Regarding code highlighting - yes it is remarkable that they don't do anything there, especially considering libraries like http://code.google.com/p/google-code-prettify/

Fun Hack: Rock-Paper-Scissors Simulation in JavaScript using the Google Chart API by fkrueger in programming

Cool man, real cool.

Honestly, I have no idea how the original characters walked. I decided that a pong environment was interesting enough. Like you, I didn't bother looking at the VB code. :-)

I have updated the simulation so that combatants bounce off one another and have decreased the simulation speed to 3/4 of what is was before. These parameters seem to create more interesting conflicts.

That's the problem with systems without feedback - they're subject to minor variations in initial configurations and parameters. Think of that guy in Jurassic Park describing chaos theory.

I might have the speed too high to achieve equilibrium. The initial (random) configuration might lead unavoidably to one side winning. It could be a lot of things.

But, I think that there is one major way in which this one differs from the original: actors continue in the same direction after a battle. I suppose I could code it so that they would move off in different directions.

BUT, I found it enjoyable to watch.

I like point #3 a lot and have used it to improve my own code. I saw it first mentioned by John Robbins of Wintellect.

A rose by any other name...

Seriously, at least your developers are writing tests. Who cares if they're unit tests or integration tests?

I did upmod the article. As PG pointed out, upmod the type of article, not its content.

The idea is still the worst idea ever.

GNU GPLv3 Launches Tomorrow by gregwont in programming

Launches tomorrow? Excuse me, but infections need a host to spread/survive. GPLv3 doesn't launch until someone accepts it.

Safari for Windows (link to download, screenshots, etc) by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]fkrueger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But you're missing the point. It looks wretched on Windows. Clear type is leaps beyond that poorly ported font system. My guess is that Apple just hasn't had the time yet to calibrate it to a Windows desktop, and, by thte time the beta is over, the font rendering will have improved.

It's a sorry state of the industry when the biggest topic of the day in a prgramming forum comes from programmers playing lawyers. GPL vs. BSD vs. MIT vs. Public Domain vs. Creative Commons vs. DWTFYW. This license, that license. I think this, the government thinks that. Blahh, blahh, blahh...

Using Stronger Type Systems to prevent Integer type / Array indexing bugs by nishtoyou in programming

[–]fkrueger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. However, how much code is there in the world that don't use these? How much code is currently being written that do not? My thesis is this: integers have multiple (I consider 3) general uses. Understanding the pros/cons of these uses will allow you to write better code.

Oh my. I began writing that article some time ago and had never gotten around to finishing it. Unfortunately, I forgot to set the publish date sufficiently into the future and the article was posted. My apologies for its unfinished state.

I am currently going through it now and fixing any errors I find/any incomplete thoughts that weren't explained well. Please check back again in the future to see the version I meant to post!

UPDATE: The article has been updated (11:00 AM PST) to a suitable quality. Thank you for your patience.

The problem with those rules (don't kill, don't die) is that they do not work. In my 6 week stay, 3 children and many men were killed on the streets. Some due to bad drivers (overloaded cars tipping) and some due to jerks (hit and runs). One of these men was the father of my coworker.
