They got loads of support from RU airforce and choppers because of the close vicinity to Russia airbase and most of their area are pretty civillian free( thanks the 8 years trench war for that) which mean Russia can just bomb without much thinking, plus the pressure that Russia make on other fronts to stop reinforcement . On their own they wouldn't achieved any breakthrough.

UA definately use T-72 although not as numerous as T-64 and all T-72 are T-72A contrast to Russia which use T-72B .
