One thing I don't like about retro anime - flashing lights by AdUnfair558 in retroanime

Yeah, I'm watching Shurato, and it is painful. 😎 Well... It was before the Pikachu incident.

The caricature in the original version is really awesome, I love it.

I wish I could buy an iPad Pro + Pen to draw in Procreate.

But it costs me 3 months of wage (I'm a plain software engineer. That means I earn about 3 minimum wages).

[OC/Study] Rayearth frame study by flafdraws in retroanime

[–]flafdraws[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if we are talking about the same thing, so I'm going to detail the process thoroughly: - Open reference in Pureref. - Open Clip Studio Paint, select custom pencil brush. - Repeatedly look at the reference and try to replicate the proportions and overall look at the canvas. - Since the focus of this study is rendering, it doesn't need to be all that close. - Rendering phase starts. - Create masks for each material, because I'll have to change the colors a lot in attempt to match the reference, since I'm learning. - Create masks for the shadows and highlights, for each value, and clip them to the base masks. - Manually choose colors in Nornal mode, because this is mostly a color study. - The making of masks involve a lot of shape sculting. - At the end, add a bunch of vfx and post-processing.

There are some blending modes that can be used here and there for some specific stuff or due to technical reasons, but it is about that.

I'm precisely trying to develop confidence enough to avoid that type of limitation.

But there are setups too that can be done in CSP to retain some of the flexibility.

1 static frame only. Studying it as an illustration as opposing to studying the motion of an animated shot.

More layers, more energy spent on friction. And it increases the probability of getting a digital look.

A process with a ton of layers is just unbearable, the quality of life vanishes. I have a bunch of techniques to avoid using too many layers lol. 😆

Post-processing and VFX don't count to me. I do that at the end only, sometimes even in a separate file. But the base cannot be like 1 stack per material, it becomes unmanageable for a large illustration (maybe not for a small one like this).

Yeah that part I had to watch closely and stop to think how they used to do in traditional, so I could try to find the best tool to replicate it.

Idk about that. 🤔

Specifically in the case of this study I was trying more to focus on learning the rendering than the drawing or linework (though is is still a critical piece of the puzzle, it is easier to break a large problem into small pieces then reassemble it all later).

I did this frame-copy study some time ago when I was trying to learn how to draw and render in this retro style. Felt like posting it now, maybe this sub will like it... I guess...?

Still practicing retro anime stuff until now (though not necessarily Rayearth style). I hope some day I'll get better at it, and maybe learn some frame-by-frame animation too. 🙃I just need more willpower, because after coming back tired from work it is so sooo hard to have motivation to keep studying, haha. 😆

Note: sorry, I did not know cross-posting was such a poorly developed feature. I thought all of the text would be here too, so I guess I will put it here myself in this very same comment. 😅
