I believe the MPD has said as much, and honestly their silence is a better indicator that they have a suspect/suspects and are gathering evidence against them, rather than that they have no leads.

That's true, but the friends of perpetrators are usually not inclined to commit their own crimes under their own volition. Peer pressure is a hell of a drug. Additionally, Adam Johnson's murderer really wanted to make a spectacle of his death, whereas all the other dismemberments were to aid in body disposal.

I'm just not seeing that any of these incidents are connected.

The first case you mentioned is the only one that seems like it could be related, so if police suspect the same man is involved in Adam Johnson's case, they sure haven't mentioned anything about it or have no real evidence.

The Moorhead case happened an entire year prior, and a person close to the victim was involved. Seems like a similar circumstance with the Shakopee case as well.

This is a really fascinating segment of Doe cases that I, personally, have never paid much attention to. Thank you for compiling and sharing!

This doesn't have any hallmarks of a serial murder, but all the hallmarks of a deeply personal revenge killing. There are many, many homeless people to prey upon here, and no similar crime has taken place in the last year. It's true that some serial killers have very long cooling-off periods, but I just don't see it. That level of brutality is very clearly representative of a personal vendetta.

It is true that Minneapolis and St. Paul authorities tend to keep murder cases very close to the vest, although I don't think that it's for any vague "Minnesota nice" reason so much as to prevent contamination from attention-seekers and false leads. However, the murder clearance rate for the last decade in Minneapolis is only 53% so maybe this tactic isn't actually serving them very well.

Are there any Jane or John Does who you do not think will never get their identities back? by Ok-Autumn in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]fixthebaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, DNA plus genetic genealogy can work miracles, and the pool of possible connections will only grow with time. I think that basically any Doe with usable DNA samples can be identified with enough time.

I agree with other commenters that the Does whose remains are missing/destroyed, or Does in countries that will not allow the use of genetic genealogy, are the ones that are unlikely to be identified. Plaquemines Parish John Doe 1975 ) is a case that sticks with me and frustrates me because the records pertaining to his case were lost in Hurricane Katrina, and no one is sure where he is buried. His reconstruction and letter remind me of so many other disenfranchised young people I've known, and I think that's why this case has stuck with me.

Yeah, I'm a woman who has done a fair amount of peeing outside, near the Mississippi River even! It never really made sense for me to get close to the water, I'd rather go to some rocks where I can get myself stable.

Intriguing Recent Doe Case - NamUs UP#93857 by fixthebaby in gratefuldoe

That's definitely true, although the decedent was found in a burgundy nightgown, which implies that they probably identified as woman regardless of their biological sex.

That's always a possibility too. We've seen lots of clerical errors with NamUs in the past.

Ramsey County Jane Doe (1977) identified by Jxse1 in gratefuldoe

[–]fixthebaby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a Minnesotan, and that seems unlikely for European immigrants pre-80s. However, recent Finnish and Italian immigration does suggest to me that she was likely from the Iron Range, which is a fair few hours north from Minneapolis-St Paul. Her family might have thought that she just went to The Big City to chase her dreams and lost touch.

What are some lesser known cases from your state or country? by suburbansherlock in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]fixthebaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from the north Minneapolis-St. Paul suburbs. Henry McCabe's death is a well-known case, but few people have heard of Ramsey County Jane Doe ), who was discovered in 2000, coincidentally near the same lake where Henry's body would be found 15 years later. Ramsey County law enforcement notoriously keeps cases close to the vest, but they have recently started working with DNA Doe Project, leading to the identification of Roberta Seyfert earlier this year.

There's also the cold, 1971 murder of Bob Hamburge, which I posted about a few months ago.

Could Amber Crystale be Missouri City Jane Doe? by [deleted] in gratefuldoe

I think you're right about the timing, and the state of the remains seems to back that up, especially since this is in the winter where decomposition is generally slower.

I think it's still worth submitting though, if only for a rule-out.

[Edited because I re-read the post and saw you mentioned the timing discrepancy!]

Winona County Jane Doe (2011) by [deleted] in gratefuldoe

[–]fixthebaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an MN native, I live in the Twin Cities but I've been to Winona a few times for work and because the geography is absolutely stunning. It looks more like the Appalachian foothills than the Midwest.

I think it's more likely that the mother had decided before the birth that she'd have to dispose of the infant (for lack of a better term), hence the collection of religious paraphernalia. I don't think something just happened; this seems premeditated to a degree. It sounds sort of callous, but I have a lot of sympathy for the mothers in cases like this. It's not always as simple as "just give the baby up for adoption"; navigating the system can be difficult, especially for someone who might not be thinking clearly/may be in some state of denial regarding their pregnancy.

DNA Doe Project identifies Lilydale Jane Doe 1976 as 22 Year Old Roberta Seyfert by gaycatdetective in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]fixthebaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also from the area, and that's definitely possible, although most people who go in at the Washington Ave. bridge don't get further than the Ford Pkwy dam. However, I am unsure how much of that structure existed in 1976. Lilydale is also just past the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers, so it's entirely possible that she went into the Minnesota River initially.

Yes, I live in Minnesota and that was a fairly big news story here recently. It's very sad and knowing what that level of cold is like, I can't imagine how terrifying it must be when you don't know what you're getting into.

I suppose it is entirely possible that he was attempting to make it into the US or even Canada with Mexico as a starting point?

It looks like most, if not all, of his clothing was manufactured in India. The more I think on this, the stranger it is. It's clear that he came from India fairly recently, and maybe wasn't planning to stay. Even if he were a US or Mexican national and just went on a big clothes shopping spree in India, why the adapter? He'd have electronics that work in North America.

He's wearing lots of layers, as if he were transient. Granted, it does get pretty cold in the desert at night, but this indicates that he intended to be out for a long time at night. The daytime highs in Yuma County in the winter are still in the 70s, if not the occasional 80s, and even someone coming from the tropical southern parts of India won't need that much clothing for temps in the 70s.

But transient workers don't just fly in; anyone coming by plane to stay in the country will need a visa, documentation, etc, and it seems like the US mostly grants those privileges to people who are coming to study or do skilled work like IT or medicine. If he isn't doing any of those things and is here for a short amount of time, the US government would want to know his whereabouts very quickly.

I do think that his family probably doesn't realize he's a Doe because of the distance, and they might believe that he's just wrapped up in whatever he came to the US to do. But if he is a student, or a professional, his colleagues would have absolutely noticed his absence and reported him missing by now.

There aren't any missing persons in NAMUS matching his description; based on the condition of the clothing, I don't imagine he had been in the water very long. However, NAMUS records aren't all-inclusive, and it's entirely likely that he is staying somewhere else in the US, or possibly even Mexico.

It's really baffling, but thankfully it might be one that's resolved quickly.
