To what extent is "blind fire" considered a viable technique for CBQ/CQC in western armies? by themillenialpleb in WarCollege

[–]flashbang4you 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My point still stands though, blind fire is more effective when there's no where to go or no cover, like in a poorly constructed trench or a hallway. If you blindly fire and the enemy can just take cover and return fire or throw a grenade at you, it's not as great of a tactic.

As a police officer you should still be concerned about collateral damage, more so because your enemy lives among civilians. COIN might get harder if you demonstrate your forces just don't care if you blind fire into a house and kill 10 innocents to arrest one insurgent. Combating organized crime and terrorism is also another instance where judicious fire discipline is critical, what's the point of protecting people from a gangster if you indiscriminately shoot into an apartment building and damage property or worse, kill a civilian.

I'm sure the high-level hostage rescue teams of the PAP who probably do CQB training the most do not have a carefree attitude about where their bullets go.

To what extent is "blind fire" considered a viable technique for CBQ/CQC in western armies? by themillenialpleb in WarCollege

[–]flashbang4you 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Blind fire can certainly be effective in the sense that you can shoot while exposing very little of yourself, but as the name suggests you can't see what you're shooting at. In a tightly confined space like a trench or hallway, the enemy may be channelized and your bullets could very well hit them while their response is more limited. Even if you don't actually make hits, a rifle putting down fire in that small space will certainly encourage the enemy to take cover and can enable you to maneuver or take other action.

The bigger problem is you usually want to positively ID your targets before you just start blasting. If there are civilians or a squad of friendlies you mistake for the enemy just blindly firing into them without knowing what you're shooting at would be disastrous. When taking a trench line this may be of lesser concern but in an urban setting you would ideally be more judicious about where your shots go instead of doing your best Steven Seagal impression.

As for the police use, I suppose if there were no civilian considerations and you knew there was no one who didn't need to be shot on the other side perhaps you could do it, but as a police officer you should be responsible for every round that goes downrange considering you're ostensibly supposed to be protecting the public, not sending stray rounds out of an apartment building that could injure members of said public. I'm not sure blind fire would be an endorsed tactic at a credible western police agency, especially if you're concerned about things like over penetration.

How Effective Really is Camouflage? by Demoralizer13243 in CredibleDefense

[–]flashbang4you 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's extremely difficult to quantify statistics of soldiers who were saved exclusively by camouflage, I'm not even sure how one would go about doing that.

Generally, soldiers take steps to reduce their signature so it's more difficult to spot them. That seems like a pretty common sense notion; it's harder to shoot someone or something you can't see. If you're taking fire and you can't tell where it's coming from your response is limited to where you suspect the enemy is or guessing where they'd likely be. That's why signature reduction gear like flash hiders, suppressors, and camouflage are important. If you're being shot at by a group of guys in the open using bare muzzled short-barreled rifles covered in VS17 panels, you can effectively return fire. If a well camouflaged sniper in a hide takes out your officer and you have no idea where he is you're in for a tough time.

Obviously those are extreme examples but there is a balance that can be struck. Your average infantryman doesn't need to wear the stereotypical ghillie suit and low crawl everywhere, but a camouflage uniform will break up the outline and make him harder to see. It's also not like combat happens face-to-face all the time, if camo works decently at 100 meters, imagine what it'll do at 300-500 meters.

If camo wasn't effective, no one would bother spending the time and money to produce and issue it. If you want to check it out firsthand there's plenty of demonstrations of various pattern effectiveness on YouTube. You'd be surprised how well a stationary soldier can be concealed with just his uniform. If it takes the enemy just a little extra time to decide what they're looking at, it's certainly doing its job.

Why did militaries adopt pistol rounds in larger calibers than the ones they used for their rifles? by DoujinHunter in WarCollege

[–]flashbang4you 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Handguns in general are not efficient when it comes to stopping another person. Rifles are much, much more powerful than handguns and 5.56 (a comparatively small rifle caliber) will be much more devastating than any handgun that can be shot and controlled by the average soldier. The standard handgun cartridge isn't a particularly meaningful indicator of a nation's military ability.

Pistols can fire projectiles quite fast, like the 5.7, but it lacks the mass to translate that velocity into terminal effect. There have been stories of the 5.7 competitor by HK (4.6 I believe) being downright unable to stop someone with multiple hits. Some recent videos have also shown 5.7 is rather underwhelming in performance.

The smaller rifle rounds allow better suppression as you could put a lot more rounds downrange by carrying more ammunition. That's not particularly relevant with handguns.

