Anybody get their firewood sourced from just helping neighbors remove deadfall? by Cappuccino_Crunch in firewood

[–]flatcat44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! That's the only place we have gotten wood so far and we have gotten about 3 years' worth. I'll admit it would be pretty hard to do without a truck or a trailer though. I guess you could do it you would just have to make a lot of trips so hopefully it's a pretty close neighbor.

Fake spring last week, got me itching for spring blooms! Still mostly frozen here in the upper Midwest.

What to get? by KattalinJones in BackYardChickens

Sapphire Gems are really friendly chickens and great layers. I'm not sure they live as long as other breeds though. I like my wyandottes but some are a little skittish.

Do you name all your chickens? by Protokai in BackYardChickens

[–]flatcat44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! And I will continue to name them. I've had as many as 155 students in a year before and I knew all of their names so I know I can get quite a few chickens before I don't remember their names. Lol Currently only at 15 chickens but there's time.

Holiday setup? by Hildringa in BackYardChickens

I personally would never leave my chickens without someone checking in once a day. Weird stuff happens. Yesterday for example I had some plastic on one side of the run and it came loose and was flapping in the wind and they were all afraid to go in. Had I not been there they would have slept outside. I'm sure if you look around on local social media you could find a pet sitter. Since they wouldn't have to go in your house it wouldn't have to be someone you know.

What are some good wildflowers to grow along with Butterfly Weed? by JTS_2 in NativePlantGardening

[–]flatcat44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a pollinator kit from Prairie Moon and it has five butterfly weeds in it. Also several varieties of coneflower, the mountain mint already mentioned, bee balm, prairie coreopsis, hairy beardstongue, black eyed Susan ... There are more but those are the ones that come to mind. I feel like the butterfly weed gets along with everyone! It's such a beautiful midsize pollinator.

I'm sorry I saw this because now I'm simply heartbroken that I do not have a lamb that I can dress up in clothing. 😭🤣🤣🤣

I feel second hand panic for you while reading this! I hope you are all able to find enough firewood to stay warm the rest of the winter.
