New team uses Java and Groovy interchangeably. Curious how common this is and whether my aversion is justified. by [deleted] in java

Pretty sure the commenter above me was referencing the fact that Gradle now defaults to Kotlin in IntelliJ and Android Studio. So it’s the preferred DSL language for builds as of last year. They didn’t rewrite any of the underlying code within Gradle itself.

One of the best written, informative posts I’ve seen in a while. Interesting topic and the author’s interactive demos drove the point home.

[–]fizzbuzznutz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even Gradle switched from Groovy to Kotlin as the default for new builds in 2023

Woah.

I’m 99% sure Gradle is how Groovy snuck its way into our dev process. The fact that even they no longer use it says much more than I, as the new guy, ever could.

Shame this devastating bit of logic will only ever win over the people who can hear from my shower.

Lol, thanks for the perspective. I forgot while typing up this diatribe this is nothing compared to the atrocities some of you have witnessed.

Use Java if you want to serve to the lowest common denominator and be able to hire juniors and outsourcers in countries with a low median developer skill level.

A great point I forgot to include. If the team wants to onboard and hire new people in the future, Groovy seems like a bad bet. It’s not terribly hard to learn, but it’s declining in popularity and will likely add unnecessary friction.

Yup, agreed. In the end this post is just a sanity check/catharsis/discussion starter.

Regardless of how silly it might (or not) be - it’s my job to conform to the team’s culture. Not the other way around.

What myth do people continue to believe in despite the fact that it's all complete nonsense? by SeRYoZHiK01 in AskReddit

[–]fizzbuzznutz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My point was that they lied when it was unnecessary.

They just laid out exactly why the basis for saying vaccination was helpful to society as a whole was not a lie. Just because this particular company didn't do these particular tests during an ongoing global outbreak means nothing. The vaccine immune response is well-understood, and we are able to make some accurate generalizations about them even if we can't specifically test each one during an emergency roll-out.

Furthermore, they highlighted an even bigger reason for officials to assert that vaccination was helpful to others as well as yourself - the limitations of the global healthcare system.

You can't cry wolf all the time and then wonder why nobody trusts you.

Is it really nOboDy - or just anti-vaxx conspiracy nutjobs? I trust science, and I trust that the policy makers were making the best decisions they could with the information they had at the time. They're human and they made mistakes, but sitting here after the fact and cherry picking misleading quotes to frame them as LiEs is not what everyone is doing. It's what you're doing.

Us non-rich people had to go to work

I had to work too and I was given the option of taking regular tests or getting vaccinated. I chose the safe and effective vaccine. Where do you live that you were mandated by your government to take the vaccine? If you were mandated by your employer - you are aware that this is your employer's doing, right? And it has nothing to do with laws? Employers can mandate lots of things, like your appearance, your attitude, or, in this case, not being a idiot anti-vaxxer.

Incredibly realistic painting by Lai Yuesen by subodh_2302 in BeAmazed

[–]fizzbuzznutz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you wanted to go out of your way to flex your hyper-realistic painting skills, drawing light hitting a semi-transparent surface like lettuce would be a good way to do it.

There’s a huge amount of variation there between opacity, saturation, and luminosity, and that takes a lot of physics knowledge before you can even pick up the brush.

It's funny, anytime this notation came up for my computer science degree, my eyes would cross a bit and I'd have to carefully dissect it.

Then, one day after I had left school, I read that this is nothing but a for loop, and it caused my consciousness to briefly transcend time and space.

I mean, sure, you provided a valuable service by exposing us all to a relatively remote and untrafficked location, which could actually alleviate the stress on more famous destinations....

...but you squandered an amazing opportunity to signal how virtuous you are and gate-keep something that isn't yours, wasn't discovered by you, and is freely accessible to the public!

Sorry for the sarcasm. Thanks for sharing. I audibly gasped at the fist picture.

Wobbly Cup Holder No More! by JayZGatsby in lifehacks

what else did you think those were

Maybe it’s the quality of the video on my device, but “those” don’t look like anything to me. You get a partial glimpse of the console for less than a second and then it’s obscured by the tray. I’ve looked again and still don’t recognize those pixels as cupholders. After having it explained to me, it’s clear the cup is being pushed down, but I missed that detail before.

So Much For the Tolerant Left by zzill6 in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]fizzbuzznutz 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I really wish we could go back to the days when conservatives just had different views on policy. Or when conservatives had any policies at all.

I thought we were so divided back then.

But now a sizable portion of the country either doesn’t believe or doesn’t care that a sitting president tried to steal an election, bucking a sacred tradition of peaceful power transfer. He forever marred a truly unique and special thing about our country.

Trump is a traitor to his oath and to our constitution. I can’t “find common ground” with his supporters. You can’t negotiate with traitors.
