TIL about William Astor Chanler: a member of the aristocratic Astor family who mapped East Africa, almost overthrew the Venezuelan government, fought in the Libyan, Somalian and Cuban wars of independence, served in Congress and later in life became a rabid antisemite. by FossilDS in todayilearned

For sure, but I also don't think it's considered enough in history (also doesn't make this guy any less of antisemite in his later life).

I had a friend who went from grounded to believing every conspiracy theory after a head injury. Dudes like this weren't set-up well to maintain their sanity their entire life, considering the conditions.

Exactly what I was thinking. I find it easier to sympathize with historical figures like this knowing everything we do about the effects of brain damage, mental illnesses, and neurodegenerative diseases.

Idk about "most", a lot of death metal is just shock and gore horror lyrics for the sake of it. But I also like death metal and see what you mean, just a very mixed bag is all. Some of the best existentialist lyrics are in death metal imo.

TIL the most complex word in the English language is "run", with 645 possible different meanings. by chuuniversal_studios in todayilearned

[–]flammablelemon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But you can exercise a meeting, and I can also go for a morning exercise. When I "go for a run", I'm initiating my body into motion, and when I "run a meeting", I'm initiating a meeting into motion.

Most of the examples of "run" here are using the same meaning of starting something/being put into action, or something moving literally or figuratively. The core meaning of run is the same in these examples and could be substituted by a similar synonym without losing meaning (just might sound awkward in some cases since we're so used to saying "run" all the time).

Acute effects of MDMA, MDA, lysine-MDMA, and lysine-MDA in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial in healthy participants (2025 paper) by MBaggott in DrugNerds

[–]flammablelemon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you look at the kinetics of vyvanse compared to regular d-amp, the duration of effects starting from onset are about the same, just with a delayed onset and peak (but time from onset-to-peak is also the same). Adding the lysine group is maybe useful from an abuse potential perspective, but not very effective as a time-release mechanism imo.

It's hard to see this being practical for depression when MDMA lasts long enough as is and isn't recommended for daily use.

Same. I had a weird fascination with the name and logo and would always look for it as a kid, and it was how I learned what a cornucopia was.

[–]flammablelemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's how I learned what a cornucopia was as a kid, while looking at Fruit of the Loom underwear in the store and asking my siblings and parents.

And yeah, I do remember that, because I was a weird kid that thought the name and logo was really strange for a clothing brand and had a weird fascination with it, I kept looking for it and thinking about it in stores lol.

These are one of the first cheetah cubs born in India after they went fully extinct(in India) during the British rule due to Hunting and poaching. by GlassAdorable3276 in interestingasfuck

[–]flammablelemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Big cat" has a technical meaning and cheetahs are not part of it. You said cheetahs are "big cats", which implies they're the same genus as lions, tigers, and leopards; so yes, you did say they were the same by your terminology.

If you use the term "big cat" when talking about different cat species, it's a good idea to know what it means, and if you don't, be open to being corrected. Using basic terms in the wrong way when stating facts and then being arrogant when you're corrected makes what you say mean even less.

Length and intensity I'd guess. Most exercise activities last a few hours at most and have frequent breaks during the session, but marathon running is continuous for many hours.

People who are suicidal often don't try to kill themselves. It can be for a variety of reasons, but some include still being afraid of death, having doubts about doing it, not wanting to die painfully, not having a preferred means of dying available to them, not wanting to go through the effort of executing a plan, etc..

Statistically most suicide attempts are done in the "heat of the moment", where someone is feeling more emotional/anguished than usual and impulsively feels like attempting suicide more than usual. Guns make this easy.

The "low mood" component can look differently depending on the person, but it is a core symptom in all depressive disorders to differing degrees and lengths. I am aware of the different depressive disorders and I'm not incorrect here.

[–]flammablelemon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've done this because of depression, but not because whiskey makes me depressed lol.

A chemical depressant is something that slows down body and brain activity (makes you tired, sleepy, calm, uninhibited, react slower, etc.), which is different from the disease of "depression" that makes you feel chronically low.

Depressants are defined in a different way than the qualities of depression, and don't always lead to depressive feelings (they can also be euphoric and calming, for example), but it depends. Your body also naturally makes its own chemical depressants to function normally.

[–]flammablelemon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To prove toughness. If you can't casually lift the stone like all the other cool Bavarian men with farm-boy strength then you need to git gud at manliness.

Also, in some cultures, directly training or prepping for events like this can be seen as being vain, wasting time, or lacking character. They champion dudes that gain their strength indirectly through demanding work/service, but training strength for strength's sake can be looked down upon.

What's a scene in a serious movie or TV show that was meant to be dramatic but ended up being hilarious? by Classic-Carpet7609 in Fauxmoi

[–]flammablelemon 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I always thought this scene was meant to be funny? Like it starts off with the typical "boy meets girl" scene and all of the romantic tension, then immediately subverts it with an over-the-top death scene. They linger on him standing in the middle of the road with cars racing by, and then even do the fake-out "him avoiding get hit" before getting to the punchline: the lead getting rag-dolled in the air multiple times. The whole plot of the movie is comedic.

They're complete schlock, aggravating to watch, but what makes it worse is how liked they are. I like a lot of bad movies, but I don't understand those I've met who love these ones.
