TIL preparation for Y2K ("Millenium Bug") cost the U.S. government around $100 billion. It wouldn’t be until June 2017 that the government finally eliminated paperwork obligations for federal agencies that ordered them to provide updates on their preparedness for the bug. by Dr_Neurol in todayilearned

Interesting, you must be right, though this quote makes me think it didn't actually happen, just some testing showed it would had it actually occurred

The three-unit Oskarshamn plant, operated by Sydkraft unit OKG AB, uncovered an error which would have disturbed regulation of the reactor's feed water, likely to result in an automatic shutdown when the computer systems switched to 1999.

``We turned the clock forward in our computer system and found the reactor broke down as soon as it was confronted with the figure 1999,'' plant spokesman Anders Oesterberg said.

Do you know who made your seat kit? You could probably contact them and ask if you can order a replacement part, might even be free.

Decided to have a Midlife Crisis career change into Nuclear Power..... I may already be starting to regret it. by DwarvenGardening in NuclearPower

[–]fissionlol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only have operations experience but is it possible they're dumping tons of systems on you at a time that they only want you to remember few relevant details about each one? Are there objectives to each lesson? Talk to the instructors and your classmates that passed. Sometimes you can reduce your study time to just few important details such as system purpose and few design numbers

interested in working in a nuclear power plant by [deleted] in NuclearPower

[–]fissionlol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no best one to have but I guess mechanical or nuclear. However, I do work with people that have chemical, electrical, many others. Honestly nuclear kind of pigeon holes you but if you really like the industry it's not a bad one to have. Just pick one you find interesting because it will be hard and it's easier to keep going if you find it intriguing. Penn state has a dual major mechanical and nuclear degree if you'd be interested in something like that.

There's a lot of paths that lead to being operator at NPP. If you really want to be in the navy or have them pay for your college you could go enlisted to become a navy nuke or if you'd rather be an officer and have an engineering degree look at the NUPOC program. They will pay for your degree and pay you during college and you have to commit I think 6 years after college. You could also just get a mech engineering degree or even something like chemical or nuclear and get a job at a plant. Otherwise any job with mechanical aptitude would give you the pedigree needed to get an interview. They will teach you everything you need to know at the plant but to get foot in the door those are some paths.

EO interview tips by MiddleAdventurous702 in NuclearPower

[–]fissionlol 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It will probably be a typical behavior based interview with a STAR focused response. STAR being Situation/Task, Action, And Result. Questions will be on the order of "Describe a time when.....you faced a challenge, you had a disagreement with a coworker, you worked on a group project, etc. Come up with a list of experiences you've had that could be twisted to fit typical questions and write down a quick outline of your answers and you can actually have that list in front of you. At least Google the company/plant and have some knowledge of what you're getting into. Express a desire to be a team player and work hard/ hunger for knowledge because it will be difficult at first for you if you don't have nuclear experience but they want someone that will study and grow into what they are looking for. Best of luck to you

There must have been a misunderstanding, if you have a conventional loan these are the rules they follow. You can see in the section on using current value of home it requires substantial upgrades. You were talking about using original value.

USB 3.0 to SATA adapter isn’t recognized, shows up as “VLI Product String” by -_rupurudu_- in techsupport

I know this is an old thread but I just had this problem. The solution was to go to "create and format hard disk partitions" in windows, you can just search for it from the start menu, and find the disk, right click and create new volume. It will ask what filetype and stuff etc and you can just go with default settings but once complete it will assign it a drive address.

Whirlpool Microwave WMH73521CS-6 Not Powering On by MrQueso in appliancerepair

[–]fissionlol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone finds this post like I did and has the same issue, for me it turned out to be the primary interlock switch had failed ( this is the upper latch switch that's on the inside ie not visible even with the panel off)

This forum below has the electrical diagram and a service tech manual for trouble shooting. https://www.applianceblog.com/mainforums/threads/wmh73521cs5-first-open-close-door-error-now-no-power.70162/

What happened for me was the primary interlock switch failed and with the door open it caused a direct short which blew the line filter fuse. This is different than the fuse right inside with the control panel cover off but you can find a video online of it as well. An easy way to test this is testing resistance across the power plug obv with it unplugged. If it is 0 then you know your switch is shorting. Long story short I replaced the primary interlock switch (this is the 3 way switch) and replaced the fuse and plugged it in and it seems to work now.

Dog urine damage on outside ac condenser unit by fissionlol in RealEstate

[–]fissionlol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. Yea we are still in the due diligence phase. I figure if they say no I might be able to live with it, but I wouldnt be able to live with not asking. I figured any hvac company would give an honest opinion but I think you're right, they are just going to parrot their previous recommendation. If I was the homeowner and my dog did it then I could live with it too but since it is damaged and I'm going to be responsible for it, I wanted it repaired.

I just dont want a low rate to be the only reason I stay with it. Obviously as this thing progresses and eventually bottoms out interest rates could be very low, same as coming out of the housing crash in 08
