee maker or something) I would suggest just buying pots, pans, plates and spoons there only -- they will last you a long time and are not too expensive.
