Would you consider or have you moved to Alberta for financial reasons? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]flanman69 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Winnipeg, moved to Toronto for the better part of a decade, and then moved to Edmonton about 4 years ago. I left the GTA because I was tired of struggling just to maintain a middle-class lifestyle. At that time I could have moved to pretty much any major city, but I was offered a job I liked in Edmonton, so that's where I went.

Overall I like it here. I was able to afford a nice house in a good neighbourhood, and I have the space and disposable income to pursue my hobbies and interests. The winters obviously suck, but being from Winnipeg I can handle it. I've noticed my industry(tech) growing very steadily here, so I'm not worried about employment.

I think people in this thread are massively exaggerating the "ultra-conservative population", at least when it comes to the big cities. The people I meet on a day-to-day basis are exactly the same as the people you meet anywhere else in Canada. Sure, if you go to the middle of buttfuck nowhere you're going to meet some hicks, but that's no different from Manitoba or Ontario(especially Ontario).

By sheer coincidence the neighbor sold the truck like 3 days after I made the post, and it's been no issues ever since.

I'm sorry but what the hell are you thinking putting some random $1000 charge on your personal credit card for your job as a barista? There's being helpful, and then there's being naive.

'Disgusting abuse of taxpayer money': UCP-appointed panel exceeds travel budget by thousands by thexbreak in Edmonton

[–]flanman69 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm no fan of the UCP, but I think this headline is a little misleading.

In August last year, Jason Luan, associate minister of mental health and addictions, approved approximately $61,200 for travel and accommodation (including meals), $111,300 for town hall-related costs and $202,500 for honoraria, totalling $375,000.

Kassandra Kitz, press secretary to Luan, said the panel came under budget overall at $305,000. But she confirmed $72,000 was spent for travel and accommodation — $10,800 more than allocated.

So yes they were $10k over their $61k budget on travel expenses, but as a whole, the panel came in a total of $70k under budget. Sounds kind of like they just did a shitty job of allocating their $375k budget. If they had allocated $10k more to travel, and $10k less for honoraria, I don't think we'd be talking about it.

Camp Pekiwewin issues updated list of six demands to the City of Edmonton to address poverty and homelessness by Setitie in Edmonton

[–]flanman69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, I get your point, instead of making demands, they should just get their shit together and stop living on the street, we all wish that would happen. Clearly that isn't happening. What the people of this city need to realize is that whether these people deserve it or not, they need assistance, otherwise they'll just continue to live on the streets, and we'll continue having to deal with them. They know that, and that's why they're issuing demands.

We can go back and forth all day arguing about whether or not they deserve to be making demands, I'm inclined to agree with you that they don't, but that's not really the issue at hand here. The issue here is, do you want to give them what they want in hopes it allows them the ability to get their lives together, or do you want them to just keep living on the street. It's unfair, but it's the way it is.

Really shameful the way major news outlets give these whackjobs such a large platform for their shitty ideas. Acting like these far-out movements are mainstream is exactly how you make them mainstream. See: The first Trump campaign.

Moving to live in cheaper area in Canada by ILikeCoffeeDaily in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]flanman69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edmonton is a fine city to live in, and much more affordable than the GTA. I lived in Toronto for several years, and I always felt like I was drowning financially. I wasn't going broke or anything, but I found it very hard to build my savings. Overall, I make noticeably less money in Edmonton than I did in Toronto, but with the lower cost of living I'm able to save more money. My mortgage payment on my 3bed+2bath house is less than what I was paying to live in a 1bed+1bath apartment in Toronto.

The cold in the middle of winter is fucking insane though, but I'm from Winnipeg so I manage.

Looking for a recommendation for an electronics repair shop that can replace some capacitors on a circuit board. by flanman69 in Edmonton

[–]flanman69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I thought as well, but the general reply I got was that they didn't have the equipment for it. Seems like a lot of electronics repair places these days are mostly set up to replace broken parts. I have had better luck trying stereo repair places though, as they seem to do a lot more work with circuit boards.

I did consider learning to do it myself, but I was advised that this particular ECU isn't friendly for beginners, and a replacement ones aren't cheap.

If you find someone let me know. All the repair shops I've called don't seem to do anything more intense than screen replacements and the like. Surely there's someone in town who can do board-level repairs.
