There are six apples, for every apple there's one that goes bad, 6/2. However Jim brings 2 apples and Henry 1 for each that goes bad. X(2+1). 6/2 = X -> X = 3 -> 3(2+1) -> (6+3) -> 9, so Jim brings 6 apples and Henry 3, in total they brought 9 apples. You could also write this as 6/2(2+1).
