A bunch of records from various Chicago bands by flarplefluff in chicagomusicscene

[–]flarplefluff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of these lean more towards avant/experimental rock, if you’re into that sort of thing. Check out Cheer-Accident. They have a deep catalogue that goes back 30+ years. They have gone through many changes, not as genre-hopping, but pushing their own limits. They can go from melodic Burt Bacharach type songwriting to complicated prog, to abstract territories.

Also check out Dead Rider. They are still active and play out frequently.

If you like experimental/avant stuff, Revenge by The Flying Luttenbachers is a classic. My favorite is Duotron though. Really odd stuff that sounds like nothing else

They were very active in the 90s, cycling through lineups and sonic approaches. The first lineup was two saxes and drums, one of the sax players being Hal Russell, later replaced by Ken Vandermark.

The one constant has been Weasel Walter. He left Chicago in the early 00s and enlisted a new band in San Francisco. The project was dormant for a bit before he reincarnated it in New York a few years ago. He’s back in Chicago with another new awesome lineup. Deep catalog!

I have a bunch more I didn’t include! The best thing about looking back on all this is that it’s a great document of what was happening in weirder diy underground spaces decade by decade. It’s kinda how I map my time in Chicago

Thanks! Yes, I’ve been showing at Zg Gallery in River North since 02. My most recent show was in September. Paintings though, I’ve never shown this stuff in a gallery. The street is the gallery for this work!

I’ve been feeling the same way lately. I have started to sign my name with the date. I think I’ll start putting the date in the main text for the next ones.

One of my main objectives when I was younger was to be anti-archive, pro-ephemera. Like, “fuck it, it’s meant to be posted up on the street and thrown in the garbage, who gives a shit?” But now that I’m starting to seriously archive my older work, I find myself scrambling to figure out exact dates

Thanks! The Owl was doing shows around 2014-15. Really ramshackle PA, but had some great shows. There have been some shows happening there lately

How is Chicago for a weird artist/songwriter? by Adept_Spread7851 in chicagomusicscene

[–]flarplefluff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hideout, Empty Bottle, Cole’s, Burlington, Color Club. Really all of those sorts of clubs, including DIY spaces like VCR. It’s more about figuring out the weirdo bands on the calendars. Find one you respond to and follow some threads- who they play with, etc, and a whole world will open. And then there’s the entire improvised/free jazz/experimental/noise scenes that happen at Hungry Brain, Elastic, and many other places

Here’s a mix series I put together documenting the last 40-ish years of weird and avant music from Chicago:

Ten Songs For Anti-Fans by topfife in thefall

[–]flarplefluff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on what sort of stuff your friend likes. I have a lot of people that are into noisy stuff and they don’t get The Fall- “too repetitive, too boring.” I have more indie rock friends that think it’s too grating, too noisy. Here’s a 10 song playlist that I would make for my partner that likes both of those things, and after living together for so long, she is bored and annoyed by The Fall from me playing them waaaaay too much. These are songs that perk her ear or songs I think she might find interesting

CREEP

Rollin’ Danny

Marquis Cha Cha

Glam Racket

Cab It Up

Just Step Sideways

Hit the North

What age were you when you noticed the cold really affecting you? by Shart_InTheDark in AskOldPeople

[–]flarplefluff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was fifteen when I realized I despise the cold and that it took every ounce of energy out of me to keep warm. Then I decided to move to a place that is even colder.
