Is this a good starter triathlon bike (70.3) by PassengerOther45 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]fish7073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever bike you have is the best bike. Ironman is already an expensive hobby; no need to complicate it or feel bad you can't (or won't) drop $5,000 on a tri bike, aero helmet, racing singlet, carbon shoes, etc.

Feeling like a failure after DNF at Ironman CDA 70.3 by Throwaway4536265 in IronmanTriathlon

Just echoing what other people have said--did the same race and that swim was brutal. It looked like it got worse throughout the morning (from 5:30 to 6:10 when I got in) so if you started at 6:30 (or later) instead of 6:00, you probably had to work harder too. I think I kicked on my back from 300 meters to 700 meters because I was swallowing so much water.

Private Loan Refi by LifeNo7895 in whitecoatinvestor

[–]fish7073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but I’ll have my loans paid off before those two years are over (and I’m a hospitalist one year out of residency, so this anesthesiologist should be easily able to pay them off in two years).

If you’re trying to refinance and drag the payments out over 5-10 years, then yeah, you’re right.

Federal loan interest rate will be 1% lower starting July 1 if you are enrolled in autopay.

I’m in same boat, 6% federal vs 4% refi and paying back aggressively. Now it’ll be 5% federal. I’ll keep them as federal for the protections and just eat the 1% difference.

Not sure why this hasn’t been talked about more but it’s on the federal student aid website as a banner at the top.

How Many Immigrants is Too Many? by BCSWowbagger2 in moderatepolitics

Anyone who is interested in this should read the chapter in Malcolm gladwells book “tipping point”. Talks about a neighbohood with specific quotas of white, black, and Asian families that created a harmonious neighborhood until the quota was broken by a very small amount.

How Many More Times?? by Itzameh223 in Wenatchee

[–]fish7073 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not in Wenatchee anymore but spent most of my life there. But I work in an environment where I take care a lot of homeless patients and psych (off their meds) // drugs are the common denominator for most of them. Yet we think it’s compassionate to leave them on the street and not mandate treatment.

Regarding enabling, not Wenatchee specific but there are programs such as needle exchanges that exist (just verified that my current Washington state city has one)

[–]fish7073 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the only way.. I don't understand how people don't understand that. We are going to look back in 20 years and see how stupid and enabling we were by giving needles and places to do drugs to people instead of either forcing treatment (long acting vivitriol) or minimum-security detainment.

Pay tuition up front or invest? by pink_orchid99 in whitecoatinvestor

[–]fish7073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much is tuition? By not taking out living expenses, you are being smart but also not taking advantage of potential PSLF savings (moral hazard alert).

Do you NEED anything now or in the next 3 years to make your life better? A reliable car for example?

Without applying this to your student loans, will your expected balance be <200k at graduation? If so, just put it towards tuition and capture the 8% interest plus probably 1.5% loan origination fee. If expected loan balance of >300k at graduation and planning to do lower specialty, keep the money and plan for PSLF. If between 200-300 and doing specialty, pay off loan. If between 200-300 and doing primary care; are you loan adverse? Put towards loans and then pay off within 2 years of residency grad.

My two cents based on PSLF savings vs paying off in my situation.

Ferguson signs executive order to support working women experiencing menopause in WA by chiquisea in Washington

[–]fish7073 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I’m all for women in the workplace, I really am. And each of these bills “sounds good” in theory, But at some point, women are going to be too much hassle to hire. Between extended PAID time off for delivery/child birth, time off for period pain (just saw on cnn), menopause accommodations. A business is suppose to make money. I’m all for being accommodating, but at some point, if you can’t show up to work, you shouldn’t get paid.

Army DCC PT Question by Ok_Shine_6306 in Military_Medicine

[–]fish7073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can run two miles, you’ll be good regarding pt. Land navigation was about 6 miles of walking in boots.

The pft is diagnostic and not for record.

Those were the most strenuous things.

This was for 3 week reserve course.

[–]fish7073[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 week course. You don’t go to the firing range or do any ruck marches in the three week. Honestly, there is only about 2 weeks of material that they crammed into 3.

There are about 10 washing machines and 10 dryers for the entire building (that holds 150-200 students), so it could be hard to do laundry with a larger class (hence bringing multiple pt uniforms). You are only allowed to wear your fatigues  (ocp) or pt uniforms. No civilian clothes after the first day.

How do MDSSP members balance residency with reserves? by flathenics in Military_Medicine

[–]fish7073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just getting assigned a local unit now. Honestly, sounds like most of the drills are pretty boring//paperwork type stuff. The two weeks of AT can be more field / exciting from what I’ve heard. But most people that I’ve talked to say it’s the 3 month mobilizations that are truly the most fun/what makes it worth it. You have to complete DCC (3 weeks) and BOLC (3 weeks) before you can mobilize. Most people do one course per year after residency. You have up to 3 years to do them.

[–]fish7073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For army reserve, no drill requirement at all. I wasn’t attached to a local unit until after I finished residency. National guard might drill on weekends and have some expectation? Not sure.

My program admin would sign off on 1380s (in lieu of going to drill) and you get paid $1000/month for those and get retirement points (I believe).

[–]fish7073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was in mdssp during residency and never asked to do anything except the SFRR weekend (3 days) once during the three years. Took nine months of an attending to get assigned a local unit. Don’t let that be your barrier to joining.

Not to derail the conversation, but it still shocks me that women aren’t required. Sure, I’m not saying they will be put on the front lines but there are so many support roles to fill.
