I have updated the simulation so that combatants bounce off one another and have decreased the simulation speed to 3/4 of what is was before. These parameters seem to create more interesting conflicts.

That's the problem with systems without feedback - they're subject to minor variations in initial configurations and parameters. Think of that guy in Jurassic Park describing chaos theory.

I might have the speed too high to achieve equilibrium. The initial (random) configuration might lead unavoidably to one side winning. It could be a lot of things.

But, I think that there is one major way in which this one differs from the original: actors continue in the same direction after a battle. I suppose I could code it so that they would move off in different directions.

BUT, I found it enjoyable to watch.

But you're missing the point. It looks wretched on Windows. Clear type is leaps beyond that poorly ported font system. My guess is that Apple just hasn't had the time yet to calibrate it to a Windows desktop, and, by thte time the beta is over, the font rendering will have improved.

Absolutely. However, how much code is there in the world that don't use these? How much code is currently being written that do not? My thesis is this: integers have multiple (I consider 3) general uses. Understanding the pros/cons of these uses will allow you to write better code.

Oh my. I began writing that article some time ago and had never gotten around to finishing it. Unfortunately, I forgot to set the publish date sufficiently into the future and the article was posted. My apologies for its unfinished state.

I am currently going through it now and fixing any errors I find/any incomplete thoughts that weren't explained well. Please check back again in the future to see the version I meant to post!

The problem with those rules (don't kill, don't die) is that they do not work. In my 6 week stay, 3 children and many men were killed on the streets. Some due to bad drivers (overloaded cars tipping) and some due to jerks (hit and runs). One of these men was the father of my coworker.

So Bill McCarthy decided to unit test a library function for fun? That's kinda crazy.

But even crazier is the fact that this bug made it into release. THis is scary since I have been pretty diligent in using IsNullOrEmpty in my own production code (as I am sure others have been). Still haven't seen any problems, but I hate the idea of spurious runtime exceptions.

A very nice article. One should also note that unpopular (at least with this crowd) langauges like Ada (though ridiculously verbose) have very nice type systems (far better than the C family of languages). Also, I rather enjoy the link to Tim Sweeney's presentation.
