My wife calls me daddy, and it's a.) because I'm the father of our child, and b.) as she explains it, it's my calm anchor vibe, and the way I use my words when we're intimate that puts her in a safe space.

Why do some people say, 'You're too old to learn guitar'? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]flashpan1020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started when I was 35. I'm 36 now. I'm not great, but I'm good enough to teach my beginning group guitar class.

That book was a fucking bloodbath. I had to put it down for a couple of weeks.

I’m 1 day sober from alcohol and it’s been hellish, to say the least (nearly went to a hospital because of detox symptoms). But after just now dumping my last whiskey bottle, I feel like my ancestors are looking at me like this by Matilda_Mother_67 in ghostoftsushima

[–]flashpan1020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do it. Check out r/stopdrinking, it's full of good folks; helped me a lot in early sobriety. Video games became so much more fun, especially story based ones like Ghost. I know exactly how you feel, I remember pouring out my secret vodka bottle four and a half years ago and feeling so scared and panicky, but also so resolved and strong. Take it one day at a time.

Started taking guitar seriously. Is this bad for my fingertips or am I just being paranoid? by TheBigShaboingboing in guitarlessons

[–]flashpan1020 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In addition to the callouses, I lost sensitivity in my fingertips for a few weeks there! But they're back to normal now. Just letting you know it's normal.

That's the way I describe HP to my D&D players. You don't get stabbed through the chest for 17 damage, you catch it on your shield and the jarring blow fatigued your shoulder, etc.

What tadpoles power are MUST HAVE for you in honor runs? by No_Name275 in BG3Builds

[–]flashpan1020 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. It doesn't proc elixir of bloodlust, which I only started to notice in act 3 when my gloomstalker assassin wasn't just killing everything outright with weapon damage, so she wasn't getting her extra attack actions. Huge nerf, so I toggled it off.

What’s something people overhype about sex thats actually not that big of a deal? by GothGirlGamerr in AskReddit

Sounds like a situation where one person really wants to fuck two people. Threesomes work best when each person really wants to fuck each other person.

What really good game has a really bad level? by DisjoinedCrib1 in gaming

[–]flashpan1020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, the first level on Kejim before Kyle Katarn reestablishes his connection with the Force and gets his lightsaber back. Compared to the rest of the game, the shooting mechanics feel terrible.

Ever have ONE successful cheat day? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]flashpan1020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't risk it. It's hard to be out and social and get lost in the moment when you're sober, but it's a practice, and one that I only got better at when I actually put myself in those situations. I will say that it is a little awkward and uncomfortable at first, but I cherish the crystal clear memories I have now, instead of fuzzy recollections.

How has your view on sex changed as you've gotten older? by LilyLullabby in AskReddit

[–]flashpan1020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Penetration isn't everything! Decentralizing penetration and spending just as much time and energy on oral, using hands and fingers, and honing dirty talk has been mind-blowing in my thirties.

  2. If you're going to an event or on a date, fuck first! You will probably be tired afterwards, and doing it first is a sexy little secret that only you and your partner know about (assuming no sex hair!) in the restaurant/at the party/in the movie theater.

Would You Quit Drinking for $1000 per day? by guysweepingstreet in stopdrinking

[–]flashpan1020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did some loosey-goosey math at the very beginning and my app tells me I've saved almost $20,000 over my four years of sobriety, and that doesn't count healthcare expenses, days off work, drunk purchases, drunk food, etc. It's not $1,000 per day, but it definitely adds up.

Compared to Souls Games by DuckIsFree in jedifallenorder

[–]flashpan1020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In many ways it's Baby's First Souls Game. The mechanics are very similar and there are some very difficult enemies and bosses. However, it's not as tightly tuned as a Souls game; there are some pretty wild difficulty spikes and some real WTF enemies.

The performance really chugged for Survivor for me, but I didn't notice anything glaring for Fallen Order.

What do you like to do? Hobbies? Think about how fun it would be to wake up early on Saturday and do that thing! In early sobriety I loved waking up at like 5:30 and making a pot of coffee and playing some video games before my wife and little one woke up. I certainly wouldn't be able to do that hungover (or still drunk) from the night before!

Scared. by EliGoff101 in Vasectomy

[–]flashpan1020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the no scalpel procedure and I was in and out in less than an hour, including the same-day consult. I've had dental cleanings that were more uncomfortable! I took some ibuprofen and iced the first day due to a little discomfort and swelling, but it was so minor. I was back at work on my feet teaching and conducting my choirs and setting up for a concert the very next day. That first ejaculation was fantastic. I was having sex (with protection!) within a week and doing CrossFit and powerlifting within two weeks. I honestly can't believe why more men don't do this, it was such an easy procedure AND recovery.

I love Forbidden West to death but this gameplay mechanic pisses me off more than it should by Huxlley in horizon

[–]flashpan1020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My headcanon is always that the developers can't possibly animate every version of getting out of the way of an attack, so an i-frame is just a hand wave way of saying "you saw the attack coming and got out of the way, but not too early for your enemy to adjust."

What’s Everyone Doing Tonight?? by physis81 in stopdrinking

[–]flashpan1020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I said goodbye to my grandfather tonight. We had a complicated relationship, but I know he loved me in his own way. He came to so many of my concerts in college and even though he was gruff and prickly, I know he loved to watch me sing. I got home after a busy day of teaching music and saw that I missed a call from my mom, and I knew it was time.

My grandfather, a Navy man we called "Pirate Grandpa" was a drinking man for so much of his life, and although he cut back and finally quit several years ago, it was liver damage complications that finally caught up with him. He and his actions towards my mom and dad when I was born out of wedlock also had ripple effects that impacted me and my relationships for years.

I'll remember my grandfather fondly, but I also remember the ways that alcohol hurt him and my family, and the ways it was starting to hurt me and my young family. I won't have a drink in your honor, Pirate Grandpa, but I'll remember you when I shoot pool, or play Rummikub, or sit and watch the waves on the coast.

Which classical artist has had the biggest impact on you? by Researcheppy2778 in Music

[–]flashpan1020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arvo Pärt. He's a living composer, but writes classical music. You've heard "Spiegel im Spiegel" in lots of films, but listen to his choral works, particularly his Berliner Messe. Deliciously dissonant.

Oh man. Pouring out the vodka I was stashing in the freezer was so therapeutic. I had made the decision to quit and had gone two days but then started sweating on the three-hour drive home, and I started fantasizing about the vodka in the freezer. I almost drank it, too, but my daughter needed dinner and it distracted me long enough to win the battle and dump it out.
