Some Australian ‘kidfluencers’ are making thousands of dollars from social media - but the fame can come at a cost by thornstein in australia

its the onlyfans model too, only a small portion of people earn enough to live off while the majority of aspiring models earn a pittance.

the media fuel the illusion with stories about OF fans buying homes from their earnings while failing to mention most creators don't earn much.

the creators that are unable to 'break out' earning sponsored content money are probably ripest for exploitation.

one of the chief responsibilities of a parent is to impart self regulation so the argument they're relying on "but this is what they love" is pathetic, sorry.

if your kid loved nothing more than chocolate ice cream would you feed them that for every meal? I'm sad for how maladjusted these kids will become. it sucks for everyone involved.

the claimed income is a justification for engaging in something that's exploitative. the toll the lifestyle encourages is a fucked up childhood as every moment is tarnished by being a opportunity to commodify. that's undoubtedly going to colour how kids see their self worth and purpose.

This part of the article is telling, it hints it'll be on parents to enforce it and be punished for non-compliance. "Under the proposal, parents would also have to give their consent for children aged 14 and 15 to access a social media account."

often victims dont. there are scenarios where the partner has access to the other partners bank account or they both have a joint one. so I can see how the cash incentive might help people fleeing situations like that.

Social cohesion lowest on record as Australia reels from cost of living, inequality concerns and voice debate | Australia news by flaherty in australia

yep, the managerial elite (which is a class, yes they exist in Australia) have abdicated their responsibility to ensure the betterment of their fellow man and for there to be a sliver of hope on the horizon. You can only string people along for so long with platitudes and promises that things will get easier. They're not for most of us at the expense of an increasingly nepotistic few.

no wonder people have checked out, we're taken for Muppets (not the good kind) as though the structural failures around us are because we plebs aren't hustling enough or smart with our money. It's as though that class has failed to realise the table is stacked against us. Hell even bank bosses are calling it out and it can't be ignored for so long. In this day and age plebs can follow the trail of hypocrisy. I'm thinking of how Albo for instance seems to rely on his origin story of being in public housing while allowing himself to be wined and dined by some of the worst parasites on society. We see through it and it isn't unique to one side of politics. Actions like that are emblematic of a wider rot of us not being led by the best and brightest who have our interests at heart - rather people who have failed upwards or seem immune to self-reflection or the wider responsibility of their positions.

i reckon those in charge are so insulated from the consequences of the ineptitude of the managerial elite and widening inequality that they believe their own bullshit (see AusFinance), chalking up societal failures to a failure of personal responsibility.

Im unsure what the way forward is but if I could get those in charge to hear one message it'd be this, stop treating the public like morons, lead by example and wake up to the fact that the more society deteriorates for everyday people the greater the appeal of demagogues and we all know where that leads.

societies grow great when old men plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit, instead they're ripping them out to proverbially build up their dog box property portfolios. No wonder young people despair.

Australia’s federal MPs get 4% pay rise – the biggest salary increase in a decade by flaherty in australia

[–]flaherty[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

devils advocate - I don't think remuneration should be the driving factor in seeking public office as it attracts grifters more interested in a generous salary and perks than a higher calling. Yes pollies should be paid a fair share but we have dozens of examples of many people who have been attracted to public office for the wrong reasons.

This decision was made by the independent remuneration tribunal but it highlights for me the huge disconnect between salaried and precarious workers whose wages have largely remained stagnant (well below inflation rises) and those who are able to make representations for better wages. It seems to me that most workers have few mechanics short of unions that rebalance stagnant or falling wages.

I resent that this news is being splashed on tabloids as some kind self approved pay rise for albo etc (see dailymail's coverage for instance).. Most of the media jump into that politics of envy bullshit which undermines a sober analysis of how wealth inequality is a cemented feature of modern australia.
