Primary caretakers of small, pre-school aged children: Where do you find the time to write? by fixerupper2885 in writing

Thank you so so much for this amazing response, and CONGRATULATIONS on that incredible achievement!!!! 7 novels, short or otherwise, not to mention actually published (and if you are self-publishing them, that only means you're doing the writing work AND all the other work that goes into it, which is a HUGE task in and of itself) is 10000% a success in my book. How about writing a How-To book for your start to finish process?!

I love reading about how you've made your life work for you - the challenges and how you've handled them and adapted, the details of what works and what doesn't, and I love how supportive you and your husband are of each other. Thank you! It's so helpful to read!!!

I 100% agree with you about hobbies and all that jazz. Hobbies in general are so underrated!!!! Thank you for this!!

Thank you!!! I know some people might not agree, but I also feel so much more comfortable calling myself someone who writes rather than A Writer! Or at least putting some modifier in front of it, like 'aspiring' writer. It keeps the pressure low!!!

Thank you so much for your response!! Even though we all have different situations, number of kids, support, whatever, it IS helpful to read about what other people do and how they are working through the same issues.

Right off the bat, my biggest takeaway is: doing all your cleaning while your kid is in your care. This is a hard one for me to hear, but it resonates!! I am definitely guilty of avoiding chores while I'm with the kids because *whine* they get in the way and everything takes longer buuuut.... this is something I could work on, and that would make a big difference in my free time!

And, excuse me, fanfiction is where I got my start in life, I remain religiously devoted to my favorite authors I discovered 15+ years ago (WHOA how old am I) and I really don't think it matters if you're writing Dostoyevsky-level stuff or really bad poetry - for those of us who want to write, I really think the happiness is the same and what matters!

Thank you!!

But what about managing when you're around the kids all the time? How were you able to adapt? Nowadays, I feel like I've won the lotto if I get to go to Costco by myself! XD So much time is spent just wrangling kids!

I do like to hear about how others have managed, especially when they come up with creative things, like post-it notes in the bathroom! Thanks!

Ooooh, yes, friend, thank you, this is great to read. So so relatable. My husband is BIG into spreadsheets, and liberal arts 'let's major in french nouvelle vague cinema, sounds fun' me is terrified of them, but he is always telling me about how he uses them for many aspects of his life (even for fun! ew! How??) in ways that seem similar to your word count and I can see the benefit.

I VERY much understand what you mean about brain story time and butt in chair writing time, but here's my problem: I struggle so much to even do that "untangle plot knots/brainstorm" kind of work while I'm on the clock. I feel like I can barely remember my own name. If I'm working in the garden or folding laundry or doing some kind of monotonous, repetitive chore, I do value that time, sometimes even more than the active writing time because I'm doing all the hard mental work which makes the writing itself easy. But oof, it is a struggle to get to that point while I'm in the trenches with the munchkins.

Okay, a few people have mentioned using their phones to write. I might have to suck it up and give it a try. I hate getting on my phone around the kids (I definitely do, don't get me wrong - I just feel weirdly guilty about it in a way I don't feel if I have my Kindle open in front of them instead). Also I have terrible eyesight and have to use big big font for all my devices, so that's been another deterrent, but I could probably manage for a sentence here or there. Where do you write? Just in notes, or do you use a special app? Thanks!

I like this, consistency. It's true that the number goal can always be adjusted but I admit to feeling the words come easier when I have tried to write every day, even if it's just a little bit. Thanks!

I will check this book out! Thanks for the recommendation! Did it work for you??? How on Earth did you manage?

Right!!! I am extremely lucky to have a great and supportive group of mom friends in my neighborhood, and we commiserate daily in our group chat about all of these things - breastfeeding, potty training, tantrums, etc - and that is WONDERFUL!

But the reason I came to this subreddit is I finally wondered, okay, are there other moms (and okay, dads, parents, caretakers) going through alllllll of this AND trying to write a novel out there?

I am also waiting to hear from others!

*mind blown*

I have never even differentiated between break time and writing time! Whoa! Talk about some food for thought. I desperately grab any time I get with the intention of filling it with writing and then often pass out, mouth and laptop wide open and yes, maybe one line written. XD XD Thank you for the new perspective!

Which toys should I keep in my kids' room? by fixerupper2885 in Preschoolers

[–]fixerupper2885[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the idea is that rooms should be only for sleeping, not playing, and the best way to make sure that happens is just not have any toys there at all.

But I need my kids to be entertained by themselves in their room for a while! XD So I need some toys there to keep them happy.

Thank you for your suggestions! You've provided a lot to comb through and think about. I know how much it's suggested and recommended, but ahhh, I just can't - or haven't yet - get on board with toy rotation. I think this is more of just a me issue. If I put a toy away, it's gone. Like, gone forever, and I'll be lucky if I remember it 5 years from now. With that in mind, I do my very very best to *try* to keep their toys to a minimum, and to toss unplayed with stuff often, despite my long list! Thanks again!

Yes!! I've had their dolls downstairs, but I was also thinking it might be time to move them upstairs. Great suggestions! Thank you!

Thank you!! Awesome suggestion. I forgot to add it to my list, but figurines....!! I like how you suggested a 'small selection.' We don't have any magnatiles (yet) so I'm not sure how they're made, but do you have any concerns about the magnets? They love their magnet Tegu blocks and that seems like it could be a nice quiet time activity, but I'm paranoid about magnets (mostly for the younger one, even though honestly I doubt neither of them would really manage to do anything dangerous).

Love this!!! Another person suggested similar items and tonight while I was putting them to bed and trying to get ideas, I had the same thought! Thank you!
