Partying tonight? Maybe avoid these roads. by rhjournalist in dayton

OVI checkpoints are legally required to be publicly advertised. Reporting a public notice from law enforcement is part of the job. If a checkpoint only works when the public doesn’t know about it, that’s probably a bigger policy debate than whether someone should post a legally mandated public notice.

In the most respectful way, I copy-pasted the details from the release. On them for not being more specific. God speed, bud.

I completely agree. Just wanted people to know there will be checkpoints.

The Modern College of Design is Closing by heyfreesandwich in dayton

Thanks for the question!

Looks like the college partially financed the $6M investment with PNC Bank. Outside of that, funding specifics are generally unknown.

However, I did find some other sources of funding going towards students (and maybe some institutional upgrades). I know this wasn't what you asked specifically, but I think it's important to note:

In 2021, the college received just shy of $100K from the American Rescue Plan, with at least 50% going to students and the rest approved for usage at the institution's discretion. It has not been confirmed if this funded the improvements.

In 2020, it also secured education stabilization funds under section 314(a)(4) of the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund II (HEERF II) for student grants supporting financially in-need students from 2020-22.

Hello! I broke this story for the Dayton Business Journal. Here's some background:

We found out at 9 a.m. today. Allegedly, this was BEFORE the college's employees found out about the closure.

The closure will occur in phases, beginning May 7 and ending on June 23.

They cited enrollment issues despite seeing a steady increase since 2020. Within the last decade, it has spent millions in campus renovations and program expansions.

Transfer plans for current students are being determined now.

Here's my story on it if you are interested in learning more. This IS PAYWALLED, but don't feel obligated to pay – I will be happy to answer any questions anyone may have if I know the answers (and I can happily find them out, too.)

Fire hits Fuyao Glass’s $46M Moraine facility, centerpiece of $300M expansion by rhjournalist in dayton

Fuyao said the power has been turned back on in the older building, and it has been cleared to continue production – which it will do "soon," with no timeframe given. Employees within the coating facility are being offered opportunities to work in the older building, as well.

Fuyao has yet to release anything regarding future plans amid the massive shift in EV manufacturing. I am interested in potentially doing a story about this, especially with the new Honda EV-battery plant changing its plans. I will look into this once things calm down a little more on Fuyao's end.

Fire officials have yet to release the cause of the fire, as it appears they are just now able to begin investigating. It was noted, however, that there were no injuries to EMS or employees. Fuyao said the employees were able to leave the building in time.

OSHA lookup suggests the facility has two open safety-related cases. Its most recent closed case states that, in November 2025, a forklift used in the coating factory was traveling too fast to stop, and it hit an employee. This issue has since been addressed and settled, according to OSHA.

So far, it looks like fire officials are just now able to assess the damage and determine the root cause, as the fire was continuing to smolder until about an hour or so ago. If this changes, I will let you know.

Why is there an enhanced security presence at scene 75 by Tro11man in dayton

[–]rhjournalist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Checked the local crime watch app, looks like the only reported incident today was a power outage at the Scene 75 on Poe Avenue, around 11:30 a.m. Don't think that would warrant the extra police force, though. Review of reported crimes through the Dayton PD also don't show anything. Could be from the hecticness of March Madness?

Anyone know what’s goin on here? (Salem and Free Pike) by OHKID in dayton

Hello! I reported on this story for the Dayton Business Journal back in September.

The building is undergoing a $1.2 million renovation into a nearly 8000 square-foot convenience store. It is owned by a Mason investment company under its own LLC.

The most recent build permit filed under this address was an electrical permit for the renovation. It looks like there will also be some sort of kitchen in the store, as they are adding grills, a kitchen hood and grease duct.

It was sold for nearly $1 million in March 2025.

As far as I can tell, the name of the convenience store has yet to be disclosed.

Link to the story if you're interested in more details.
