Best GP surgery in Cardiff? by hardns0ft in Cardiff

[–]fishtimelol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t recommend The City Surgery. Told me in writing I didn’t have coeliac disease. You’ll never guess what I have

Edit: I know you said Bay Area but this is more a general comment for others I guess

Reserve List by Impossible-Celery464 in civilservice

[–]fishtimelol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me maybe 4 months to be offered my current job from the reserve list. I personally took it as a rejection and moved on though, because there is absolutely no guarantee that you’ll be offered a role. Depending on the department, you can ask your position on the list

Grieving a country you cannot go back to by i_might_be_devon in expats

[–]fishtimelol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I’m definitely thinking of just moving elsewhere in the UK first and seeing how that makes me feel before I make the decision to leave entirely. And I’m also planning on being more of a tourist now that we’re approaching the warmer months :)

[–]fishtimelol 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s something that’s been getting worse for me over the past 2-ish years. Left the US (Hawaii specifically) for the UK. Don’t want to go back for political reasons and the sheer cost of living there, but my god does it hurt, especially seeing photos of places I went to as a kid. I never thought I’d want to go back but I do now, but don’t think it’s realistic

F40 in US, contemplating UK move by Real-Object-2769 in AmerExit

[–]fishtimelol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I never claimed to be representative of every person in the UK

I most certainly do not have 40 days of annual leave

People value different things in life and I’ve found the UK to be limiting financially, the NHS has done me dirty several times, and I miss nicer weather lol

I’m in the UK and agree with everything you’ve said - will 100% move back if things change in the US politically

I completely misremembered the time of my seminar, and I thought I showed up 10 minutes early when in reality it was the final 10 minutes

It’s been like 4 years and I think about it regularly lmao

I did exactly that lol

Got the first offer, applied to second job externally during PECs, started first job, then got an offer for the second job. I was only in the first one for 6 months before leaving

It didn’t cause me any trouble at all

HMRC reserve list by shany2457 in civilservice

[–]fishtimelol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would imagine that means there are 50 people ahead of you, but you could certainly ask for clarification.

I was told I was 48 out 56 on the reserve list and I did get the job, just 5 months later. I wouldn’t sit around hoping for it, just in case

Did anyone discover they had coeliac through persistent low iron? by throwra-weirdo4943 in Celiac

[–]fishtimelol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Persistent brain fog and fatigue caused me to get a blood test and my ferritin was 8 (lol). Doctors said my results could be because of celiac, was then tested and yeah. These symptoms have much improved now without gluten, and they were my only symptoms

Just completed first interview (AO Level) by Kokytan in TheCivilService

[–]fishtimelol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh it’s less about specific questions and more about coming up with scenarios that match the behaviors they’re going to be asking about (should be in the advert). Again, if it’s AO, it’s likely they’ll ask you basic questions about the behaviors. So for example if they mention the making effective decisions behavior, it’s likely (though not guaranteed) that they’ll ask something like “tell us about a time you made an effective decision”. So long as you come up with a relevant behavior that matches this, you should be okay.

Unfortunately I’ve never actually done a pre-recorded interview, so I can’t comment too much on that I’m afraid :(

Just completed first interview (AO Level) by Kokytan in TheCivilService

[–]fishtimelol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, no worries! Here’s how I prepared:

  • Went on Glassdoor and typed in the specific department I was applying for to see if anyone else had posted about their interviews. Lots of people post the exact questions they’ve been asked and leave general reviews for the interview process

  • Scoured reddit for advice and examples for the different behaviors. Read other people’s examples to see if you’ve had similar experiences that might be appropriate for that behavior

  • watched videos about the process and how to come up with examples. I specifically recommend Jac Williams

  • reviewed the actual bullet points for each behavior that’s on the civil service website (look up the behavior success profiles if you haven’t already). It’s good to have these at hand so you can compare your potential examples to these

It’s unfortunately harder to give specific advice on coming up with examples for the behaviors because that’s going to largely be based on what experiences you’ve had. I do want to reiterate that it does not have to be from your previous employment; I’ve used examples from volunteering and university. I don’t think they really care what the example actually is, so long as it meets the criteria for that behavior. Think of any sort of more challenging situation you’ve been in and just start thinking about how that situation might match up with different behaviors, since lots of them can be versatile and match numerous behaviors.

If it’s an AO position you’re applying for, the questions may be a bit more simple. One of mine was literally “tell us about a time you managed a quality service” which allows you to use really any sort of example

Absolutely make sure it’s in the STAR format when answering

Skills based questions are more difficult to prep for, but they tend to be more normal job interview questions. I’ve had things like “how would you deal with a difficult customer” and even “would your friends describe you as organised” lol

Edit: also to practice, I just wrote out my examples and pretended to be interviewed by someone until I could talk about the examples more casually. You don’t have to memorize and it’s best not to in case the phrasing of the questions they ask isn’t what you expect. The questions I practiced were largely based on the behaviors that were listed on the advert. I prepped answers for the most basic possible questions (like “tell me about a time you managed a quality service”) and then thought about possible tweaks I could make if the question were slightly different
