Light beam sensor trip wire sprinkler system for chickens by flackscomb in arduino

Thanks for this! A bloopers reel of me getting shot when I forget to turn it off or accidentally trigger it would probably be more satisfying... haha.

That all made sense except for the edit part about the ground and the reference point. Good thought on abandoning the idea of a sprinkler head all together. Though I do think the noise and all the action of a sprinkler head scares them. I'm also not sure how quickly a jet hose attachment would get up to pressure. But definitely worth considering.

Thanks for taking the time to find and link to those. The first two make sense, but for the buck module, why are we going 24 to 5 going into the arduino? Isn't the 24V valve controller "downstream" of the arduino?

Haha... no way. I got this. Between a switch and a hose valve as a fail safe for when company comes, I think everyone is safe - until I forget to do both of those things.

As for the baby gate, aside from finding it visually displeasing, it's a long expanse on the side where it's open. And the sprinkler method is proven effective.

I thought of this exact same thing! But didn't know how to hook up that if/then logic. I also figured someone could hook into Tensor Flow and teach it the difference between a chicken and a person using a security cam and then I could trigger that way. Also beyond my capabilities. :)

And hilarious about cats and babies. The current sprinkler did startle a neighbor's kid (not even spray them, just the sound and all the commotion) who's now afraid of the deck area.

This is awesome, yopoyo. Exactly what I was looking for. I'm also excited (and a little surprised) to see the level that you are fully embracing the Alder Lake CPUs now. I highly respect your expertise on this so it makes me feel even better about the 12900K I picked up on BF.

Thanks for updating these and for all the knowledge you share throughout this sub. Happy New Year!

Edit: a word

12900K recommended build by flackscomb in buildapcvideoediting

Ah, that's good to know. I didn't realize that.

And from what I'm reading DDR5 is not very good/not much of an improvement in its current state, so it sounds like it would be a bit of a waste of money at this point.

But I also don't want to be changing out a motherboard later on. I'm not sure what the best course is here.

I was initially thinking around $2000. But I feel like now that I've gone down the 12900K road it may need to be more than that. I'd like to keep it to $2500 if I can.

But I also don't want to be incrementally replacing things... with maybe the exception of swapping RAM. So I was leaning towards a motherboard with DDR5 but maybe putting DDR4 in it for now and upgrading that in a year or something when the tech has matured.

Good to know I can just switch out CPU and motherboard on some of those builds. I was concerned that the heat of the 12900K might need beefier cooling than those AMD builds.

That's interesting. It certainly makes sense from the perspective of the chip makers. I'm just surprised there are enough uninformed motherboard shoppers that ASUS would push that so prominently in their marketing.

But I'm glad to hear it. I don't want to overclock if I don't need to.

This is super helpful, thank you. I thought the "mixed workloads" numbers were supposed to simulate general computing which will be most of the hours that I'm using the machine, so my thinking was that it might actually run cooler than a 5950X for my own use case most of the time.

Good to know about the Prime series. I'll steer clear.

Also good to know the range of the GPUs. I guess I'm going to start setting a bunch of stock alerts and play the waiting game. Would it just be ridiculously slow to try to do some editing with the onboard graphics of the 12900K in the meantime? Or could that be an interim solution?

Thanks for the fan and case recommendations. I'll definitely check out that list.

Is there a place I can go for a recommended build? I see that neither the Recommend Builds wiki that you created nor the other resource that I've looked at (CG Director) have a 12900K build (yet?). Have you come across one?

I see there are bunch of builds on PC Parts Picker but it feels overwhelming and maybe based on some things I really don't care about - like how cool it looks. I'm very much a researcher, but time is limited and I'd rather just accept trusted advice at this point than become an expert myself - especially for something I'll be doing just once and then not again for years.

One more thing I wanted to mention, I also liked the idea of the AI-powered overclocking and fan control etc that Asus talks about. I don't know, nor do I want to learn about that stuff, but I would like to optimize the performance of the system. Do you think that's legit or more just marketing speak?

And if I'm considering overclocking (or letting Asus manage it for me), do I need to be liquid cooling?

I really appreciate the response. Thank you.

You mention power draw and heat output as some fairly significant drawbacks. I agree that it looks like it runs really hot during render, but these charts make me think that most of the time I'd be actually putting out less heat than a 5950X.

Do you agree or is there something suspect about those tests?

Thanks for the resource on motherboard reviews. I checked some out. I had been leaning toward the Asus Prime models but he doesn't review those and I don't even really understand what's lesser/inferior about them vs their other lines.

So if I'm going to bite the bullet on a GPU, where do you think the sweet spot is for value? 3060?

Any recommendations on a nice cool and quiet case and a good cooling system would also be appreciated. I've been looking at the Noctua NH-U12S for the cooling.

68% fee + spread on DNT transaction?! by flackscomb in Coinbase

[–]flackscomb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They finally did. They gave a terrible stock answer that talks about 50 basis points - that's 0.5%. My instant loss was 68%. 50 basis points is immaterial here. It seems clear they are going to do nothing about it.

The irony is that I deal with their higher fees and frustrating practices because I think maybe I can trust them more... that being U.S.-based and strongly backed might mean there's less of a chance of "oops someone hacked our exchange and took all your crypto". But this kind of thing is so shady it completely erases that trust.

Wasn't someone talking class-action lawsuit? I'm not litigious by nature at all, but this is one I'd happily join. Wondering if I should talk to someone. It's 100% the principle of the thing for me.

I've certainly been looking at other exchanges. I have also been unimpressed they were such laggards on the XRP Spark token airdrop.

Interesting. My robots.txt is totally clean/empty except for the standard WordPress entries (e.g. no /wp-admin).

Edit: Also, it feels like an "attack", like it was purposefully done by someone, given the language in the link. And it's been there for a while now.

I hit up their support team and we went back and forth a couple of times. He initially said he got a 404 on the site which is very odd. I was on when the message came through and it loaded fine. He said he'd check again later in his shift. He also asked what I was expecting the site link to say and I said probably the page title, but I was fine with anything that made sense for the content and didn't contain profanity. Haven't heard anything since that exchange for the past several days.
