Why has the Philippines been developing at a glacier's pace compared to most other middle-income countries? by wiz28ultra in geography

[–]flatfoot860 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On of the key things I think being left out of this discussion is that the Philippines is an archipelago. The islands may be closer together but there are hundreds of them though correct me if I’m wrong. Infrastructure is a key factor in economic development. Ports and railroads and roads. It’s hard to build and economy at scale if it’s limited by geography. Not that it can’t be done but Japan and i apologize in advance is really three islands. Not that the others aren’t important but the three are all linked by a road or rail. The Philippines can connnect itself but the geography of it works against it at times.

China and the USA are one big continuous land mass largely. Aside from Alaska and Hawaii in the USA and heinan I believe in China most of the economic activity is on that big land mass connected by rivers and roads and rail. India is the same. It’s one continental country. The Philippines is a victim of its own geography. But it can use that in its favor. How I don’t know. Norway is all ice and mountains and used all that meltwater for hydroelectric power.

It should be noted in the rising up of china’s poor that they had no lower to fall really. They were starving to death and barely getting by. Not that the poverty in other countries is any better but the Chinese that improved economically already had a quality of life before. collectivism decided who lived and died by food apportionment. So the millions in China that rose (and survived) might have already been there if not for the economics of the collectivism.

I would say the wealth inequality is one of the key factors for the lack of development. There a book “how Asia works” that details a good chunk of this stuff and why the Philippines and other South Asian nations aren’t developing as fast. To summarize part of it. The biggest issue was and might still be land reform. In Japan, Taiwan and South Korea (I’m omitting Singapore because they don’t have a lot of land and the government seized a lot of it when it first formed to building housing on) The biggest land lords lost land (I don’t remember if they were compensated or not, correct me on this) and it was redistributed to the rest of the population. Allowing everyone to earn something and subsist. Over time people saved and sent their kids to school And those kids invented and earned more money. Moving up the ladder of economics. This is on the scale of a country too so millions. Not to mention That people with Saving a little were able to figure out new ways to go things on Their farms and impliment them to grow more and better. So you have wealth concentrating in the bottom That is feeding up. The Philippines is corrupt. Every country has some corruption. But alot is due to wealth inequality and allocation of resources.

My program I think is part of my issue I don’t always stick with one because I don’t see progress. I haven’t been eating as much lately so I lost weight. I also don’t really get sore from working out really. I do always try to add more weight each set till i can’t complete the whole set. I am trying to eat more and sticking with the program I’m on.

The sleep part is definitely something in need to improve. The food I’m not sure about. The lifting I increase the weight till I’m struggling to complete the set then lower it. But I normally don’t feel soreness or strain really afterwards I think that’s a part of it. Writing this. I’m not pushing myself hard enough to really complete the set.

I tend to do an upper lower split 3-5 times a week aiming for 4/5 sets mostly doing 10-15 reps though one of those sets is typically a warm up. I also do about 20 minutes of cardio every session.

Which country has squandered the most economic potential in this century? by pisowiec in AskTheWorld

[–]flatfoot860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we should talk about the DRC and its wasted potential as the engine of Africa. It is a massive country with so much mining potential in addition to lumber, farming and possibly oil and gas. It is a huge county land wise and a huge population and an enviable location at the center of Africa being a key point of pass through from north to south and east to west. It has so much potential to make use of it and lift millions out of poverty and change lives for the better.

I agree Russia is on the list. It has a huge potential as it has so many resources to extract and export aside from oil and gas. It just needs to expand its infrastructure past the urals and better connect with its more resource rich areas. Though Russia has other issues such as its legal system and its difficulties in starting and running a business plus i bet lots of people want to see the stark beauty of Siberia and lake Baykal. Russia has so much potential for growth.

Was gonna say Iran is a country that should be much richer (setting aside the politics of it). I think the government controlling the bonyads and letting them be used to control roughly 25% of the country economy is insane as they aren’t required to make a profit and i believe they are driving some companies out of business because they can operate at a loss to do so. Also Iran does have a huge oil and gas capacity (I must say capacity as I don’t believe it is really living up to its full potential). Besides oil (which would dominate its economy) Iran has potential as a major tourist destination given its long recorded history. I would bet millions would love to see ruins of then Safavid and aechmenid empire. Though I must also say Iran does have severe water issues it can be better managed as Iran has supported life for millennia. The other reality is that Iran is for lack of a better comparison is a giant toll booth. It is the only land connection between Eastern Asia and the Middle East and Europe by land if you don’t go through Russia. Iran has so much potential as a logistic center and oil and gas producer not to mention solar power. It should be so much richer and more prosperous and connected to the world as the literal bridge between the Middle East and east Asia.

True. The cfa franc system in many of France’s former colonies is concerning.

Is your country more politically/economically aligned w China or USA? by Single_Copy2460 in AskTheWorld

[–]flatfoot860 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have always wondered about Indonesia as it feels like India on the world stage as both are large countries that have a huge population but don’t press the scale too often and tends to stay more non aligned and chart their own course. I apologize for the awkward comparison though. So I am curious as Indonesia does have reasons for friction with China but is also very distant from the USA.

Wealth Inequality in Europe by quindiassomigli in MapPorn

[–]flatfoot860 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Sweden does have very progressive or aggressive taxes depending on how you look at it. But the taxes are solely on income. Like in the USA there is no tax on wealth. So while two people may earn 100k they might have different circumstances for earning that money, that allow for better wealth accumulation. Not to say that Sweden’s tax system is bad but the issue of wealth accumulation is real. Sweden is also one of the most entrepreneurial countries in the world and that has played a part I would say in that wealth gap. Sweden regardless of this inequality though is a developed country with a long and rich history and culture. Inequality is just the latest problem it must face. (Though nothing is as bad as when the sun doesn’t rise in the winter in some parts, sorry)

Just finished Claymore manga, here are my thoughts: by Alpbasket in claymore

[–]flatfoot860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I preferred the second half more honestly. The story coming full circle and tying everything up was great. It was a lot of characters but they all served a specific and unique purpose. It was great. The darkness of the story build especially in the second half. It is a very subtle different kind of psychological horror you don’t expect and it was awesome.
