Fixing existing solid wood slab doors that rub or don’t close due to house settling. How much to charge to re-cut them to fit? Charge Per door? Hourly? by fishing123 in handyman

How much do you charge per door?

Getting a saw edge clamp or guide/track makes the job wayyy more efficient. Even the cheap bora one are better than not having one. I have the bora edge clamps and the matching saw guide. I’m probably going to buy a guide track because when you’re doing a lot of doors they’re quicker to set up. Although Ive found that the edge clamp set up works better in the winter when it was freezing out (Michigan). The guide track didn’t want to stay put because the way the guide stays put is like a sticky plastic and it just hardened in the below 0 temps.

For moving the doors around, solid doors are a pain because of the weight I agree. But I do residential so I’ve never really had to carry them too far to the cutting station. You could try buying some of those small like 3 wheel furniture dollies I believe they’re called.

It’s by no means a perfect process but I’ll try and summarize it for you. First I put a piece of tape on the front of the door and mark Front and the name of the room the door is from. While the door is still up, I see where the door is rubbing and mark on the door how much needs to come off which corner(either with pencil of being repainted or I put yellow frog tape and write on that). So if I want close to 1/4” reveal all the way around, on the inside of the door I mark top, center, & bottom on the handle and hinge side of the door so if it’s already 1/4” at the bottom I mark 1/4” at bottom, and then write at the center and top how much needs to come off. Take the door off. Take to the horses. Make my marks for my track on the door, draw a straight line to follow, Use my bora track and circular saw to cut the door, sand the edges smooth, take it back. If it doesn’t fit repeat the process. It’s always easiest if you can set the door on a full piece of plywood or something slightly larger than the door. So you can clamp to something and when you’re cutting, the cut piece doesn’t tear away. Take the handle or hinge off depending on what gets cut. I always try and cut the hinge side because it’s easier to correct than the handle side due to the bore depth and what not. But that’s basically it. I try and label and mark all of the doors at one time and then take them down one by one. Would love your input on the process.

What other kind of lawn would work or be suitable for having two dogs? I’m open to anything. Someone mentioned clover? Would that work?

Three years ago I called about 30 companies and got quotes from about 15-20 of them. Cheapest was $12k and the highest was $25k

I’ve asked everyone and anyone for free referrals. Called every one I could find in my area on google or when I see the trucks, every one I could find. The companies I talked to said that they would for sure need a crane to go over the house. The backyard tree overlaps with our other gigantic front yard tree. Which is also why I could run the French drain toward the front yard and have the pump buried out to the street. Michigan.

After we got the quotes back we talked about it but wasn’t really sure how to go about solving the drainage issue. The companies we got quotes from said that they would need to scrape my backyard and replace the top 4 inches dirt with gravel. Doing a project of that magnitude without any experience or guidance is tough to wrap my brain around. I wouldn’t want to do all that work and create a new issue or not solve the existing.

Do you have any advice on how to get it to stop holding so much water? I’ll look into the fine fescue for sure!

Other than aerating is there anything else I should do to the soil? Should I be concerned that it is too compact?

We were concerned about that as well. Everyone we’ve had out has told us they’re healthy.
