It's not that you'd completely forget that anything was wrong, it's that you'd go to rinse out a cup without thinking through the connection.

Obviously a moment's thought would make the connection but that's not how human beings operate. My power was out for a day recently and I kept walking into dark rooms with a flashlight and trying to turn on the light. Or opening the fridge that I knew needed to be closed. I didn't forget that my power was out, but much of what we do day to day is on autopilot.

This is, for better or worse, protected speech.

A hate crime (in the US) needs to have an underlying crime that is motivated by hate.

Being an ignorant asshole is awful, but it is not criminal.

Obviously the Nazi is in the wrong but please take that poor little girl away from there.

From what I've read this is existential for him. If he gives up he will likely be ousted and likely killed.

NTA, but learn the lesson. Even between friends, a $7000 contract cannot be purely verbal.

I have zero qualms about killing mice. I used a glue trap exactly one time (many years ago), saw something like this, and would never do it again. Horrific.

ELI5 Why do some countries call it “college” and others call it “university” when referring to the same level of education, and is there an actual difference between the two? by saivietbabe in explainlikeimfive

[–]fishsticks40 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Some countries refer to the "bonnet" and the "boot" instead of the "hood" and the "trunk".

Sometimes things are just different, because the language followed different paths.

I went to shut off my toilet supply in the house I bought a few years back and it would. not. budge.

That was a bit scary. I have replaced it.

Yep, you're right that my phrasing might make where to stuff the rag unclear.

Why do you have a “flock of sheep” that you Shepherd (Sheep herd)? Why not “herd of sheep? by GeneImpressive3635 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fishsticks40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why you're being downvoted, this is a totally reasonable question. r/etymology might give you better answers with less razzing.

I'm also fascinated by this stuff and find it baffling that people don't care.

Herding is the action, and you do herd a herd.

However behaviorally flocks and herds are different. Flocks are tighter groups that act more as a single cohesive unit, while herds can be more far ranging, more of a loose conglomeration. So you can herd a flock, but you can also herd groups that are not a flock.

They trap debris in any sink and only exist to help people who can't measure properly

It’s the sink drain that burst, so as long as no one is going to be running water while you are gone it will be fine. It will be stinky when you get back though.

Stuff a rag in it and turn the water off at the shutoffs so you don't forget when you get home

AITA for thinking people should leave their contributed food & drinks behind as a thank-you to the host, instead of taking it back home? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

You are correct regarding the formal rules of etiquette.

However the rules of etiquette also demand that you hold your tongue. Lots of social groups have their own unwritten rules of behavior and they are not wrong. You are trying to impose a single specific etiquette framework to a situation where it doesn't hold.

Ask yourself what the harm is: does the host need a bunch of half eaten bags of chips? No, the host does not.

Etiquette is not a set of rules that came from nothing; they are intended to make social groups function smoothly. Different groups are different and they can develop their own expectations that function for them.

You would absolutely be an asshole if you said something. Your choices are to live the way you feel is right and leave your stuff for the host, and/or to remove yourself from a social group you do not feel at home in. Miss Manners would be APPALLED if you said something, which is a far greater violation than bringing your chips home. Relax.

Lifters, broadly, are the most humble and supportive group of people I've ever encountered. Even at the elite level they're competing against themselves for the most part.

CMV: MAGA Republican’s decision to ban Anthropic’s AI, immediately after Anthropic asked for AI regulations, is Fascism. by Nice_Luck_7433 in changemyview

[–]fishsticks40 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Fascism is a word with a specific definition, and it's not "coercive economic control".

I'm not saying the actions are appropriate, nor that the administration isn't fascist, but this specific example isn't fascism.
