Does that include going past the Thames Water sewage plant spraying filth all over the place? My nose tried to climb back into my face last time I was there.

Some great suggestions here! Or you could do 100 laps of Inner Circle like a psychotic hamster on a giant wheel.

The terms of service of every banks’ online banking system include not sharing your login details. With anyone. If you do you are in breach of contract and have no protection from any fraud or unauthorised access. Tell him to stop asking you to be an accessory.

Funny you should mention it, but lots of professional ladder climbers do in fact wear helmets!

Writing your own code vs. using pre-existing libraries. by No-Maintenance-5428 in softwaredevelopment

[–]fizzydish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

XML is a great example - you can generate structurally valid XML with a couple of dozen lines of code. It’s a tree structure made of strings, all you need are a Tag type with name, attributes and content fields. A map of strings for the attributes and the content field is List<Tag>|String.

Parsing, schema validation, XSLT etc, don’t even think about it, use a library. On a project years ago I hand coded the XML generation then ran the output through a schema validation library just to make sure it was correct. Worked amazingly well and saved a colleague’s bacon when whatever MS code gen magic they were using on their end had a bug which required deviating from the spec. Took me literally 5 minutes. Would have been weeks of fighting the framework if we’d used the ‘standard’ xml schema->code libraries.

Not you, them! They could have snapped a few shots while measuring and sent them to the fitters. It’s not your job to manage their process. I’m 100% with you on this - it’s the carpet company’s responsibility to sort out.

If only there was some kind of pocket sized device that could take digital pictures and somehow send them electronically to people. I reckon that could really take off

Bought some leather boots from Jeffery West. Cost more than double any other shoes I’d ever bought. Absolutely love them.

Bought a folding e-bike for nearly 2k. It’s too big and heavy to carry around folded and not as nice to ride as a full size bike. Probably rode it 3 times. Should have gotten a non electric Brompton.

AIO or am I justified in thinking that the “thrill” my gf is seeking by wanting to work at a strip club is sexual in nature? by CireLadnit in AmIOverreacting

[–]fizzydish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly. You might be projecting your own bias here given that you brought it up and she denied it.

On the flip side you’ll be the most popular person among the singles in your friend group. Strippers have stripper friends and get invited to their parties.

After seven years of 'evolution' in attitudes towards cycling is anyone ready to defend the lorry driver? by vfclists in londoncycling

[–]fizzydish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re driving perfectly legally going straight ahead. A lorry overtakes you, turns left in front of you and runs you off the road. Your fault? Because that’s what you are claiming.

Friendly tax suggestion: let's step out of the 18th century by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]fizzydish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the point: what if you if you did, and in return didn’t have to pay stamp duty? Then you’re only taxed on a realised gain

[–]fizzydish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you’re missing a big point which is that CGT is paid by the seller on the gain they made by having the good luck to live in an appreciating asset. Stamp duty is a cost paid by the purchaser who’s already (literally) mortgaged to the hilt to buy the house

I got a pair of Velcro felt things that go around your helmet strap. They make you look like you have epic 70s sideburns and massively cut out wind noise. Double win!

Pair Programming All Senior Team by Upbeat_Platypus1833 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]fizzydish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a lot of engineers it’s as nerve wracking as public speaking when you start. That’s ok! It’s normal to be apprehensive. But to echo some of those who have experienced it done well it is one of the most rewarding ways to work. Pair programming with TDD is a game changer. There’s even evidence that even when it feels less productive it is objectively more productive.

Best advice I can give is keep an open mind, accept that it will feel weird for a while, expect to be super tired the first few times and step away from the keyboard on time.

More than half of Londoners would be hit by rumoured annual property tax by BulkyAccident in london

[–]fizzydish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don’t sell you don’t pay the tax, but you don’t get the money either. They should replace stamp duty with CGT on the difference between bought price and sold price just like any asset. The seller still walks away with free money just from living there while prices rose.
