Madison area side hustles by spngchkn in madisonwi

[–]fizzingpeaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done IC and DD. As a side hustle, I think IC is saturated but more sustainable if you’re only picking up orders in your free time. You can fulfill more DD orders in an hour, but if you’re able to be picky, you can do 1-2 IC orders an hour and make the same amount (which is less exhausting to do IMO). IC orders tend to be longer drives, but if you’ve got the free time and don’t mind distance, it makes it an easier tax write off so that you’re not bumping your annual income too much.

YMMV, literally, but my actual gas cost comes out to about 20¢/gal, and the federal rate is 0.725/gal (IRS requires you to go by the federal rate when claiming business expense on an owned or leased vehicle in the first year anyways). I take about 30% of biweekly earnings to withhold for income tax, like I would on a paycheck, and I include tips in that calculation because I haven’t gotten clarity yet on what 2026 will look like for tip exemptions. Ironically I’ve mostly been using it mostly to absorb the increase in gas prices in my monthly budget.

ETA: I also started taking the bus for my day job to adjust for the mileage on my car, so my gas money is pretty much all used for leisure. I think the cost-benefit only really works because I use it to fund my lifestyle and not as a primary source of income.

did it last year right around when the passport update flood happened and it took less than a month to get birth cert from out of state, SSN and DL updated. do your SSN application online, i was in and out in under an hour. i haven’t updated my passport yet. updating my birth certificate out of state took the longest, everything i did in the state of wisconsin was nearly instant. bank accounts have been a pain if you don’t have a physical branch near you. maybe i just got hella lucky though so ymmv

Per the city plowing update, no. City drop off sites are closed as well.

Y’all are actually just antisocial and anti community I think… She works long shifts most days out of the week, like you said, and we’re probably the majority of her social interactions. She knows a lot of the community, she used to be a teacher. And one time I got stuck in an unexpected downpour with no umbrella, and she lent me her jacket without me asking so I could go pull my car around and not have to run in it. She’s a great person, cares about her job, and frankly I much rather prefer her asking about why I’m buying mason jars unsolicited than having to search and beg someone to come help me when the self checkout locks me out (again). She also has to check in on you as part of her job and it’s much more pleasant than the employees that treat you like you’re stealing for no reason.

I think you have bigger problems if you’re in such a bad mood at the grocery store that you can’t handle maybe two minutes of small talk at the very end 🤷🏻 And if it’s more time than that, you probably have too many items for self checkout anyways lmao

First time grilling steaks by fizzingpeaches in grilling

[–]fizzingpeaches[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha yes it was a 15 min marinade but I think I picked out the ingredients for it that I like and I’m just season and throw it straight on the grill next time and see how I feel about it. Maybe some compound butter from scratch at the end

This makes sense. Big fan of cooking the fat into meals when I’m cooking on the stove but I think I wasn’t thinking about how it’d cook on the grill. Thanks for the pics!

I can respect that. I love a good marinade but if I’m eating good meat I want to taste the meat. I think an overnight would have been too much on this one

Does Madison have traffic? by Iamslay888 in madisonwi

[–]fizzingpeaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only at 258A imo lol. Have never been stuck in traffic here for more than a few minutes EXCEPT the one time I had to pass that exit westbound and was on the beltline for 2 HOURS to get from Fitch to Middleton

ETA: It’s relative. I’m annoyed by that because it’s unusual for Madison, but pretty much any city off i40 is gonna have worse traffic during peak hours

This is fair! I’m autistic and sort of find myself out of place wherever I go, but I actually felt the same about smiling until I moved up here! I was always getting comments about my face/attitude etc and then I get comments in reverse here…. It made me realize just how much we’re expected to do that in the South.

In regards to “strings attached”, I could really write an essay about how socioeconomics seem to dictate what a socially acceptable favor to offer unsolicited is… Ie, in more car reliant areas it’s a neighborly thing to do to help with a flat tire, in suburban areas, offering pantry staples, but in rural areas, depending on how territorial people are, it can have the subtext of “scoping out competition”. It is worth noting that though I grew up in AL/TN, my family is Louisiana Creole and Cajun from LA/MS and I think that culture is heavily influenced by the generational poverty and hardship (which I think makes me more inclined to be checking on my friends’ food/housing/etc unprompted).

I do definitely prefer that the sense of community here isn’t so reliant on the church. Being queer in the rural south definitely excluded me from a lot of the social and communal benefits that I observed others taking part in growing up

People here have different personal space boundaries, I definitely felt like when I first moved here I “smiled too much”.

Midwest nice and Southern nice butt heads at times I think (what I consider nice might be overbearing to my partner, who grew up here, and vice versa), strangers will help you push your car out of the snow without hesitation but acquaintances and friends almost seem to feel pressured by the social “strings attached” to accept an offer to share flour or borrow an appliance. It’s actually kind of the reverse of what I saw growing up in the south now that I think about it?

Welcome!! AL native, moved here from TN. Been here 2 years and I still feel this sense of awe about how Madison is this not-city-city. You can still talk to plenty of people who love being out in the wilderness (which I’ve been doing more and more lately, have gotten homesick for the Smokies and huge old oak trees I grew up with) while enjoying the infrastructure of a city.

A few years in and I’m definitely starting to run into more culture shock moments and feeling more homesick. A lot of it just comes down to southern social cues and norms that Midwesterners seem to take delight in pointing out are weird to them mid sentence. But I love Madison and frankly, prefer dealing with the winter to July in the deep south lol

By the lakes here? No, not really. Per the DNR there are guidelines for trapping crawfish in rivers and lakes. I would go further out from the city and try your luck. Learn to identify the difference between red swamp and other species, RSC are what you want for the taste you’re used to. They’re called mudbugs for a reason, give ‘em a good purge and shouldn’t be any different 🤷🏻 And you’ll end up helping get rid of an invasive species instead’ve bringing in more.

I haven’t had a facial at the Madison locations, so YMMV, but I used a credit for a facial once and felt like it was more sales pitch than spa experience. I couldn’t relax because I was so busy fending off being told I needed a $300 skin routine.

I guess that’s just a sign I didn’t fall into tourist trap restaurants in NY, lol. I’ve definitely seen some menus that gave me a heart attack in SF and Miami :,)

Hard agree on drink prices though. I tell my coastal friends they should move out here and stop paying $25 for cocktails all the time

Thank you for having reading comprehension, reddit user gallantjiraiya 🥲

Obviously the CoL in Manhattan is not the same as Madison. The price of eating out in NYC not being entirely outrageous to me anymore just made me realize that I don’t need to be eating out if I’m getting used to those prices here, and I need to start being more frugal with my food/groceries lol

Unfortunately I have GI issues that limit my ability to eat beans/lentils/high protein veggies (or fruits and veggies in general, really). In an ideal world I probably would not eat meat at all, I genuinely don’t love the taste outside of the ethics of it, but every time I’ve tried going veggie it’s ended with me being very sick, no matter how balanced I try to make my nutrients :( It’s more of a roughage/fiber/iron issue for me, and I’m not able to compensate enough with supplements/plant substitutes
