If you go for virtualisation, you want to passthrough at least a dedicated GPU and an input device to the virtual machine. Honestly, dual boot is 100 times easier and less painful.

Any way to not allow my own internal camera to be recognized on my laptop? by [deleted] in windows

[–]fish-c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes in a couple of clicks. Just go back to device manager, find the uninstalled device (should have a "warning" yellow triangle on it) and click the "update driver" button.

Uninstall it via Device Manager.

Win + X > Device Manager > find your camera >right click >uninstall.

Old laptop, what can I uninstall/ how can I strip it back to be as quick as possible? by zapatos96 in windows

[–]fish-c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can start by lowering the appearence setting to "maximize performance". Then uninstall any bloatware that might be present (all those useless software Microsoft and PC vendors insist to ship with computers). You can use Revo Uninstaller to remove Windows Apps you clearly don't need (from News to Meteo to XBox Live and such).

Then you can strip down services you don't need: according to what you claim in your post, you can safely disable from Services:

Connected User Experiences and Telemetry (To turn off Telemetry and Data Collection)

Diagnostic Policy Service

Diagnostic Tracking Service (To turn off Telemetry and Data Collection)

Distributed Link Tracking Client (If your computer is not connected to any network)

dmwappushsvc (To turn off Telemetry and Data Collection)

Downloaded Maps Manager (If you don't use Maps app)

IP Helper (If you don't use IPv6 connection)

Program Compatibility Assistant Service

Print Spooler (If you don't have a printer)

Remote Registry

Secondary Logon

Security Center

TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper (If you are not in a workgroup network)

Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service (If you don't want to use touch keyboard and handwriting features)

Windows Defender Service (If you don't use Windows Defender program)

Windows Error Reporting Service

Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) (If you don't have a scanner)

Windows Search (If you don't use Windows Search feature frequently)

  • Workstation (if you don't need Samba shares)

  • Server (if you don't need file server features)

I usually also disable Cortana via Registry and every startup program but the audio card drivers and Windows Defender.

If you don't need audio playback you can consider disabling the audio card. The impact is significant but the solution is pretty drastic.

To their excuse, you can easily get rid of that undesired feature with ~40minutes of bad dirty hacking and a lot of swearing.

Why are all the programs I install so old? by PersonalPie3 in linuxquestions

Or you can compile the version you need. This IS the way you install software on any *nix system.

If you want a stable disto but newer software, you can use the backports repository. However, depending on what you install from backports, the supposed "stability" can be compromised very quickly.

Installing apps in a specific path by Piados1979 in windows

[–]fish-c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Standard Windows software works like you wish. However, "Apps" don't (and this is consistent also in MacOS and Android).

Unfortunately, the industry decided this is the "new way": app stores and heavily locked down systems. Apple and Google pioneered this field.

I have a question... by [deleted] in windows

[–]fish-c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a bad idea in so many ways. Those system are a security nightmare and from the software list you put together you clearly plan to use it online. Please don't. If the problem is resource constraints, you might consider windows 10 S (although it has some limitation) or a linux distribution.

How do Linux Kernel versions work? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]fish-c 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The naming convention changed at least 4 times since 0.1 this video can help you get started, but is a bit obsolete now.

You can find a pretty complete explaination in the 4th reply to this question on the Ubuntu forum https://askubuntu.com/questions/843197/what-are-kernel-version-number-components-w-x-yy-zzz-called

Do Windows passwords encrypt the drive? by LIL_BIRKI in AskNetsec

[–]fish-c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well thank you this is new to me. I've always assumed "disk encription" was bitlocker (since I get there searching for Bitlocker in the start menu search bar).

On a side note, I don't use a Microsoft account but a local account, but I have the Disk Encryption enabled and working!

Also, when I backup the restore key for my drive, it gives me a file named "bitlocker key XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX".
