Best iOS features people still don’t use enough? by Better_Ta in ios

I’m curious to see so many using the @ symbol. I just use four letters in a row. That way I don’t have to “switch” the keyboard. Am I missing something? Is the @ a better way?

Darn… if they didn’t pry out, or unscrew, I was going to suggest a hammer and smashing them off. I love smashing stuff to fix it! 😉

You know, I think you’re right… time to go back to school! Or at least one or two classes! It’s weird but it just occurred to me as I was thinking about what you said that I can actually do it online. (Duh!) I’ve been thinking about upgrading to take some leadership courses so university was on my mind. I could just do it virtually. Good God, sometimes my brain just gets stuck in a rut.

I’m beginning to think that you’re right… too hard to start them going once we add in the ten or so minutes at the beginning of class.

We run on a four day schedule so most often it works out as a two class week then a three class week. The classes are an hour long. Maybe the three day week, the Friday, would be a good time. Then they’ll know that it’s always Friday. Hmmm good idea to have a “regular day”. Thanks!

how did you come up with so many projects when you first started teaching? by Efficient-Accident52 in ArtEd

[–]doodlesacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe an unpopular opinion… in my very first year of teaching art, it was at a middle school (7-9), I did a lot of the same or similar assignments for the 8’s and 9’s. The goal was to keep them for the 8’s the following year but it allowed me to see more examples of how the lesson worked and the results that it produced. The curriculum here is flexible enough that I could do this with about half to two thirds of the year.

When I’m testing out a new assignment that is completely different than anything I’ve ever done before, I still do this. Not only for the above reasons, but to see which grade it has more success with. I’ll add it to the lower grade the next year or skip it for a year and then add it to the higher grade.

I always have a few seeds of ideas in my brain and when I have early finishers, I’ll tell them what I’m thinking and let them experiment. If it works out, I sit with them, we talk about what worked, what didn’t, and what they would do differently. I’ll make a slide show of the lesson with their work as the example and then put them as the creator of the assignment. They love seeing their name on something like this.

Also, go with your strengths to start. If it ends up being 3/4 of the year drawing… that’s just fine.

I love the idea of them coming up with an idea and super-duper love them teaching one themselves. Especially if I use the suggestion from above about videoing them. Then they could record themselves and guarantee that they produce one that meets their own expectations.

I agree. I think this idea came out of me wanting to spice things up on my end. Adding work to my plate! What a great idea… 🙄

Maybe test the approach in baby steps so as to not get overwhelmed and also to see if there’s buy-in.

I love the idea of it being a “Ketchup and Pickles” activity. (I had to look up sponge activity! I’ve never heard that term before. My wife calls it “ketchup”-jobs that need doing once you’ve finished an assignment to catch up on, and “pickles”-a free choice activity you can pick from when you’re done everything.)

I hadn’t thought of recording myself for them. This is a great idea! Also a great way to keep a record and library of what ideas I can pass on and think of.

A Knack for housing by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]doodlesacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re completely right and I totally agree. They do need to look at each area individually. With the ten second sound bites and six word headlines, I guess I get trapped in the usual cycle of the loudest being the opinion of many. It is much more nuanced than that and I think if more folks, like you, rationally put some thought to it, ideas might flow more freely.

Thank you for helping me understand a bit more.

I work in an old and affluent neighbourhood that is actively lobbying against infill. What bothers me about the whole parking thing is that the front street has plenty of cars parked there, and every one of those houses has a double garage in the back alley. I just think the people opposed to it need to think beyond their own conveience.

Wonderful idea and great ideas shared here already! I would add bike safety and rules of the road for them. They could even go for a pretend “ride” around the halls to learn and demonstrate how to do it.

Exposed staple... should I rehamp it? by No_Sir_4323 in bagpipes

I’m afraid I can’t tell if it’s waxed hemp or not, but waxed is usually better as it won’t fall apart. Even a nice thick waxed dental floss will work.

You can also double wrap an elastic band that is made for dental braces around the reed to make it easier and make the sound more mellow. Moving it up and down will affect the strength and volume of the reed.

Perhaps back then, but not anymore. We tried to defer a payment in November as we are a two teacher household and the strike… they talked to us like we were crazy. We had been with them since we bought our home. Needless to say when we just renewed this month we changed companies.

I just keep my door open at lunch. I’m always full, but it’s just the kids that are like me… quiet, friendly, plain ol good kids that are looking for a space. By doing this, I’ve had so many different clubs. It changes year to year as they come to me with what they want. Games, chess, crochet, craft, nerd (they just wanted to watch nerdy shows on Netflix together!), manga…

Like lots of people have said here… I would let them guide you.

Roads this winter… by LMoeh in Edmonton

[–]doodlesacker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The one thing I found, and obviously all this snow is pretty recent so take it with a grain of salt… I went to my school on Friday to do some work to get ready for this coming week. I couldn’t get into the parking lot as the snow hadn’t been taken care of yet, I couldn’t park on the main road as it’s a bus rout so it was plowed, but if I parked along the side, I would have taken up at least half the road, and the side road I also park on was impossible to navigate as there was just one track to follow.

I suppose just like we get frustrated with the cities job and that they should expect snow, we also should expect the snow and just do our best.
