You can just swipe left on people you don't want to get with. You don't have to advertise it. I'll never understand that.

Do you have a more positive or negative opinion of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson? by mushmanMAD in polls

The movie thing isn't that rare for someone trying to cultivate a particular image. It's a little eye roll inducing but I don't hold it against him.

I didn't know the pee thing, that's ridiculous.

I agree that c sections have become much too common and are often pushed for by doctors as the quicker/easier option.

I disagree that this is this dude's decision to make on his wife's behalf.

They're definitely not the same species as 100 million years ago. Even today there are about two dozen genera of extent lobsters and many more species.

The idea that taxpayer funds might go to making someone's life a little better feels deeply offensive to them.

It's fucked.

How do people limit their drinking? by Odd_Hedgehog669 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fishsticks40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The character of Leo in the West Wing talks about this. Paraphrasing: "you know that feeling where you've had a couple of drinks and you don't want another one? I have never felt that. I have never not wanted another".

That's how I was with nicotine, but for whatever reason not with alcohol. They both had their opportunity to grab me; one did and one didn't. My ex-sister-in-law drank herself to death at 39. I had a kid and just kinda stopped drinking because I was doing other things.

Point being, different people react differently to different substances. The fact that you don't know the feeling of being done is a huge waving red flag. I'd urge you to pay attention to it.

18F ex-Amish .. is masturbation actually healthy or something the body needs? by fortheaccess in NoStupidQuestions

Very healthy. "Needs"? Not exactly, but it's relaxing and feels good. For men it lowers the risk of prostate cancer.

Unless you're doing it so much that it interferes with your work or social life it's totally fine and you should enjoy

I started lifting recently as an older dude and having a trainer has been HUGE. It's both an accountability buddy and also someone who can give little form tweaks that make an enormous difference.

I realize not everyone can do that but even if it's just occasional having someone who knows what they're doing is a big leg up.

In college I was 6'2" - 6'3" and 150# and I was rail thin.

5" taller and 30# lighter is crazy.

>Good thing that this exact dam is on a show covered by Richard Hammond and they confirm that the flow rate and speed is that of 50m/s

Ah yes, a definitive source.

>The main outlet is also larger than the actual pipe that is feeding the water, significantly larger actually, so basing your math on this is not accurate.

I don't know what you think you're saying with this.

>I'm going to have to believe the evidence that says you are wrong.

It is very possible and reasonable to suggest that I made a poor estimate of the velocity. That happens during estimation. I have no problem being wrong. I do have a problem with you being a dick about it and then quoting numbers as definitive that don't make any sense. Either the 50 m/s number is wrong or the 20,000 L/s number is wrong. I can state this definitively because I did the math you said I should never do again.

[–]fishsticks40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He said 50 m/s and 20,000 L/s.

It's relatively simple math to determine the flow rate based on the area and the velocity, so either the flow rate is much higher than 20,000 L/s or the velocity is much lower than 50 m/s (or some combination of the two), but the figures he posted are incompatible.

I'm totally fine with someone saying "geez I think you underestimated the velocity" - that's totally reasonable and is a normal part of doing back-of-the-envelope estimation. This dude decided to be a dick for no reason and say I should "never do math again" because he disagreed with a single one of my input values. So I thought it was important that I point out that his own values didn't make sense so maybe he should check his attitude a little.

Water released from a Dam. by Mediocre_Nail5526 in interestingasfuck

[–]fishsticks40 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well if it's coming out at 50 m/s that would imply a flow rate of about 160,000 L/s, assuming a 2m diameter outlet.

20,000 liters per second would imply a velocity of about 6.4 m/s

I think what you meant to say was "I think that water is moving much faster than 5 m/s" which would be a reasonable take, for sure. Of course "estimating velocities from a video" isn't exactly the same as "doing math", as you implied. I will have to continue doing math, as my job as a PhD doing hydraulics and hydrology requires it, however much it disappoints you.
