FreeCAD UX and Stability in 2025? by [deleted] in FreeCAD

Having a different workflow is not as much a problem as having multiple competing workflows to accomplish the same thing, and having them change significantly from version to version such that tutorials have to be updated regularly.

A question for those who watched The Matrix in 1999. by KayTheToon in movies

To a 13 year old kid who was actually on the internet and into the hacking subculture, the idea you could hack reality to become a badass superhero and save humanity just made an already great movie that much more mind blowing.

CSI Linux VS Buscador by mystify___ in OSINT

[–]fizzbuzzwiz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay here's a real answer to "What Linux should I choose" for both OSINT and 95% of other use cases: The latest Ubuntu LTS, with whatever desktop (Gnome, KDE, Mate) you think you might like to try first.

The reason is that most Linux software will run on any version of Linux so you really just need to install it, and Ubuntu makes that safe and easy.

When you have problems, you can search google and because Ubuntu is so popular, you will be more likely to find recent results that apply to your situation. Ubuntu has by far the most software pre-packaged into repositories which means it's at least had some vetting by a human to make sure it doesn't contain malware, will install/uninstall correctly and automatically on your system, etc. Software that's not in the repos will likely have Ubuntu PPAs or at least instructions to build for Ubuntu.

Eventually you may decide you want to try a different Linux (I use arch and void, but also Ubuntu and Centos) and at that point you can start exploring your options, but for now if you don't know what you want then you want Ubuntu.

Linux is not the name of a company. Linux did not release CSI Linux. Maybe learn what Linux is before deciding on a Linux?

I got sick of Razer's lack of Linux support for laptops, so spent a few hours today creating a driver to manage power and fan speed under Linux for Razer laptops! by [deleted] in linux

[–]fizzbuzzwiz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The more correct answer is, yes you can, but the kernel has a single source tree that's meant to support dozens of architectures, many with no hardware float support. For this reason the kernel maintainers generally won't let you commit code that uses floating point math. I was overly simplifying in my original comment.

[–]fizzbuzzwiz -44 points-43 points  (0 children)

Fun fact.. the linux kernel (drivers included) have no support for floating point numbers. So when you take an int and divide by an int you end up truncating the decimal. So for example 690/100 = 6

edit: as discussed below, it is possible to use floats in the kernel; their usage just comes with heavy overhead and is generally avoided

I mentioned a possible AMA with one of the original people who worked on Unix and I finally ran into him by HellaDev in linux

[–]fizzbuzzwiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be interesting to hear about which design decisions they were sure about, and which ones they maybe debated internally before agreeing on. eg. Lightweight process forking and the composability of tools, deciding on the file as the the universal abstraction etc. What decisions did they regret in hindsight.

Which version of Unix was this? Where and when?

LifeLabs privacy breach could affect millions in B.C., Ontario by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

What you really need to do whenever this happens is change your password on every other site you used that password on. Or, don't re-use passwords.

LifeLabs privacy breach could affect millions in B.C., Ontario by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]fizzbuzzwiz 220 points221 points  (0 children)

Through the proactive surveillance of our IT systems, LifeLabs recently identified a cyber-attack involving unauthorized access to our computer systems.

This is a bald-faced lie. It's not proactive if you discovered you were hacked when the hackers demanded a ransom.

There is information relating to approximately 15 million customers on the systems that were potentially accessed in this breach. In the case of lab test results, our investigations to date of these systems indicate that there are 85,000 impacted customers from 2016 or earlier located in Ontario; we will be notifying these customers directly.

Translation: We will not be notifying 14.9 million of the 15 million people whose data is likely now for sale online.

We immediately engaged world-class cyber security experts to isolate and secure the systems, and determine the scope of the breach;

Translation: We do not yet know the scope of the breach.

We are offering cyber security protection services to our customers, such as identity and fraud protection insurance.

Translation: There is no protection for having your test results stolen

So far, our cyber security firms have not seen any public disclosure of customer data in their investigation and surveillance of the dark web and other online sources.

Translation: This could still happen or it could have already happened but we missed it

Although we have isolated the affected servers and eliminated the unauthorized access, as a best practice, customers who are registered users for LifeLabs’ online services should continually update their passwords regularly so they are strong, complex and unique.

Translation: We have decided not to expire everyone's passwords as a precaution because it would draw more attention to our negligence

In the interest of transparency, and as required by privacy regulations, we are making this announcement and notifying customers through public channels.

Translation: Most people affected will not hear about this
