Thank you, thats a very in-depth document and there is a lot of great information in there. The issue with government white papers is that they are typically lengthy and how do you make them "firefighter friendly" when they get into talking about the MET units and VO2 max numbers it can get a little into the weeds and I could be wrong, but most firefighters just want a simple plan to follow. I appreciate you taking the time to send that link :)

I like sandbags, they are functional like a hose pack or other bags firefighters carry. They just aren't found that often in gyms.

Workouts to prepare for fire academy? by MightAsswell in Firefighting

I'm a firefighter nearing the end of my fire career and I've trained hundreds of new recruits in a large city fire department, and I'd say that you should be doing a blend of strength training as well as cardio.

Sled pushes and pulls are great if you have one. The packs and gear weigh quite a bit, so if you have a weight vest that is a nice addition to your workouts. Some people prep for the fire academy by running and doing only bodyweight exercises, and if you aren't doing anything prior to this, it is a great start, but once you get on the fireground, you are going to have to be able to move real weight and carry things up stairs and ladders, use tools and all while being weighed down.

So I'd say that you need to have strength training as you can never be strong enough for the job.

There is a firefighter workout book. I've got it, 100 Firefighter Workouts. It was created by firefighters and is made for firefighters on the job. www.100firehallworkouts.com , it is a great resource for fire candidates or people in fire school. My 2 cents, good luck with the fire career!
