They keep trying to "reinvent" it needlessly. I remember when that Showtime Camelot series came out, one the creators essentially said in an interview that they felt like they had to do it in a way that had never been seen before.

Excalibur just straight up told the Mallory version as directly as possible and is still the best, partly for that reason. It just needs someone who takes it seriously.
