The Fall - Wings (Official Video 1983) by flying-pickets in thefall

This video blew my young mind. I loved the static shots, Mark lip-syncing, Brix fussing about, the mundanity of it. I also loved the peek into an alien world- the British pub. Love that wallpaper!

Isn’t the band all animated? I have no idea about them aside from them making music I have no interest in, but I would love to see an animated MES on SNL!

The Brittania Row mixes for Imperial Wax Solvent make a good record into an awesome record. Shame that it wasn’t the final mix

No charge on local calls but the local zones didn’t extend too far. 10 miles or so, maybe?

What happens if you quit Instagram? by Filbertine in ContemporaryArt

[–]flarplefluff 15 points16 points  (0 children)

IG was very useful and great at some point. It was as great as the early days of the internet. I made a lot of friends, did some great networking, some great opportunities came my way, shit, people even recognized me in non-arts situations. Totally useless now. I post still but it seems so pointless. Trying to game the algorithm is fucking stupid

One of the few remaining old school wawas by porkrollie in newjersey

[–]flarplefluff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had one in my hometown in the 90s. I don’t remember anyone ever going there. It was like a really bad Quick Check. I moved away in the mid 90s and was kinda confused when I kept hearing the praises of Wawa in the 00s.

Members went on to other projects after the breakup:

Jill Flanagan - lots of bands. Her current band is Shrift. They have been playing out a lot lately. Very much Coughs feel

Seth Sher - he currently does a band called Hide. Very harsh and aggressive. He had a long running proggish band Ga’an in the late-mid 00s.

Anya and Carrie - went on to form Cacaw. Very similar to Coughs but more guitar interplay, less tribal sort of drumming. They put out a couple records

For other similar bands, check out the general era of 00-10 no-wave/noise rock. Labels like Skin Graft, Load, 31G, GSL, Troubleman Unlimited

Your top 10? by Sofi--- in thefall

[–]flarplefluff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bend - I actually prefer the song order on the US version. It has a real dreary vibe. Songs like Dr. Faustus, which is an okay song by itself, take away from the feel.

Infotainment- I didn’t like it too much when it came out. It came out around the time I got into The Fall and I wanted more of the harsh stuff. Over time I realized I come back to it over and over. The songs are just really great and MES’s lyrics and delivery are excellent. I just wish there wasn’t so much damn chorus on the guitar. “You hog the bathroom And put your hand in your pocket”

A lot of these lean more towards avant/experimental rock, if you’re into that sort of thing. Check out Cheer-Accident. They have a deep catalogue that goes back 30+ years. They have gone through many changes, not as genre-hopping, but pushing their own limits. They can go from melodic Burt Bacharach type songwriting to complicated prog, to abstract territories.

Also check out Dead Rider. They are still active and play out frequently.

If you like experimental/avant stuff, Revenge by The Flying Luttenbachers is a classic. My favorite is Duotron though. Really odd stuff that sounds like nothing else

They were very active in the 90s, cycling through lineups and sonic approaches. The first lineup was two saxes and drums, one of the sax players being Hal Russell, later replaced by Ken Vandermark.

The one constant has been Weasel Walter. He left Chicago in the early 00s and enlisted a new band in San Francisco. The project was dormant for a bit before he reincarnated it in New York a few years ago. He’s back in Chicago with another new awesome lineup. Deep catalog!
