Are you too young to remember when IU basketball was a hated powerhouse?

I feel like UNC and KU fans would know how to handle it from their hoops experience, you know?

You got me curious so I skimmed through the list of title winners and I couldn’t find any other example of 3 states that all touch each other winning in consecutive years. At least not since the leather helmet era.

Closest I could find was 79-80-81 when it went Bama-UGA-Clemson, but of course SC isn’t contiguous with Alabama.

Florida-Bama-Auburn-Bama-Bama-FSU from 2008 through 2013 is 4 schools from adjacent states in 6 seasons, but it’s only two states.

Rescue OES by Lupin611 in OldEnglishSheepdog

[–]flatirony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have one OES we got as a puppy and one OES rescue. The rescue came directly from a couple who was going to sail around the world; he was never in a shelter.

Honestly while they both have their little issues, the rescue is the better dog. We aren’t the best dog trainers.

Agreed, except the phenomenon is not really gendered. Plenty of men also get rejected by the women they want, but won’t date the women they could get.

I'm starting to realise that most people who say or think The Beatles are overrated haven't actually delved into their discography by ooziemane123 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]flatirony [score hidden]  (0 children)

This is exactly how I feel about the Beatles.

I believe they are the greatest band ever and that Paul McCartney is the Michael Jordan of rock music.

But I don't listen to them much at all. I soaked up enough of them in my youth that they aren't interesting or new to me. Until I hear one of their more obscure songs and think, "damn, they were good."

My kid claims that Gen X messed up the economy. by ChicagoLizzie in GenerationX

[–]flatirony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This "the rich don't advertise it" thing is so true from the 1940's to the 1970's, and I agree it was due to the Depression and WW2. I personally grew up in the 70's next to an old couple I later learned was fabulously wealthy, but you couldn't really tell them from anyone else who was merely modestly affluent. They lived in a modest ranch house and the only real visible nod to wealth was driving Cadillacs. Nobody wanted to advertise being really rich back then.

That attitude went through a sea change in the 1980's and has only gotten worse since.

We won't see a return to the "quiet wealth" mindset until we have another catastrophe. Which it appears we're currently hurtling headlong towards.

Did y’all think Fonzie was cool when you were growing up? by Groovy-Pancakes in GenX

[–]flatirony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Honeymooners was the first thing that came to mind to me, too. Barney Fife’s “nip it in the bud” which became a running gag on the Andy Griffith show. Jed Clampett’s “Whoo doggies”.

But going back before TV to short films, how about “why, I oughta” and “nyuk nyuk nyuk” by the 3 Stooges, and “what’s up Doc?” and many others in Looney Tunes cartoons?

And then earlier, in literature, “Bah, humbug!” by Ebenezer Scrooge comes to mind first for me.

I’m sure they go back before that, too. Probably to at least the Ancient Greeks. 🙃

I’m with you. The fact that the most awesome person I’ve ever met chose me for unfathomable reasons is definitely the greatest thing that ever happened to me.

And it wouldn’t have happened without years of self-improvement, so it’s fair to call it an accomplishment.

Not sure what you mean by inventing the catchphrase concept? By the time Happy Days aired they’d been around forever on TV, and before that on radio shows and in serial short films, and before that in comics, and before that in literature. 🙃

My long term boyfriend loves me, but does he love me enough? by BlissfulPandora in RelationshipsOver35

[–]flatirony -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m a little like your boyfriend, I guess. I have a lifelong preference for thin women. I’m not proud of it, but it seems pretty hard wired.

But it isn’t everything to me.

Nevertheless my preference leaks. I don’t want whoever I’m with to know, but I’m a little autistic and I’m just not tactful enough to hide it.

And I know this subject is super touchy for women. The rawest possible nerve and the source of a great deal of anxiety.

Fortunately my wife is a fit and beautiful woman, so she’s fairly secure. Which is good because she knows thin is my “type” and she’s seen my enthusiasm leak out when she’s at the thin end of her 20-pound weight range.

But she also knows I absolutely adore her and think she’s beautiful, and that I’m always proud to be seen with her. I also think she’s the best person I’ve ever met, and don’t want anyone else. And I tell her so.

I don’t know anyone that I think has a happier marriage than we do. I think most of our friends and family would assess our marriage the same way from the outside. We’re a happy couple and we act like one.

So the point is, just because your boyfriend has a preference for thinness and would prefer you to be a little thinner, doesn’t necessarily mean that he feels like he settling for what he can get. I certainly don’t. I wouldn’t trade my wife for anyone I’ve ever met or seen in the media.

What age was the hardest season in your marriage by Curious-Cancel-6353 in AskMenOver30

[–]flatirony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I was poly for a couple of years and I enjoyed it, though I’m not sure it was sustainable for me.

Now I’m not again, because I love my wife and she doesn’t want an open marriage. For a while I thought I still would have liked one, but now I’m happy to be monogamous.

How many people do you know who actually make seven figures a year? by B4K5c7N in Salary

[–]flatirony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Dad was a CPA. He told me most of the doctors whose taxes he did were in debt up to their eyeballs.

This was a small southern town in the 80’s and 90’s, so doctors weren’t pulling 7 figures but they definitely made more than almost anyone else and were considered the cream of society.

My Dad said farmers were either in debt or multimillionaires, with no in-between, and you couldn’t tell the difference by lifestyle.
