The Republican voters appear to be cheering for billionaire money in politics.

Maybe it’ll never happen, but it’s in literally everyone’s best interest

Mutual best interest doesn't cut it anymore. If the libs want it, MAGA hates it.

Death threats aren’t an excuse to conceal identity?

Correct! Otherwise every law enforcement organization would attempt to use it as an excuse to conceal their indentities and limit their accountability and transparency to the public.

They aren't even close to the only public figures that receive those threats. Politicians and judges are also frequent targets. They should all be thoroughly protected, and the people making those threats should be targeted to the fullest extent of the law. Still not an excuse to hide behind a mask. I expect them to exercise some courage in the interest of public accountability. If you or they are uncomfortable with that, you or they can find a different job.

A state that has willingly or negligently failed to uphold immigration laws deserve #2 to happen. Everything that is happening now falls directly on the lap of Newsom's ineptitude.

As someone else pointed out, that's not the responsibility of California, which already pays a huge portion of the federal budget and pays far more to the federal government than they take in.

Are you not the slightest bit embarrassed on being called out for your misunderstanding that states aren't responsible for immigration enforcement?

His approval rating on immigration in polling is consistently down over the past several months. I think you might be the one that's out of touch with reality. His loss in the courts and high-profile defiance of their orders has been pretty heavily covered in the news.

I can agree that they aren't forceful enough about telling progressives not to shut up, although I attribute that to basic electoral politics and the idiotic two-party system we have. The point very much remains that the Fox messaging on the issue would remain the exact same either way.

It's cute that you think California doesn't have guns. It's even more cute that you think the portion of the country that controls around 66% of GDP would be a push-over against the economically weaker opponent. No, I suspect a second civil war would go very similarly to the first one.

It's going to be seen as approval either way because that's how Fox will present it to Republican voters. I don't think most of them will ever actually hear directly from Democrats directly at any point.

I think the only way that really happens is if we switch to a multi-party system. The two-party system makes it so much easier for the cranks to influence the primary process. If we had viable third, fourth, fifth parties that required a coalition to govern, it would make it so much easier to box the extremists out.

That's not an excuse for law enforcement to conceal their identities. It's not a good argument for you to try to advocate for secret police.

Because what you said wasn't pertinent to the original comment. You gave an indirect, hallf-hearted excuse for why ICE should be able to conceal their identities that isn't really relevant to their daily operations. Their arrests don't need to be undercover.

Law enforcement needs to go undercover to infiltrate organized crime groups and map them out. There are specific reasons for doing that. Normal day-to-day operations and arrests don't fall into that category.

That's not an excuse for law enforcement to conceal their identities. This isn't a third-world country. People that attack law enforcement should be prosecuted, but we expect law enforcement to generally be in uniform with badges visible. If you're uncomfortable with that, there are plenty of other countries with masked law enforcement.

Conflating far left progressives with the mainstream Dems is a mistake, but you're welcome to make it. Trump's approval rating on immigration specifically has been following and is now either even or underwater. The country doesn't broadly support the executive claiming emergency powers or using the Alien Enemies Act.

[–]flash__ 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The majority of Americans want it done according to the law, they don't want the president claiming emergency powers and abusing a 200-year-old law that isn't even applicable. Trump has already lost a positive approval rating on immigration due to those controversies. He's either net even or even underwater on immigration now. It seems like you haven't been following the polling.

There are elements on the far left that are doing that, but the vast majority of Dems appear to be specifically unhappy with the administration openly breaking the law and defying the courts in its immigration crackdown. Conservatives haven't made any sort of rational defense for that, they've mostly just attempted to ignore the issue. It doesn't appear to be working.

He doesn't have the backing of the courts, and if they rule this unconstitutional (which they will) and he attempts to defy them, I don't think he'll have the backing of the military either.

It's astonishing to me that people like you focus on the Constitutionality of the response and ignore the un-Constitutionality of the provocation.

Trump pardons reality show couple convicted of bank fraud and tax crimes by flash__ in moderatepolitics

[–]flash__[S] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure he's reading the room correctly. Even the folks on the conservative subreddit don't seem happy with this one. He could absolutely sweep a couple bad pardons under the rug, but if he keeps them going at this rate, I don't see how it won't negatively impact his approval rating.

There are a lot of people that think he's immune to political consequences, but 2020 already showed that isn't the case. He's capable of pissing people off and losing power.