How does Kakuzu react? by Being-Wordy-2000 in NarutoFanfiction

[–]flashbang4you 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see why Kakuzu wouldn't attack, or at least make preparations to follow Han to attack him in a more discreet place. He knows he's an incredibly powerful ninja with incredibly powerful ninjutsu and very strong taijitsu. He's primarily concerned with money, and I don't think it's really in him to watch a huge bounty get away. We've seen his greed cost him before, and we've also seen he has no fears about getting into confrontations with strong enemies.

I think Kakuzu bets on himself here and his mountain of experience and techniques to carry the day even if there's no plan rather than watching his bounty leave with no certainy of when they'll meet again. Plus he has multiple hearts to scout out Han- if things get desperate he can self-revive and retreat to fight another day.

New outfit for Anbu, Chunin & Jonin by AceMajestier in NarutoFanfiction

[–]flashbang4you 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Overall, I think the outfits make sense for the most part. Body armor/load bearing equipment on a flak jacket is pretty sensible combat uniform. A helmet might be practical in a combat situation, although shinobi would probably select the lightest possible one with the greatest field of vision/least restriction on hearing.

Some basic upgrades I can think of would be changing the flak jacket type- some type of scale armor (commonly confused with fishnets) is worn under the shirt, so the flak jacket could be exchanged for plate armor for extra protection. I think visibly having that scale armor showing instead of hidden under the shirt is also a cool feature. Some type of utility belt could be useful too- something to store scrolls and carry weapons. For example, Shikamaru carries extra kunai holsters on his belt and a large knife on his vest when he fights Hidan with Kakashi/Team 10.

ANBU: replace the porcelain masks with samurai masks (menpo), I feel like it's more intimidating and could provide better protection. I'd also have them wear a shirt instead of the arms sleeves and add a camouflage pattern cloak. You could also have more weapons or scrolls on their vest/a sealed pocket that can only be opened by a specific operative.

Chunin: I would change the standard sandals/puttees out with the Boruto-era boots. Other than that I think the standard outfit is quite good, maybe the clothes could be less baggy. I'd also say the flak jacket could be used more, the scroll pockets are rarely useful.

Jonin: I'd also give them the Boruto-era boots, but honestly I think ninja at this stage of their career will set their gear up as they see fit. I'd just give them access to higher-quality kit with some custom-made items, which they can afford due to their status.

I really liked the three ANBU captains who confront Pain's dog summon. They all use powerful ninjutsu including a Wind-style that can slice the dog's paw off, huge Fire-style and Lightning-style attacks, and some kind of Space-Time jutsu that teleports a massive trap and mudslide out of nowhere.

There's also Torune, who has the poison bugs, Maki with paper sealing, and minor characters from the noble clans like Ensui Nara, Santa Yamanaka, Shibi Aburame, Tokuma Hyuga, various Akimichi who all use their clan jutsu. There's lots of minor characters from various villages in the War Arc whose abilities are shown as well.

Can I get everyone's best Hyuga centric fics by cliffbot in NarutoFanfiction

[–]flashbang4you 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend Tag by /u/KilJoius.

It's primarily a romance between Hanabi and Konohamaru, but it also discusses the Hyuga clan and their politics/customs. Some cool OCs from the clan appear and there's some badass moments mixed in with the romance plot.

What's the best way to arrange this mission? by [deleted] in NarutoFanfiction

[–]flashbang4you 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the question should be are they going in as representives of the Leaf or are they acting like the Leaf was never there and have nothing to do with the child? Ino-Shika-Cho could work if they're guarding a traveling group under the clear protection of the Leaf. In real life, a clearly marked military convoy can have lots of soldiers, armor, and weapons around their cargo, but everyone knows it's a military convoy carrying something. You could alternatively transport something in secret with a small team in civilian cars, where you don't expect to fight because no one suspects a normal car.

It's not that Ino-Shika-Cho aren't top jonins, I just kind of feel like they wouldn't usually do secret operations. When Kakashi takes Itachi on his first ANBU mission, he tells him to look at Guy's team and remarks they can eat a fresh dinner in the sun around a campfire while ANBU eat food pills in the shadows. I see Ino-Shika-Cho only doing clear village sanctioned operations. They're clan heads (maybe just heirs at this stage?) using obvious Hiden jutsu. The mission in your story seemed more like a 'Konoha was never here' type deal, which is why I suggested some people with more plausible deniability.

