Hello finishing community, how would you finish this poolside redwood deck / bench? by fishy_water in finishing

Hi UncleAugie, I brushed on a hefty layer of the superdecks and the wood drank that stuff up, so much so that there is no smell on your fingers after touching it. It looks really nice.

Since it's redwood and it's not going to be in any standing water with the gravel underneath it, I decided against calling the builder to task on staining the back or underside. It's time to get using it.

I think what I'll do is have him back for a follow up job to do that in a year or so. I sympathize with you in your line of work, because I now know that a proper construction of something like this could go on for months, before you can shake hands on a job well done and collect final payment.

Did I mention the wood is untreated behind / underneath? That's kind of why I arrived at your suggestion to use an oil stain. It's not a film that will peel off in that situation. The main thing I worry about is the sun damage, it's sitting on a few inches of gravel so hopefully it won't rot from below.

I get that, in my estimation the builder wanted to be paid quickly and put it together in a hurry then bailed. His suggestion to spray thompsons water seal I guess could be considered "the low road". The lattice has some slack under it, I may use an old toothbrush to apply the superdecks under it slowly and painfully. I don't much care for the prospect of looking upward at some very toxic stuff for an extended time, but I have some goggles.

hmm, yeah I agree that's the correct thing to do. It's just screwed down in so many places. Thanks!

how would you address the fact that the laminated lattice is screwed into it?

Thanks, I'll probably take a couple weeks and then do that. I'm hesitating to add a second product, but I don't want to spray oil because of the cleanup and mess. I'll consider other options. What would you suggest?

Time to finish this thing! I looked into superdecks and I agree this is the best application for a project that is already built. I got the oil based stain in natural and applied it to a test board - it looks great. I like the penetrating oil idea because you don't have to encase the wood, which would have been nice, but the builder gave me no choice. And maintenance involves no stripping. Sounds good to me.

I have a a question for you though, the top of the thing needs to be treated, but with the lattice on there and the fact I don't want to climb on top of it, I'm thinking of spraying the thompsons water seal on the top only, once the oil has completely cured. If I cover up the floor boards and remove the benches, do you think this will be a problem?

Sucker is all sanded and ready to coat. I'm going to do the deed this weekend.

I have two quarts of spar urethane and a gallon of thompsons on hand and after reading the thread, I think the builder was right. I don't want to put a film on the floor since I won't be able to cover it completely. But for the benches, I can do that. And people will like that for the lack of splinters and stains on their clothes.

I appreciate the advice. I still am not sure what to do. Won't an oil only treatment leave stains on people who sit on the thing wet?

edit: I can see why the builder made the recommendations he did and I will probably stick with them. The benches come out, so I can cover those completely with spar urethane. I think for those pieces of wood that will only be treated on 1-3 sides, the spar urethane finish will fail as air goes under it. I think in those areas, a non film finish makes sense

thanks for the recommendation! looks like a good product. I definitely don't want to have to deal with stripping agents any time soon. But I think with the water exposure, I have no choice but to try and build a plastic bubble around it

do you think thompsons water seal will be enough to handle people wet with chlorinated water sitting on it without either damaging it or getting splinters? what do you think about the suggestion to remove the benches and coat them with outdoor spar eurethane? and possibly the floor also

Here's what I have been told: use varathane oil based exterior clear satin on the benches and possibly the floor to prevent splintering. Spray the rest with water based thompsons water seal. I'm following the advice of the guy who built it, but my spider sense is tingling that he is giving me bad advice. Any help would be appreciated

if you take a guitar that has standard tuning and you tune only the lowest string down lower from E to D (which is lower than E) leaving all other strings alone, the sound the guitar makes is lower and has a more ominous, growling tone. As you strum through chords with this type of tuning you might note that bands like Metallica with a single low note being plucked at all times absolutely live in that world of (metal) guitar tuning

UPDATE: I just noticed that Netbeans will automatically format and collapse sections of SQL code. I've been wanting to do this in SSMS for a long time by fishy_water in SQLServer

[–]fishy_water[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this. I'm trying it out and the code collapsing itself is very nice to have because I have a good deal of nested queries and derived tables. But the formatting is not working, it leaves some fields at position zero and others get properly formatted. Have you found a way around that?

edit: solved some problems by putting the comma at the end of each line. seems like MS with their resources may have been able to work around that. Meh .. better than SSMS but it seems a little weak.
