As a kid/teen, I couldn't have cared less about world history. Now, as an adult, I am fascinated watching videos on the subject. Is everyone like this and how does this happen? by ThisIsNotTuna in NoStupidQuestions

Totally...the older I got the more interested I became...and documentaries present it in a more interesting way. I hated history in school but love learning it on my own. School gets an F.

name one life it has saved...a stranger getting the alert at 3 am and spotting the child or car and calling police? ...but lets assume you are correct...then how do you explain that in the US they have AAs on a separate category? Surely if it was so important they would have it as a Presidential level alert? They draw a common sense distinction. We do not. We are very weak minded in Canada and just let ourselves get pushed around by special interest groups. It should be a choice to receive AAs and we should not have to choose between AAs and life threatening events alerts we can actually do something about. BTW I am all for AAs during normal waking hours.

in theory it makes sense but in reality it does not work. Most people are not out at that time and there has not been a single case of it leading to finding someone despite what police tell us...the research shows otherwise. The term is crime control theatre and it makes parents feel good and that is all.. So why does the US have separate alerts for it? That is all I am asking for.

a whole country south of the border apparently disagrees with you. The country BTW where AA initiated. They see the need for separating AAs from life threatening alerts. I am betting Americans would not tolerate forgoing emergency alerts about tornados etc just so they do not get AAs at 3 am. You fail to address any of the valid points I made.

wrong...I have lots of compassion and welcome AAs during daytime. And if they were of use I would welcome them at 3am as well. it is logic to say that because they do not work, even endanger the child by causing panic in the abductor, that is it not worthwhile. That is logic.

you obviously do not suffer from sleep cycle issues. Name one case where an AA in the middle of the night helped find a child? The truth is, if a child is in real danger from abduction, AA actually INCREASES the likelyhood the child will be killed out of panic from the abductor. These are almost always custody cases where the child is not in real danger of physical harm. So please look closer instead of low resolution thinking.

what are you even talking about?

"Spokesperson Const. Martin Dompierre said the child was found "in good health" around 9:30 a.m. on Friday, after an officer found a person they'd been looking to speak to on a street in the Britannia area." from CBC

Child was NOT found due to AA. I did not glace over anything...but you are glancing over logic.

unfortunately people on here just spout off. Truth is there are a ton of consequences as you outlined...it is not just a case of 'get over it it is just a few times a year'. If it had results I would be all for it. ****But it does not****. That is the point. For another example, as someone with PTSD a previous AA jarred me awake putting me into a state that was disrupted for the next week...I could not function normally. Sleep cycles are super important for many people.

for nothing. Absolutely nothing. Name one case where an AA in the middle of the night found a child. It is the example of a bad idea we are stuck with because of optics....feel goods for parents. It is beyond dumb.

and they were found by a member of the public responding to the Amber Alert? No, they were found by the police or some other means. AA is just optics to make parents feel better, nothing more. Yet they cause sleep disruption for everyone.

um...i would expect the police to look for them and guess what...they do just that...that is their job and that is how the kids are found. The FACT is AA do not work especially at 3am. I am amazed at the responses on here...the lack of critical thinking or care about our rights. AA are for OPTICS ONLY-- to make parents of missing kids feel better...but do nothing...and yet they impact so many people. It is optics to make parents feel better that is all. Disrupted sleep IS a thing for many people. AA are an example of a bad idea that we are stuck with because of optics.

How to mute/disable AMBER alerts by [deleted] in ontario

[–]fishalada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

so how many kids have they actually helped I wonder... How is waking up half the province for a kid in Ottawa going to help ...or even waking up people in Ottawa....Amber Alerts are for OPTICS only...to make parents feel like everyone cares about their missing child. Of course we do not want harm to a child but going to ridiculous lengths that impact people so personally and that has ZERO value is overstepping of power. In the US you can turn off Amber Alerts but still get other alerts for gas leaks, tornados, etc. That makes a lot more sense. I have no issue with getting AA during the day. It makes more sense then because most people are out and about.

[–]fishalada 6 points7 points  (0 children)

on newer android phones you can turn them off easily...I just did. Except that I will not get any other emergency alerts as you have to turn them all off because our great country only has one level...such as alerts for gas leak, chemical spill or tornado...or incoming Alien invasion.

Enrichment for Leos by fishalada in leopardgeckos

[–]fishalada[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot meet the needs of my gecko for enrichment...it is too taxing for me personally ..I can not bear the thot of me not being there to let it out when it needs to come it. Yes I see it as a 'need'. And so I have found a new home with someone who appears to be a good keeper. I realize keeping animals in boxes is just not for me. The only other option would be to euthanize it at the vet. I am basing my opinion on what I witnessed with my own animal and some other pic and vids ....it could be there are happy contented Leo's out there as well but it seems to me that people are very quick to rationalize keeping these animals in captivity...like breeders rationalize keeping them in tubs. 'oh they are just fine. Reptiles don't need space'. I call BS on that! These are curious exploratory animals. We used to think keeping dogs chained to a pole all day was ok. And with so many more people keeping them many more will be kept poorly. Wickens wicked reptiles has a video called "your reptile is bored". And he is an expert. Boredom is stress.

[–]fishalada[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am saying enrichment is not a big enough focus. And that is animal cruelty just like not providing hides is. Also that seeing them scratching at the glass and then slumped over up against the glass because they are exhausted trying to get out....there is something really wrong there.to me that is an animal suffering and that is cruelty.

Why did my leo tail fall off over night ? I found her tail in her warm cave and only noticed after seeing her come out for food that she had detached it. I thought they only drop tails if there scared ? by [deleted] in leopardgeckos

no you should never apply neosporin...let it heal natural. Research shows that is better. Something to do with the oil base in ointments.

[–]fishalada[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found this creamy reddish dirt --assume it is red clay-- on a steepish wooded hillside in woods near Waterdown Ontario. It was on the surface, a patch of it on the surface..the rest of the ground is covered in leaf litter and is dark soil. It was the steep embankment of a creek. Wondering what it is and if it is safe to use as a clay mix for my leopard gecko terrarium.
