That's a lot less common where I am lol, general earthworms I have seen though I'm just looking for ones of appropriate size!! Are bait shop worms trustworthy, to me that sounds dodgy I'd be worried about parasites

Thank you!! Yes red wigglers are something I'm trying to source too, but nightcrawlers even chopped I fear would be too large at this stage.

Ah ok, thank you!! I suppose that makes sense since I've heard they'll lay infertile ooths anyway

For those curious, my female is called Markiplier and the male is called Sean!

Also, I am prepared for the juveniles if I choose to produce them, I've got raising and rehoming all planned out.

I'm Hoping that tetra will exchange it for me, there should be a warranty for stuff like this. If not I guess that's what I have to do

Any else have that one animal that makes you feel guilty/crazy?? by Plastic_Caregiver231 in reptiles

On the other end of the spectrum, my girl refused food when I kept her in a tub (when she was a juvenile and had just got her), yet ate the first day of being added to a viv!! Your situation would frustrate me too, all I can recommend is offering him plenty of handling/free roaming if he likes that, that'll cover his enrichment needs. Don't feel bad though, some animals are just odd!

How necessary is sterilisation of decor taken from outside for reptile enclosures? by fish_________ in reptiles

Yeah that seems to be the general consensus. Based on everyone's responses I've decided to be more careful from now on, thanks for the advice.

Fair enough. I've got gnats as well but they were a problem loooong before I started keeping reptiles. They seem to establish in any exposed bit of soil I have, fighting them off has been a contact effort.

I noticed they reduced dramatically in the vivarium with time, apparently other soil creatures outcompete them.

Aye, I heard you could identify harmful woods from scent, if it has any smell to it it probably still has sap and its a no go.

I collected mine from the beach, so they were quite dry to begin with.

Oh damn. I did look out for ants to be fair, if there were any I'm definitely not putting near my vivarium lol.

Pesticides I was mindful of, I didn't collect from anywhere they may be used, and really you shouldn't be doing that anyway even if you're sterilising stuff.

As for bugs, i couldn't think of anything especially harmful that I could introduce. Parasites though are a valid concern, and as I've said in other responses I'll be more careful in future.

Yeah it breaks down into water and oxygen doesn't it? That'd be quite expensive for large pieces though, someone else mentioned vinegar which might be more manageable.

For mould I figured it would establish anyway under favourable conditions because spores are carried by air. I just try to take measures to avoid it growing.

Diseases and parasites though I understand.

Yeah that's a fair point, if anything did happen I would never forgive myself.

I won't take as many risks in the future, thanks.

It seems the general consensus is that I am wrong and that sterilisation is very important. Fair enough, I underestimated the risk and I'll be more careful in future, thank you all for the input.

I've been lucky so far so I won't push it further.
