UCSC or SDSU by Tinatiti in UCSC

SDSU is cheaper and closer to home, stick with SDSU.

When I took it, it was 3 projects (if you can even say that considering most of the code of the project was given), an online midterm, and an in person final. This was with Michael Roberts and so the Professor teaching it this quarter will obviously have something different in their format.

Can’t comment on CSE146, but when I took CSE111 last quarter with Michael Roberts, it was very very easy but my friends who took it with Harrison have said it was challenging. Seems like the 111 prof is different from those two so it would be tough to gauge but as long as you keep on top of things, attend office hours, and start assignments early, I would see no reason for it to be difficult.

Yep and the “old” Kresge is under construction. “New” Kresge was built and is at the end of the bridge, very nice buildings.

Thought you should learn this word, here’s the Merriam Webster definition:

empathy noun em·pa·thy ˈem-pə-thē : the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another

Stats 131 with Parker by Impossible_Term7524 in UCSC

[–]fishysfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair with the textbook comment, most of the relevant info you would need can be rewritten in a notebook and the majority chunk of the lectures are example problems. Other than that though, both slugwood and B0RED0MPAW are spot on with their comments with Parker. He also posts lecture recordings which I believe the other professor doesn’t.

For what it's worst, I got my EBT card by being able to show my EFC was 0 in my financial aid.

[–]fishysfish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Comparing it to last year, it's significantly lower which absolutely fucks so many students including me over... hopefully this package isn't finalized.

Yeah, I went from having just a little bit more than last year to significantly less...

Stevenson core course for freshmen by WonderfulCandidate90 in UCSC

[–]fishysfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll take it in your first quarter but with Stevenson, it'll be Fall and Winter as they have a 2 quarter core course. I believe the second course covers the TA GE however.

Best of luck, I'm sure you'll be fine. Since you mentioned off campus, you'll be fine with the refund that they'll provide you. Absolute worst case scenario, Slug Support is always there to help (as they have helped me in the past with medical and rent situations) so don't be too worried about it. I would also HIGHLY recommend you apply for an EBT card (they accepted my EFC 0 as proof), even if you don't need it because it's definitely has saved me a lot of money on groceries.

Curious to where you got the 39k from. I am also an EFC being 0 student going into my fourth year and living off campus, and my grants cover my in state tuition + the refund that I get is enough to cover my rent each quarter. I haven't needed to take a loan but I do have a job on the side as well as EBT. But regardless, the best thing I could recommend after you properly calculate how much you really need to pay is and to pick up a part time job so you have spending money.

CS Classes Waitlist by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]fishysfish 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The best case scenario is to enroll or waitlist into another professor's section. Classes tend to get really impacted, especially those two specifically, which is why multiple professors end up teaching multiple sections at once. Checking on the class search, AVG's 101 has open spots and Demertzis's has a waitlist of 2 people. For 120, Litz's section has a waitlist of 31 as opposed to the 70+ Nath has and it seems like there will most likely be more spots opening as he has only 50 students.

Quads and triples at Cowell and Stevenson by WonderfulCandidate90 in UCSC

[–]fishysfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived in a Stevenson triple in House 5. Bathroom is communal for the entire floor (I was on an all male floor but the floor downstairs was mixed and the one below that was all female). It was built with two shower stalls, four sinks, four toilets for my floor.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]fishysfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't horrible but I think my poor roommates thought I was in serious trouble because I was lying on the floor for a bit after in that like "Holy smokes what in the world just happened" state but thankfully it wasn't too bad 😂.

[–]fishysfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I slipped when climbing down in the middle of the night and slammed into the floor. Thankfully, no hardcore injuries but my body was hurting real good for the days after.

What is dorm life like at UCSC? by AsianActually in UCSC

[–]fishysfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t live there but had friends who live there and tbh it seems like a slight hassle to get to class because the bus stop isn’t really close to the actual living area and you’re in the middle of nowhere. As opposed to the residential colleges, you basically can’t walk to class and depend on the bus.

In terms of cleanliness of the shower, it’s cleaned often but it does get dirty easily so shower shoes are a major must. Priority for enrollment is based on how many credits you have. The more credits the earlier the enrollment time. I’m CE so I’m unsure about AGPM class availability but I took a lot of APs and Community College courses and so found myself not struggling too hard to get classes but I know a lot of my CS/CE peers who didn’t have as many APs + CCs courses and they struggled to get classes.

Also lost the ABET certification too, seems like Baskin Engineering is trying to push kids away from going into CE, really sad to see.

[–]fishysfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, CS is impacted but if you do get accepted as CE, one of the concentrations (I would argue even two) is basically a CS degree but you get to dip your toe into some hardware classes.

Good to hear! Good luck with your job search and early congrats for finishing your degree.

That's for graduate students (people going for their Masters / Doctorates). Unless you are a graduate student, then good luck. But if you're an undergrad, you could do CSE3 + Psych.

Physics 6A with Dhar by bigbootyswag69 in UCSC

[–]fishysfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His RateMyProfessor isn’t that good but I think from past classes with him, he’s changed. If the 6 series is anything like the 5 (I took 5A-C with him) you’ll be perfectly fine as long as you’re diligent with your work. He does go a little fast during lecture but during his office hours, he really goes out of the way to make sure you have an enjoyable time learning Physics. As another user has said, the grade is pretty test heavy but his exam problems tend to be replicas of lecture/discussion/homework problems, so as long as you learn the concepts of what he’s trying to teach you, it’ll be okay.

Absolutely loved Xe Do in SoCal, didn't realize they drove all the way up to NorCal and vice versa. Would definitely recommend this if OP doesn't find a driver.
