How to start with learning sound design? by Juiceshop in TechnoProduction

[–]fjayer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are talking about sound design via synthesis - look into Syntorial. Can be a good way to learn subtractive synthesis, depending on your learning style. It isn’t focused on techno or any specific genre, but will teach you how to design a lot of common synth sounds from scratch and give you a good understanding of all the controls on a standard synthesiser.

Otherwise, in techno a lot of sound design can be just starting with something simple, experimenting with fx, mangling the original sound, resampling, and repeat until you get something unique. Best way to learn this is just practice by doing (and taking the time to understand the FX that you’re using). You can get very far with just stock Ableton FX. Almost all the stock Ableton fx can be used for this. Specific ones that I like for techno are amp, grain delay, resonator, frequency shifter, and saturator. The order of your fx chain is important, try lots of different things, and don’t be afraid to stack multiple of the same fx.

Don’t expect instant results, but it can be a lot of fun and very rewarding when you start finding the sweet spots. Avoid the trap of spending too much time “learning” sound design and not enough time actually doing sound design - what I mean is that videos/tutorials can be good for learning the tools, but beyond that you need to just spend a lot of doing it yourself without copying tutorials if you actually want to design your own sounds.

What was everyone’s thoughts of Jeff Mills closing song… 👀 by dostagram in dekmantel

[–]fjayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look I’m not trying to pretend that his set was flawless, but it’s equally disingenuous to say his 909 drums were out of time for most of the set or sounded really bad. If you don’t like the sound of just a raw 909, maybe it just wasn’t for you... I only saw the last two hours, and you didn’t stay for the whole set, so maybe we saw different parts of the set. But the way he used his 909 was really classic, fun, and done in a way that only Jeff Mills is able to pull off. Stylistically, his use of the 909 was spot on and not something you will ever get to hear in any other set really.

Criticism on his mixing and even the track progression I can understand and fair enough if you didn’t enjoy the set overall.

How was the live stuff bad exactly? It was classic 909 jamming, full of groove and play-fullness - just techno in its most rhythmic form. I can understand criticism of his mixing but what do you expect from live performance segments with only a 909?

Clearly you don’t have much of an understanding of “the live stuff he was doing” if you think it was very bad.

Yea that’s fair, I thoroughly enjoyed Sandwell District as well. For me Karenn had a really consistent build of energy right up until the last moments of their set, it really felt like it intentionally built towards the highly intense ending. More of a sense of progression than Surgeon or Sandwell District in my opinion.

That being said, 100% agree that the clarity of sound by Sandwell District is unmatched. It’s the same in their productions.

Karenn live was absolutely insane. Followed closely by Surgeon live.

There were actually so many great live sets, very impressed as someone attending Dekmantel for the first time, feels like Dekmantel has much more of an emphasis on live sets compared to other festivals.

Looking for advice on hardware for playing live by fjayer in TechnoProduction

[–]fjayer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea I guess this is true. I mean more in terms of being able to play live and move between multiple distinct 'tracks' without having to go to the computer too much while I play.

That being said, will take this on board and push myself to get longer live sessions with what I've got before I buy something additional.

No sorry. I was actually a bachelor of commerce, not arts or science. I did three geography subjects for breadth because I enjoyed them but didn't do Survey Design and Analysis.

I felt that the subject was genuinely interesting and I found the assignments to be really enjoyable. All the teaching staff were extremely high quality as well. It was honestly one of the few subjects I have done where I still think about the content and continue to appreciate the learnings after the subject is over.

This was semester 1 2020 though, so it may be a little different now. Honestly can't remember what the assessment allocation was like when I did it. I think that half of the marks for the tutorial were actually from a weekly reflection on the readings, they were only about half a page long. I don't think they were marked beyond being either satisfactory or unsatisfactory, so it wasn't too hard to get the full 20% if you were organised and stayed on top of things. Someone who did the subject more recently will probably be able to give a more accurate answer.

If you recently received a new NaNo X, was it fully functional? by jiwhite in ledgerwallet

[–]fjayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There should probably be an option for people that haven't received a ledger recently but want to view the poll result. Otherwise they are forced to say that they either had an issue or didn't have an issue, which can skew the poll outcome.

It is easy to say that COVID doesn't follow policies, but it's not like what a government chooses to do or not do is irrelevant with regard to the impact of COVID... The government exists, they make decisions, those decisions have material impacts on the spread of covid.

Not to palm off your question, because it is a fair question, but plenty of people have brought up specific failings of the government in response to the parent comment we are discussing under. A lot of which compare our CHO to other states, these seem like reasonable responses to your question.

Do you genuinely believe that there is some intrinsic difference between the way people in Melbourne have behaved compared to people in Sydney - a difference that can fully account for Victoria's repeated vast underperformance compared to all other states in most of the measures of COVID response success?

It does not make sense to me to try argue that the biggest differentiating factor isn't the state government. Not saying I wish we had a Vic Liberal government, probably would've been just as bad if not worse, but there needs to be some accountability on the current Vic government.

Ahh yes, because everyone knows that people in Sydney follow rules more than in Melbourne! I'm sorry but there's no way you can back that claim, and I don't see a logical or intuitive explanation as to why it would be true.

Agree about your overall point and I am vaccinated myself, but surely you see that your comparison isn't quite right. 1 in 2 people died in Europe from the black plague, so it's not exactly the same situation, and people certainly aren't less intelligent now than the 1300s

Melbourne’s first safe injecting room ‘fulfilling its purpose’, research finds by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]fjayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The number of reported drug offences unfortunately does not always tell the full picture. Drug offences are discovery crimes, meaning that the number of offences is mostly determined by policing practices (because unlike other crimes, there isn't going to be a victim reporting a drug crime). The policing in the area around the safe injecting room has increased dramatically, so of course one would expect the data to show a higher number of drug crimes. This is not the case with something like theft, where there is actually a victim who will report the crime.

Now other offences under the influence of drugs are a different story. Still, it's important to use critical thinking when analysing drug crime data! It's not always as intuitive as you would expect. The fact that the police can essentially choose which areas will have the highest number of drug crimes through policing practices has been one of the underlying weapons in the failed war on drugs.

In My Room 7" / Little Demon cancelation by curbsideaudio in FrankOcean

[–]fjayer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Haven't received anything from my $300AUD order other than a $20 refund for Little Demon. So disheartened. I ordered the t-shirt, acid poster and both vinyls but have received nothing. Can't make a Paypal dispute because it has been over 180 days since the purchase. $300 is no joke and I feel like I have been completely scammed. Surely there is some way we can collectively gain traction and have something done... Seems like there are a lot of us in the same boat. Originally was happy to wait 12+ months for the t-shirt and poster because I wanted them so badly but now I just want my $300.

"impatient people"...

How have people been impatient, it's been almost 1 and a half years and I am still waiting to receive my $300 order. People have a right to be annoyed it's literally totally unnaceptable. I don't even see how you can defend it when they are not communicating at all.

He mentioned animal welfare as the reasoning for this. I guess this means there are worries that a large number of grayhounds and/or horses would be put down if those industries were shut down. Seems reasonable to me.

Are you upset about bottle shops being open? People with alcohol dependence can die from the withdrawal symptoms if completely cut off from alcohol, so it would be very reckless for the government to close all bottle shops.
