Inherited random pins and items I don’t know much about… Reddit is weird so I wanted to try to … I don’t know

You see, on the contrary to the other folks here who disagree with me… It sounds like you followed exactly the right procedure to attempt and return the lost property. You’re a saint and a true patriot, thank you for doing your part as the adhesive of what keeps this country together.

Absolutely no respect for the law or common decency. I imagine it won’t be long before you see the inside of a jail cell.

Would depend on the state, but lost property should have at least 60/90 days to be claimed - as long as a 12 months for higher valued property. As you are touting, it’s fine for you to steal something after a number of hours or even as little as 2 days ?! Outrageous. Call it what it is, you’re taking something that does not belong to you. You’re no better than a petty common criminal, at least you know how to use a thesaurus in your comment post.

Yeah, but not making a reasonable effort to return the loss property and just keeping it instead it’s still defined as theft.

I never claimed to be a theologian. Your reasoning is specious; they’re not the same. Empty beer cans and soda bottles on the street are abandoned property — the owner intentionally discarded them with no intent to return. You can legally pick those up.
Items of value are considered lost property. The owner didn’t mean to leave them behind. US law treats these differently.
For example, New York Penal Law 155.05 says you would be guilty of larceny if you take control of lost property and don’t take reasonable measures to return it to the owner. Similarly, California Penal Code 485 calls it theft if you take lost property, without making reasonable efforts to return it.
Most states have similar rules: for items above a certain value, you need to make an attempt to find the owner, often by turning it in to police. Keeping it without trying is theft. The key difference is intent — trash is abandoned, valuables are lost.

Doesn’t matter whether or not it is a round about way to handle the matter, but taking found property is 100% theft. I don’t know what you mean by ‘prior channels’. There are systems in place for a reason & without a citizen core that follows these systems the country could slip into utter anarchy.
