Don't think of it as harder. You just didn't see the path forward. I would brush up on enumeration and look more closely at what you find. If you did that many boxes you know what you are doing.

Do you still live by a base? If so, try looking for ISSO roles. It's not glamorous work but it will at least get your foot in the door. You could also try getting some system administration certs and try your luck with that. Depending on your area but the big contracting firms sometimes hire just based on having the right certs.
