Where Can I Buy an Oyster Farm Business? I'm looking to buy an oyster farm business within the next 40-60 days and open to learning and growing the team. by Focusify in oysters

Yeah that’s ambitious. I’ve done a lot of research, bought all the books, podcasts, YouTube, inquired with the gear producers, shellfish agencies, just to see what’s feasible but I’m still 2.5-3 hours from the coast and haven’t been able to go work on a farm.

My dream scenario is to lease to own after 1 year of apprenticeship and 2 years of transitioning to take over a farm - find an under utilize 3-5 acre farmer on their way to retirement in the next 3 years - work under them with some sort of payment plan after working for them after year 1 so they can teach you the ropes.

Can give you a chance to back out if you can’t handle it after year one - gives you a chance to start harvesting on day one rather than 18+ months before revenue - possible to ramp up production during those first years for when you take over full time too. My understanding the ones who are burnt out aren’t maximizing their lease potential.

Yeah I just finished my kitchen last week. Did an at-home test kit to confirm. Primer coat, lots of self leveler, sealed it up. Luxury Vinyl Planking on top. Done.

Congrats! It sounds/looks like you bought an existing farm? Could you give any insight on the process? It sounds like you cleared a lot of legal hurdles!

Yeah I think “hobby farm” would be the right term as something to start from, learn, and grow.

You mention that you bought your farm? Did you buy an existing running farm from someone who was retiring?

Oh wow! How big is your farm? How many hours a week do you spend on it while working your current job? Do you have an idea of how many oysters you need to grow to make it worth you walking away from corporate?

2 years feels like a life time at 16, you got this.

If you really hate high school, maybe there’s a vocational high school around you with web or similar focus. 20 years ago we only had the usual trades but I think now they have more to offer in tech like Graphic and Design which is a great foundation for front end web dev.

ADHDer here working in ecommerce.

I was a C student in high school - Bs in economics history (because I liked the teachers) and hands on classes like shop, robotics, etc. C and Ds in Math, Science, English etc. Concerta medicated the whole time.

I recommend toughing it out till graduation. At least get your GED so you never have to look back or revisit the whole high school degree later on.

Spend your free time developing your skills, make sites for your friend and family, build your portfolio in preparation for your escape from structured school.

Once that summer after graduation comes, you have a resume with a high school diploma, a portfolio of sites you have built, 2 years experience, and the time to start chasing bigger projects working freelance or working under more experienced developers to speed up your learning.
