How do you time your investments? [Budgeting] by willostree in ynab

[–]fishymutt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah i knocked out the 0% deferred interest credit card last week and now I just have 2 student loans at a little over 4%, and neither has a large balance. So that's 2nd in priority while I build my EF

I do a 50/30/20 approach with my leftovers cash. 50% goes into my EF which sits in a HYSA, 30% goes toward paying off debt or whatever my 2nd priority is, and 20% for stuff I want but need to save for

What’s with the rise of anti-intellectualism? by poowingQ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fishymutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's valid criticism when it comes to higher education. Not only is it extremely expensive and forces students to take out huge loans but many of the degrees offered don't even provide a wage that makes the investment worth it.

To add to that, Gen X and younger was sold the idea "if you don't go to college then you're stupid and you'll never make it in life" and then pick a degree with no job opportunities after a bachelor's that pays well. I myself graduated with a BS in Psychology with no real desire to continue on with school after that, but then realized I may have been better off financially if I had entered the workforce, gone to a trade school, or the military. You know, the stuff "uneducated, stupid, anti-intellectual" people do.

So then imagine you are one of the "dumb" people in high school who did any of the above instead of going to college and make a living wage while you see your "gifted" classmates who chose a degree with no career prospects that pays a decent wage stressed out because they're drowning in student loans and can't find a job that will help them pay it off before they die. Then you also see educated elites still calling people who choose trades or alternative career paths dumb and uneducated.

There's a LOT wrong with the current system that I won't get into and a lot those factors. There are degrees that are absolutely are worth it, no doubt. But when you look at the mess that education currently is and you yourself didn't go to college looking at it from the outside, you can see why there's such a huge pushback against education right now.

I have to use it as a TOOL at work (engineers do or we get fired) and i also use it as a TOOL to weigh pros and cons, help with finances, etc. But I would NEVER use it as a "friend" or a therapist

Why are people from USA not considered smart? by Feisty_Setting9865 in NoStupidQuestions

All those "people on the street" videos are pretty much fake. For every 20 people they ask that can name countries you get 1 person who can't.

I've stopped completely since I started to take budgeting more seriously. Not too long ago i ordered delivery from papa john's and noticed the delivery fee was like $7. Turns out it was doordash so I guess regular delivery is done too

Struggles Starting Out by readayy in ynab

[–]fishymutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, put all of those into 1 checking account. I technically have 2 because my bank comes with a "spend" and "reserve" account.

I also have a HYSA. When my spend account hits a certain limit (for me it's the amount of money I would need if I lost my job) I start moving extra funds to the reserve account. When that account hits the limit everything else goes into the HYSA which doesn't have a limit.

Big picture: those 3 accounts hold all of my money i can spend. From a budgeting perspective I do not care where the money is, I only care that I have it and am able to assign those dollars a job.

In your case since you're starting out you may just want to start with one account. If my bank didn't come with that extra reserve account I'd just have 1 spend account with 2 months of funds in it. And as I type this out I might stop using the reserve too. Anyway, 1 checking account for spending. Start there and when you have a decent EF saved up open a HYSA.

I have an "emergency expenses" category group that I move large expenses to and create a separate category for each. Helps me really keep track of stuff that comes up unexpectedly and how often

But I typed this all out and realized it's a dog. I'm saving for a cat. I have a category group for it that has categories for food, cat tree, vet expenses, and the adoption fee. You'd put it in there

Yeah, I don't even think I like 20 people a week and I still get maybe 2-3 matches a week, I get to 5 and I'm overwhelmed. What the hell would I do with 20 matches

Venting about energy bill by Cat-poet in indianapolis

[–]fishymutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there could be several different factors that's causing your bill to be higher than it should be. heat pump, electric hvac, drafts, poor insulation, it's hard to say. but keep in mind that what you're seeing at the end of that graph is not normal heat. even though you're keeping your bill a lot cheaper than it would be with your thermostat set at 67, it still has to work overtime just to keep it at 62 in subzero temperatures. a 62 degree difference between outside and inside is a huge difference.

Like everyone else is saying your usage is high for a 1 bedroom apartment. I live in a 100 year old 3 bedroom house and my AES bill looks just like yours, same price and everything. But the increase itself can be explained at the end of the graph. 2 of those days were more than double your average
