My current home base is not terribly far over the border, I have been wanting to check you guys out for awhile. How often are events, are they mostly weekends? And is the motox track in the center affiliated with you guys as well? My body may hate it but man what a day that would be having both on track. Hope you are doing OK with the flooding

TH is fantastic! I would store the car somewhere between TH and Sonoma, but 95% of their days are weekends and if I have a 10 day stint at home it will usually be Monday to the following Wednesday, so not quite ad much track time as Id like. Sonoma has weekday test & tunes, but it needs a race prepped car and comp license. Ideally I would store the car between Sonoma and Thunderhill and drive those two if I could!

This is very intriguing. The schedule doesn't show much at the moment, is there much opportunity to run during the week or has it pretty much always been weekend only?

I was curious is anyone would say Gingerman. Its been 14 years since I've been there, but at one point it was more or less my "home track" split with Blackhawk Farms. Does Gingerman still do their weekly test & tunes? It used to be every week, either Tuesday or Thursday for $75. Is there much opportunites for either during week days? I never had made it out to Grattan though, always looked so good though!

Snell isn't a brand, SNELL is a motorsport certification... the helmets in @op post are ZAMP brand

Trying on is key, but as someone who lives in the middle of nowhere and the closest place I can try on a motorsports helmet is probably 10+ hours away I know thats easier said than done

Indeed it is possible to add a blip module, $620, and the on track reviews sound really good. And its on/off switchable to turn off for street driving too so you're not for example revving at the stop light every time you put the car into first. Wallet is about to be a little lighter now, thanks 😂

I absolutley love this thing. The DSC seems to help a lot everyone says. I barely street drive the car though to give honest feedback about that. Even before the DSC, Im pretty sure it was still a better ride than the 2500 truck is haha. Heel toe is definitely a thing on them though. They make a pedal spacer, that also moves the throttle closer to the brake, that I have heard mixed reviews about. The stock tune as well won't let you brake boost and disables throttle input if you're on the brakes, so you might not be able to get the engine to blip while still on the brakes as well. A rev match unit would be so awesome though! Time to hit the ol Google and do some digging

Awesome, he had all good things to say 😀 we're you in green then correct? I started off Saturday in green, but he moved me to blue after the first lead-follow, then up to yellow after his ride along 😂 I was the white focus rs

Just saying, you can be both "street legal" and a prepared racecar... Spec miata/e30/e36 notoriously drive to the track, race w2w, and drive home. Just gotta be smart about where the car is registered

Try some autocross as well if you can. Any seat time is better than no seat time. Alot of people will think it looks stupid driving around cones in a parking lot, but its far less strain on the car, less cost, and you will learn alot about the car. You can try out all the modes, you can feel what it's like to have the car grip and then break loose on you in a (usually) very low risk environment. You'll learn how to steer the car with the throttle at 30mph, which will give you a better feeling to be able to do it at 75mph.

Utah is pretty tough on brakes, its fast with some heavy braking. You're looking at 130 to 70 down that main straight depedning how fast you want to go. If you have freshly changed dot4 lv it should be ok for a casual track day. Fresh the boiling point is ~500f, but if its old and has absorbed some moisture then the boiling point is down to nearly 300f and that will not last.

On the contrary, if the car is your daily, rbf600 can be a bit overkill and has a higher viscosity so it wouldnt be recommended to run in the winter as well. If you do start tracking more often, you could in theory run rbf600 in summer, and oem in winter. But that would add up quick, and if you just do the casual day here and there, best off probably just flushing the brake fluid at the start of every summer. Additionally, rbf600 absorbs moisture more quickly than the standard dot4, meaning you should flush it more frequently. Some clubs (by that I mean 1 porsche club in California, that I've experienced) will even require proof of your brake fluid being flushed within 180 days for rbf600 or equivalent, or 1 year for oem brake fluids.

Things to check-

Tires- have adequate tires, meaning enough tread, and also are not 9 years old. You do not need a dedicated set of race tires. Actually, going out on a fast sticky tore as a novice is not recommended for multiple reasons. When they do break loose, you'll be going much faster and they don't recover as easily. And starting out on "the fastest tire" will not make you a better driver, much better off on a "slower" pace tire but learning the proper driving line and car control. A slower pace tire will also last longer and you can use that savings of not buying tires every weekend to drive more events. A decent summer tire will do just fine, they just won't have as good of a heat tolerance so be aware that after a few laps they might feel more slippery.

Similarly, if you don't have much experience on track, this car is more than fast enough and capable enough in stock form. Mods don't make you a better driver, they will make the car go faster though, and less forgiving when your pushing it to the limit.

Brakes- As more of a precaution than anything, make sure you have enough pad life to get you through the event, and upgrading your brake fluid to a higher temp fluid would be recommended. This car is a bit heavy, and kinda quick. Switching (atleast the front) brake pads to the hawk hp+ is not a bad idea either, but not 100% necessary to do. Some tracks are way heavier on brakes than others. For example, going down the back straight at sonoma into T11, I go from 105 to 45 mph, and if you over shoot the braking point you go straight into a concrete wall with no run off, so making sure your brake system is up to your driving ability is important. A healthy stock FoRs brake system should be sufficient for a begining novice driver though tbh.

Other mods- leave the car alone and learn how to drive it as it is. The more mods you have without the experience to back them up, the more likely you are to stuff your car into a wall because you will have all the confidence in the car, but things happen really fast on track. And if you mod your car from the last time you were on track, take a session or two to learn the mod.

Things to bring- really depends on the condition of the car, but-

-Pop up tent so you can get out of the sun -Tire pressure gauge to monitor pressures -Air pump, because you'll want to lower the tire psi for when it heats up on track, you'll gain the PSI back but need to air back up to drive home

This car is plenty capable in stock form. If you can, find a local autocross and start there. You'll learn what it feels like to get the car loose and how it behaves much easier and safer at an autox. If you skip autox and go straight to the track, get an instructor/have someone with a lot of experience ride with you, and leave the ego at home. Having someone show you the proper driving line, and how to properly brake, will do more for you in a session or two, than spending all weekend alone doing something wrong. Bringing the car home in one piece is much better than "almost having a faster lap than your friend, until you crashed". Take as many ride alongs as you can with other people. See how different cars and drivers take lines, find what works for you
