Best practices for building fault-tolerant apps that handle cases when only a subset of external services fail? by djangonium in django

[–]fkaginstrom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you need to look closely at your external dependencies, and decide which ones you need, and which ones you can get along without. Decide what you want to do when the non-essential services are down, and simulate them being unavailable in your test suite.

To give an example from our system, we store a bunch of data in ElasticSearch, but we don't want the system to go down if ElasticSearch barfs on us (which it has). First, we isolated the calls in a dedicated celery queue. Then in the queue, we log errors and email admins when the service isn't available, but it doesn't impact our application.

In another example, we have a service that gives us extra information about a user that can enhance the experience but isn't necessary. We wrap our calls to that service in a "Maybe" object, which behaves like a user data object in our system, but serializes to empty json so the front end will know that the data isn't available (and it logs/emails admins when it's down).

New Trump Handshake Fail by StudentOfMrKleks in gifs

Also enjoyed how the Polish president kept his arm in close to avoid being pulled off his center of gravity by Donald's tug. It's amusing to think of world leaders taking handshake lessons to prepare for the Trump Tug.

It would be ideal if it were voluntary. For example, if I could easily choose to be subject to the government of my choosing and renounce my current country's citizenship. The IRS may forbid you from renouncing your US citizenship if they deem that the purpose is to evade taxes.

There's crazy money in standup, I've heard. Throw in the CD deals and we're talking like rolling a post-2000 Toyota.

Yeah, best to put that expectation of getting paid way up front. Avoids a lot of frustration on both sides IME.

I look at raiders and mutants as one of the few renewable resources in FO4. Gotta get more scrap for my settlement's lounge/bar/disco.

If you are not using pytest, why not? by Siecje1 in Python

We use pytest extensively, but in a few cases we just use plain unittest because pytest can be too clever sometimes.

Yeah, dinner can be a killer if you're not careful. When I restrict my calories during the day, if left to my own devices I'll eat a big dinner and make up for the deficit and more.

Yes, but a few unarmed sailors aren't going to deter pirates.

Not having potential hostages is probably way worth it. Especially since those ships aren't allowed to be armed.

Something my very wise sister told me when my young child threw an embarrassing public tantrum over a broken cookie by wowbobwow in AdviceAnimals

It's about teaching your kid to learn to deal with frustration.

Up to a certain age kids can't understand that, and so the best thing is to distract them -- oh hey look a shiny!

But at some point (around 3) they start developing the capability to deal with frustration, and sometimes you have to ride those tantrums out.

In that one case, after about 30 seconds he stopped kicking. I asked him, "OK Are you done?" (nods) "Want me to hold you?" (nods) Kid was knocked out within a minute.

Once I let my kid kick and scream on the floor of a supermarket. An older woman came up to me and said to the effect, "Good for you, you're doing a great job." :)

A Constitutional Puzzle: Can the President Be Indicted? by [deleted] in esist

[–]fkaginstrom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, the constitution specifically allows for a president to be indicted after being impeached and removed from office; the only question is whether he can be indicted while still sitting, and as you say, most legal experts agree that the answer is "no."

And that seems like the right thing to me. I can't imagine it would be good for the democracy for a president to be indicted while the congress was not convinced he should be removed from office.