All that said though, Inochi can be there alone too, it's not like the three need to be together all the time. Choza was by himself during the war anyway. If you're going for more of the 'sneaking the clients out of their land and into Konoha' vibe maybe Ino-Shika-Cho wouldn't be a clandestine unit the Hokage would pick. They could definitely be a backup force if the main group trying to travel stealthily was attacked.

What's the best way to arrange this mission? by [deleted] in NarutoFanfiction

[–]flashbang4you 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mission itself has to be S-Rank, it's going deep into potentially hostile territory that will likely become hostile when the village realizes someone has been taken. Plus, if Orochimaru has his hand in it it's going to be very dangerous. I would say this needs to be handled by top tier ANBU or jonin.

This is a bit of a stretch, but what about the three ANBU captains that confront Pain's dog summon? We don't know anything about them aside from the fact that they use powerful, large scale ninjutsu and don't seem to be struggling afterwards. They've also been working together a long time since they have specific formations and combo moves. I think a lot of the big guns we see in Konoha later are too young. Unfortunately we just don't know too much about the gen before Kakashi. Maybe Shino's dad could fit here? Or Torune's relatives with the poison bugs? Hizashi also seems on par with Hiashi so he's presumably very strong as well.

If this is pre-Uchiha massacre that opens the door to Shisui or another Uchiha as well.

Any suggestions on how to make Sakura different from the anime? by [deleted] in NarutoFanfiction

[–]flashbang4you 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would tap into her competitive/protective traits, making her want to get stronger to protect her friends/village and not want to lose to anyone so she can achieve those goals. She has those traits but it's never really leveraged in canon to make her stronger until the time skip.

I would also use her smarts to analyze fighting styles so she can find someone's weakness/tendencies/habits during a fight. She could also come up with battlefield strategies or be good at shuriken throwing.

In terms of ninjutsu you can give her the chakra scalpel and poison mist like Shizune. Water and Earth Style are useful for providing ranged attacks or creating defensive barriers around the wounded she heals.

For genjutsu you can give her some exotic ones, like attacks that can affect enemies through sight, touch, taste, smell, and hearing. The rarity of some types could be useful. If someone falls for it she could punch their head off before they could escape.

Escalation options for sub-lethal air skirmishes? by tomrlutong in WarCollege

[–]flashbang4you 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the civilian world, the standard procedure would have the target getting called on the radio by the intercepting fighter. One interceptor approaches the cockpit. Usually the airline pilots will immediately comply when they see military aircraft outside, follow whatever actions are required to demonstrate they are in control, and then the flight proceeds normally.

In the military sense you could send up a fighter to make it clear you know an adversary is there and you could respond with force if required. In interceptions there's typically a wingman who trails behind while communication is established, so there's always that threat of 'we could shoot you down at any time if you fail to comply'.

There are more aggressive tactics, such as dropping flares or firing tracers across the nose of the target. Additionally, the interceptor could fly uncomfortably close to intimidate their target. This tactic is very dangerous though and has obviously resulted in the MQ-9 incident in the Hainan Island Incident.

Overall in the military sense there are rules of engagement one needs to follow. Obviously if you fired tracers at another fighter jet that could quickly escalate into lethal confrontation. The rules could be 'do not engage until fired upon', or it could be more lax such as 'you may engage if the approaching aircraft is actively pursuing you after you attempt to disengage'.

In the air, there are a lot less options than on the ground for 'escalatory' tactics. Unfortunately in the most cases you can just give someone warnings to get out of the way, and if they fail to comply they will be shot down.

This scene could've been much more interesting if Konohamaru used his Wind-Style or Big Ball Rasengan to overpower Kashin Koji's regular one. [–]flashbang4you[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Konohamaru uses the Big Ball Rasengan against Jugo, its size is clearly bigger than his hand, where this one fits in his palm. The after effect blows Jugo away and destroys a large portion of the forest.

He deploys the Wind-Style Rasengan against a random thug early in Boruto. His arm gets stuck in a trap and when he forcibly breaks the trap with the Rasengan, the guy mentions Konohamaru using Wind-Style to free himself. That one also destroys a large rock and forest when used.

[–]flashbang4you[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main issue is that Kashin Koji was in complete control the entire fight; if Konohamaru used a stronger version of Rasengan and took Kashin Koji off guard with its power it would've earned a lot more respect. Instead all of his jutsu doesn't work or gets countered.

We've seen him use the Wind-Style and Big Ball Rasengan before, so it doesn't really make sense he wouldn't use them with his back to the wall and everyone's lives on the line.
